Abstract Series I
Last year was utterly awful in terms of creativity (as for most people I think), and I took a complete break from illustration, mostly down to mental health (post covid malaise), stress, raising my daughter etc. I’m getting back into it this year and have a bunch of projects I am working on. I am easing myself in with a series of abstracts based on a recent exhibition I attended (Strange Clay at the Haywood) and adjacent architecture I saw there. This is the first. Posca pens and Fineliners in an A6 Seawhite of Brighton sketchbook.
P.S. Apologies for Tumblr’s horrific compression which always ruins art and illustration and reduces vibrant colours to a dull blur.

I hang above your head You hang around my neck You’re strung across my back I’m slung across your lap
Been a long time since the sun was in the sky Been a long time since I looked into your eyes Do you see her in the mirror when you’re alone Do you see her under water and sea foam
We’re not lost Yet We got lost Dead
Oh, why did you get so low? Why did you let go?
When all the vultures bow To taste us fallen down I stare into the white And through the other side
Pray to the One Who can Pray to the Sun Who can Bring back everyone Who can Bring back everyone
White light

Mastodon
I have decided given the current shit show going down at Twitter, it wouldn’t be the worst idea to open an account over at Mastodon. Not as tricky or complicated as people have asserted, though not as simple at Twitter, and perhaps that’s not a bad thing. Click on the link below to find me. At the moment I am just on the UK server. Originally I wanted to be able to join Mastodon.art but they have closed applications at the moment, so when I can I will open an account there too, as I would like to keep both identities separate. I quite like being on the UK server as there are a lot of very interesting people on there, lots of writers, historians and archaeologists.
Here is a useful article on using Mastodon on Medium.
ETA: Finally got approval to be able to Join MastodonArt. Super pleased as the art and design there is awesome. Follow the link below to find me there too:  [email protected]

VW Beatle at Beach Dubbin 2022
Went to Beach Dubbin in Portsmouth with my Dad over the summer, and decided to do an illustration from a photo I took of one of the cars I saw there in my mixed media sketchbook (personal project). This is in a Seawhite of Brighton sketchbook (fairly heavy cartridge paper, ideal for mixed media) using markers, pencil and fineliners.

You dared to Dream (and, y'know, kept asking me when and whether they were ever going to show up). And it's happening! The Sandman profile icons are coming to Netflix! Let joy be unconfined!

The Tower
Started last year as an Inktober prompt. I got bored with it as I don’t enjoy drawing landscapes. Nearly abandoned when my daughter said of the tower ‘it look like it made of Lego’. Very loosely based on Glastonbury Tor.

Geiko
Sadly, a lot of the subtle changes in tone and colour have been lost due to lighting, photography, compression...the usual. You can’t see the gold and turquoise in her Kimono or the gold in the washi tape.  Also, I don’t even want to get into how problematic the interaction of all the different media was.  Despite how tricky it was and how many times I nearly ditched it, I am reasonably happy with the outcome. As in all things, it’s a process of discovery.   Media includes: Gouache for the Geiko and Pismacolor Verithin pencils to add tone to the face, acrylic ink wash background, washi tape and origami used for the fan/parasol, and washi tape edging, posca pens for pattern on Kimono.
So, this an illustration of a Geiko as opposed to Geisha. Geiko are native to Kyoto. Geiko and Geisha have less elaborate hairstyles and ornamentation than Maiko. Geiko and Geisha wear less heavy makeup than Maiko, but paint a full lip as opposed to a Maiko who only paints the bottom lip. There are also differences in how Kimono is worn.  Geiko and Geisha’s Kimono is less elaborate, the Obi is styled differently, and the under robe has a white collar. A doodle I drew during lockdown in August. I re-uploaded this today as I sent it to my daughter this morning, who is just about to start her exams and stressed, but who needs to remember, it’s a small part of a big life, and they are not the ‘be all and end all’.
So, this was originally drawn out whilst listening to the lockdown podcast sessions of Rob Benedict and Dick Speight Jnr, called ‘…and my guest is Richard Speight’. The sections of the illustration that are a bit shit and wobbly are their fault entirely, because I was laughing so hard.
