my father said to me once that one of the things he deeply regretted was not putting music on for his father while he was fading away. he told me that grandpa would just sit in his old armchair in the quiet, and not until after he’d passed did my dad think of how he could have played of his favorite classical music tapes for him so grandpa could listen to something while he still could. i was very young when this happened and not much older when my dad told me this, but it always stuck with me as something important.

my mother died at home in a hospice cot, slowly shutting down over the course of about a week. when she had stopped responding, i remembered what dad told me about wishing he’d played music for grandpa, and i put the radio on her favorite country music station and kept it on for her until she died.

daddy died in hospital. no cassette players, no decent radios. the day after he was brought in, i thought again of what he told me, and i bought a little portable bluetooth speaker. even though he never woke up, was never aware, i played music for him too.

there’s no real significance to sharing this, not really. my motivation is selfish, again: i just want to hope that someone might think of this when their loved one is stuck in silence somehow, and maybe they’ll play music for them, and they won’t have to regret not doing so. i want to hope it helps someone. and i want to hope that someone will remember my dad with me, even in just a “story i read on the internet” way.

Hello I do not know how to say this in a way that would do numbers on tumblr.com but if you are a citizen of an EU country this your reminder to vote in June. Elections for the EU-Parliament take place from the 6th to 9th of June depending on where you live, you can find more details on when and how to vote here.

I know that the EU can seem like this far away thing that you can have many complicated feelings about. But at this point so many key decisons are made at the European level, where the Parliment really can make or break a law. And I am talking about big topics like climate change and global politics but also everyday situations like buying stuff online or getting a refund for your delayed flight.

So even if it might not always be visible, who makes those descions in the EU-Parliment does and will to affect you. Use your vote to determine in which way.

being a doctor who fan in the uk is an unfair disadvantage because everyone here watches it or used to watch it as a child. you can’t wheedle your way out of being cringe-shamed by using the excuse of nobody around you having seen it. everyone’s seen it. everyone associates it with the fucking cassandra pancake and farting politicians. if they’re a little younger, they will say “oh i was so scared of weeping angels when i was! seven” you can’t escape. you can’t lie and say it’s good. everybody knows how embarrassing you are. you immediately get peer-diagnosed with autism even if everything else about you wasn’t giving that away (your music taste, microbangs, 2007 emo eyeshadow, 5 layers of clothing to make you look homeless mori kei, lack of eye contact and oddly posh accent out of nowhere)

basically i need to change my lockscreen to something normal. not another actorman or musician either sure having adrien brody or robert smith or rowland s howard on there is slightly more socially acceptable but it should be something like a floral pattern or a preraphaelite painting maybe. i have 3 months to make myself #cool again before i return to uni. and inevitably join who soc anyway
