2024 Home Viewing #20: Bonnie and Clyde. (dir. Arthur Penn, 1967)
I've long believed I had seen this before, decades ago, but in hindsight it's clear to me that I'd only seen the ending or watched pieces of it distractedly on television.

Low on the totem pole of 2010s Gerwig vehicles. It's not her fault.

2024 Home Viewing #18: Wings of Desire. (dir. Wim Wenders, 1987)
I could not believe the way this ended, and I had no idea Wenders's 1993 film Faraway, So Close! is its sequel. I wondered why on earth Wenders used the enormous golden statue (the Berlin Victory Column) in both films. Faraway is yet another Wenders film for which I owned the soundtrack decades before even caring to see the movie (the other being Until the End of the World). I also couldn't believe the lead actor was Bruno Ganz; all this time I'd erroneously thought it was Liam Neeson. And to make it a trio of things I couldn't believe, I couldn't believe Peter Falk is in this nor the role that he plays. Of course, now I want to see the sequel and the DVD is nowhere to be found in my library system or for sale under $50.

2024 Cinema Viewing #5: Drive-Away Dolls. (dir. Ethan Coen, 2024)
Overscripted within an inch of its life (by Coen and his wife Tricia Cooke). Preposterous acting by Margaret Qualley, with a phony Texas accent spoken so fast you can barely understand half of what she says. So overcompensatingly quirky I was ready for it to be over after ten minutes.

2024 Home Viewing #17: Strangers on a Train "British Version." (dir. Alfred Hitchcock, 1951; released 1996)
Just a few days prior I watched the original release version of Hitchcock's classic. In 1991, an alternate cut was discovered and it received a theatrical release in 1996. It is two minutes longer, and several scenes are slightly different. The comical ending of the "Hollywood" version is omitted. Aside from the ending, you could easily watch the alternate cut and not realize the differences. The nickname "British version" refers to the alternate cut being released first in British cinemas.
I'd hoped to find a revival poster from that 1996 run, but in lieu of that I've chosen an odd fan-made poster of unknown vintage for no reason other than I like the way Kasey Rogers looked in glasses. (Hitchcock insisted on her wearing an incredibly thick pair that she reportedly could barely see through.)
