Mordecai isn't that surprised to see Serafine treat this like it was no big deal. He would have been in the same boat if Serafine, or anyone for that matter, had simply requested him for a discussion. Except, Serafine had made it quite clear this would be a more romantic visit in her application.
Mordecai, meanwhile, only made brief glances into Serafine's eyes, attempting to read her. It was difficult to tell when she was serious or just messing around. "Yes, but you could have requested a normal meeting, not a romantic one. So why didn't you?"
"Curiosity is not always a good thing," Mordecai says, though, despite that, he had to admit he was curious where this would go.
Serafine arrives in style, walking over as if she owns the place with her eyes focused directly on her target. She sits down with grace, batting her eyelashes innocently at Mordecai.
"Mordecai," she says with a huge smile, never shying away from looking at his face. She shrugs at his words. "Mitzi didn't seem to care where de money came from, so long as she was gettin' money. So I thought I might as well, she's been so nice after all."
She rests back in her seat. "Don' be so stern with me, cher. I'm curious, an' I tink you are too, so here we are." Her grin widens at that.

"No worries," Mordecai says, managing a smile. "It's quite rare for me as well, but I've never really connected to the more popular ways of learning really." Mordecai let out a small huff at the concept.
Mordecai hums. "I am glad I am not the only one. I'm not one for snuggles, but I certainly wouldn't mind an animal companion that was relaxed and enjoyed keeping me company while I work." Mordecai smiles, sipping his tea.
"It says here your last topic is decorating. Decorating is certainly something I can appreciate, even if I don't understand the more artistic side of it," Mordecai's snout scrunches a little with the thought, "That being said, it is still extremely exciting and fulfilling to put together a room to be organized and lived in. It's always been my favorite part of moving to any new place."
"Both," Dorothy says, fidgeting in her seat, "Sorry, I've just never seen anyone understand that as well as you have. So I got a bit excited." She lets out a nervous laugh.
Dorothy relaxes and brightens up when Mordecai allows the conversation to be dropped. She dealt enough with her grandmother as it was, she didn't need to discuss her during her off hours.
Dorothy giggles at that before looking apologetic. "Sorry, I didn't mean to laugh at you. I just sort of relate. I prefer lazy dogs over hyper ones. Not lazy enough you can't walk them but, the tap of dog that won't jump all over you and is fine snuggling on the couch with you, you know?"

"I...got it?" Mordecai asks, quirking an eyebrow, "Why I'd make a good teacher or, why learning new skills can be confusing?" Mordecai is not certain what Dorothy's exclamation was for but, regardless, he is glad she seems happy at least.
Or, was happy. Mordecai eyed Dorothy as she quickly changed the subject, not surprised since her grandmother was involved, though it did make him curious.
"Yes," Mordecai says without blinking, "I can barely keep up with them, and how prone they are to sudden movements and licking disturbs me." Mordecai shivers at the thought.
Dorothy holds back a comment about Mordecai's adorable and wiggling ears. "Yeah, you get it!" Dorothy says with an enthusiastic nod.
Dorothy looks down solemnly. "She means well but, she's not always that great at understanding my needs. She always says I'm just paranoid and..." Dorothy shakes her head, forcing on a smile, "Anyways."
Dorothy is more than happy to change the subject. "Oh? Do the hyper, yappy ones scare you?" she asks with a small giggle.

Mordecai's head tilts, ears wiggling. "I hadn't thought about it like that but, you do make a valid point. Many skills are taught in wholes rather than chunks, which can make it more difficult to process. If I had any interest in such a profession, I'd certainly add my own flair to teaching with this understanding."
Mordecai hummed along, frowning. "A bird was my first thought too but, as you've said, they take more management than I'm capable of at the moment. And I'm sorry to hear your grandmother was so opposed to the idea. I imagine if you work there alone, or even just with her, a dog could have offered just a tad bit of much needed reassurance, or company."
Mordecai's eyes widened. "I hadn't even thought about the idea of a dog encouraging exercise. That makes me less opposed to them, though they're still too energetic for my tastes."
Mordecai relaxes when Dorothy doesn't question his out of pocket comment. He'd made it without thinking, and he was hardly in the mood to tell his own sob story about caring for his sisters, and being one of the most reasonable cats here in this dying establishment. Though the latter wasn't something he was afraid to point out, scowling to himself at that.
His expression softens, however, at what Dorothy says next. "I imagine most people are that way. I just so happen to have a mind that works well with the more technical side of things. So long as it is logical, I can reasonably puzzle out how something works. It's quite handy at times, I don't use it half as much as I should."
"There's no reason to apologize. It's hardly an offensive or difficult topic by any means. Seeing as you like them, do you have any pets perhaps?" Mordecai says, embarrassed that he felt achieved for connecting such simple dots.

What Mordecai says makes Dorothy curious. However, not wanting to push the subject or make Mordecai uncomfortable, she doesn't question it. Instead she just plays with her paws.
"I struggle to wrap my head around those sorts of things in comparison, but it really depends on what it is," Dorothy says, ducking her head bashfully.
Dorothy's nerves kick up as her tail and ears stick up. "I-I couldn't think of anything else, so that was more of a placeholder than anything, sorry."

Mordecai relaxes a little when Dorothy doesn't appear upset or offended, his comment appearing to strike a cord with her. "Of course. Believe me, I understand how it feels to always be the one helping rather than being helped."
Mordecai hums in understanding. "I feel the same way about nonfiction. I find it easy to wrap my head around any potential skill or real world fact, so long as I am given enough information on it."
Mordecai picks up the binder, checking over it.
"Yes, it did give me a variety of experiences, which I've always appreciated. But let's see. Unless you have any more questions about me, our next topic is cute animals," Mordecai reads, raising a playful eyebrow at Dorothy.
Dorothy offers Mordecai a smile to let him know it was okay. She was easily startled and that wasn't his fault. Though his offer makes her shoulders relax. "Thank you. You have no idea how nice that is," she says with a breath of relief.
"Ah. It would have been nice to see the world but, St. Louis isn't bad, so I can't complain much. I definitely do! It's one of those things that really clicks with me. No matter the artform, I just find it easy to connect to. And thank you, it really isn't though. For me at least," Dorothy says, picking at her clothes.
Dorothy listens intently, nodding along to everything. "I see. Thank you for sharing, it must have been fun to travel for a while. I bet you saw a lot of things, and people."

Mordecai shoots Dorothy an apologetic look for startling her, it was never his intention to do so, her words had merely surprised him. "I can only imagine. But for now you can have a break, so rest easy."
"I see. I can't relate, I come from New York, and only moved to St. Louis when I was a young adult. And I can tell you have an appreciation for the arts. I'm a fan of music myself, though mostly the classical, instrumental kind. I can't claim to have any interest in singing or dancing though. The fact you put effort into such things sounds impressive," Mordecai said, his curiosity feeling satisfied.
"As for myself, my parents were German, Jewish immigrants. I am still connected to both, though in a cultural sense more than a religious one. As I said, I come from New York, I lived there with my mother and sisters for some time before being discovered by my mentor, Atlas. We traveled during my teen years before returning to his home in St. Louis. As my bio says, I enjoy symmetry, cleanliness, math, and really any factual pursuit."
Dorothy flinches back, nearly knocking over her water in her shock. Yet, after she manages to catch it and uses napkins to clean up the accidental mess, she finally smiles. "R-right. Being a waiter and all, I'm really not used to being on the receiving end, you know?"
Dorothy just hums along, giving him an appreciative look. Maybe it was time to expand her horizons too...literature wise at least, and, if there was a next time, she imagined Mordecai would be the perfect cat to do it.
"Of course! Um, if you want to know some basics about me, as I said I work for my grandmother at her caf茅 as a waitress. We've lived on the outskirts of St. Louis my whole life. Let's see. As you know, I like reading romance novels, but I like the theatre too, and music, especially jazz. Dancing and singing as well, though I'm not good at them. I'm not religious or anything, so, I think that's it. You?"

In a rare break from his usual demeaner, Dorothy's comment manages to make him laugh. "A good client? I'm the one who's supposed to be entertaining you. But, I do find it reassuring you'll do your best to help me in this regard. I am certainly underqualified when it comes to matters of conversation."
"I am quite certain," Mordecai says without a moment's hesitation, "You should never apologize for encouraging others to enrich themselves. Anyone who would complain or regret such a thing simply does not understand." He gives Dorothy a playful pout for a brief moment at that comment.
Mordecai basks in her compliment for a moment. "Thank you. You put it in a far more artistic manner, and I can appreciate that. I appreciate discussing with types that look at books in a less technical light, it offers me a new perspective."
Mordecai gives the binder a small peek when he feels their book conversation is beginning to die down.
"I see the next topic you wanted to discuss is me. This makes sense, this is your first time having me as a host, after all. Or anyone having me as a host, for that matter. Therefore, I am happy to indulge. However, since this is my first time having you as a client, I wonder, would it be alright if I at least received the basics about you as well?" Mordecai says, hoping he hasn't overstepped a boundary.
"I am?" Dorothy says, feeling almost special that way. She looks down bashfully. "I-I'll do my best then! To be a good client, I mean." She had no doubt he'd forget about her the moment her friends requested him though.
"You're sure?" Dorothy asks, just to be certain. She wouldn't want him to be polite for her sake, she'd rather he say how he feels so she'll know what sort of topics she should request next time. Next time? Her ears went up, surprised at herself though she tries not to let it show as she answers his question, "I work at my grandmother's caf茅, we don't have to talk about that though." She swallows, looking down.
Dorothy is at a loss for words for a moment. He'd put a topic Dorothy thought was so simple and even childish and made it sound so eloquent. She nods along to that. "Wow, you put that really beautifully. That's why I've always loved novels. It's like magic, but then you realize it's not because someone had to spend so much time and energy into crafting it."

"Well, that's hardly something to be self conscious about," Mordecai says, shooting Dorothy a subtle smile, "Believe it or not you're my first client. Therefore, I don't see why we can't figure this out together."
Mordecai would be lying if he said he didn't have his own reservations in the current moment. He wasn't very good at calming types like Dorothy, and that made him worry he wasn't being the best host he could be for her. If he'd had it his way, he at least would have read up on the concept of being a good host because being thrown into this. But, he was hired for a job, and he planned to see it through.
Mordecai blinks in alarm at Dorothy's second apology. "There is no need to apologize. I really don't mind. If I'm being honest, I have my own vested interest in literature of all kinds, so I appreciated the opportunity to expand my horizons in ways I usually would not. And when you have the time? Is there something else that preoccupies it usually?" Mordecai tilts his head with his question.
Mordecai nods along, letting Dorothy finish before speaking. "I believe there is a certain skillset required for both that can be equally as impressive. To create a world of one's own, there are several factors that need to be considered in order for it to be believable. But, the same can be said for more historical settings as well. It truly is impressive to pull off," Mordecai says with a confident nod.
Dororthy cringes at herself uncomfortably. It'd only been a couple of minutes and already she was embarrassing herself!
"S-sorry, I'm just not used to this sort of thing. It's my first booking, and my first time in this kind of situation," Dorothy says, fiddling with her paws.
Her friends had made it sound so easy, so normal. They kept saying "it was just a conversation" but even if Dorothy didn't have to worry about the usual things like tripping over her two left feet, conversations could be embarrassing enough.
Dorothy doesn't argue against the change of subject, just glad it takes some of the focus off her fumbling. However, she feels immediate guilt towards Mordecai's reaction.
"I'm so sorry! I didn't mean force you to do something you didn't want to, it's just one of my few interests when I have the time," Dorothy says, ducking her head and having to rub it after she accidentally hits it on the table.
Dorothy speaks after she's calmed down from her mistake, "My favorite tend to have fantasy elements. I find magical worlds more fun than real ones, oh, but I like historical ones too! You make a good point, they're always so beautifully crafted." She hopes she didn't make herself sound too childish.

Mordecai watches this whole display, raising an eyebrow at Dorothy.
"There's no reason to be so nervous. I assure you, unlike Silver, I don't bite. Please be at ease, and help yourself to any of the appetizers and snacks on the table you desire," Mordecai says before picking up the binder on the table.
Tumblr media
"Now, let's see. Our first topic would be," Mordecai says, looking down at Dorothy's file and adjusting his glasses, "Romance novels?"
Mordecai appears puzzled until it dawns on him, hiding slightly behind the binder as he continues.
"As yes, I remember now. This request is the entire reason I read several. Mitzi insisted I'd be a boring conversationalist otherwise."
Tumblr media
Mordecai puts the binder down, clearing his throat.
"Do you happen to have a favorite? I most enjoy the ones that have some sort of historical background, showcasing how life was at those times."
Dorothy can feel her nerves flair up as she's led to the table, mind screaming. Why did you do this, why did you do this? She's always had a crush on Mordecai from afar, but she would have never thought of actually requesting him for something like this. It was her friends idea, they'd gotten the form, pressured her into filling it out, and here she was.
She's even more nervous, screaming intensifying when she remembered she'd requested a private table. In retrospect, it was a good idea cause privacy and not making a fool of herself in front of everyone, but, being alone with Mordecai was nerve wrecking.
Dorothy is practically pushed inside by Mitzi, remaining frozen until the figure inside moves, Dorothy watching him in awe.
It takes Dorothy a moment to process his question, busy admiring his green eyes before she shook his paw. "Y-yes, that's me. And of course."
Dorothy rushes to sit down, nearly falling over before doing so. She manages to sort herself out, giving Mordecai a nervous smile.

Bar Hangout (Closed Starter)
Host: Mordecai | Location: The bar | For: @gatorpriestess
Mordecai is waiting at the bar as promised when Serafine arrives, both their seats at the bar having paper plaques that read "reserved" placed on the wood. Not that they need them, since the bar is all but empty, with most of the scattered crowd surrounding the game tables.
Mordecai says nothing as Serafine approaches and sits down, just staring into his tea. His heart is pounding and he hopes Serafine can't hear it. Out of all the people that could have requested him, it'd of course have to be her when he'd scarcely adjusted to the concept.
"Serafine," Mordecai says, not making eye contact, "I should have known you'd request me. And right after Mitzi set up this little service, if you can even call it that."
Mordecai pouts, eyeing Serafine for her reaction and response.

@lovedorothy Hi, I have some questions about how this all works, if you don't mind! How do you typically decide which orders to fill first? When does our time with a host come to an end? How many orders can we put in?
Ooo these are all good questions and I'll be adding some of this info to the pinned post:
How do you typically decide which orders to fill first?
I'd like to say it's a "first come first serve" type of thing, but it's really not. If a certain character is easier to do, I'll do that character first. If multiple people request the same character, I will most likely do all the orders for that character, then move on to someone else. So I ask people be patient and understanding.
When does our time with a host come to an end?
Your time with a host comes to an end when all your requests have been fulfilled. For normal orders that's the conversation points, for nap orders that's the cuddle requests, and for after dark orders...you can fill in the blank. This is just to stop roleplays for going on forever and encourage people to book again so there can be more relationship progression that way.
How many orders can we put in?
I ask you only put in one of each at a time, and wait for those roleplays to be over before requesting any others.

A Private Dinner (Closed Starter)
Host: Mordecai | Location: Private table | For: @lovedorothy
Tumblr media
When Dorothy arrives, she is led to a private table at the edge of the Lackadaisy speakeasy, which she'd received instructions to prior. It is a normal table just like any of the others, with a white table cloth and chairs with ornate backs surrounding the round structure.
However, this table had a makeshift set of patriations or curtains around it which are lifted to help Dorothy slip inside. That and the location offer some privacy. Thankfully this set up is placed underneath one of the hanging lamps, preventing it from being too dark inside.
Once Dorothy steps inside, she is left alone with the only other cat there. A black and white tuxedo cat, eyes studying Dorothy and standing up straight to greet her.
Tumblr media
"Hello there, Dorothy, was it?" Mordecai asks before offering his paw, "It is a pleasure to meet you. Now, if you'll just sit down, we can begin our time together."
He gestures to the chair across from him in offering.
