“ Hey, uh… change of plans .” 

Shepard’s voice in his earpiece caused him to jump, his spine straight in attention as if she were his drill sergeant. His heart was pounding as if the gravity in the station suddenly went out. 

“Change of plans? What do you mean change of plans? Where are you? Are you safe?” 

How nauseating it was for Garrus to truly care about someone like he cared for Delia Shepard. 

“ No. I mean, yes. I’m fine. Actually, everything’s fine. Normandy is unlocked. I’m heading there now .” 

It normally wasn’t like Shepard to speak in firm, direct sentences like that. She was the type of person to not know when to stop. On and on she would talk, and Garrus would be there to listen. Maybe she was walking through a public area, maybe she was afraid her comms would be hacked or bugged in any way. 

“You’re certain?” Anderson took over the comms, which Garrus wasn’t complaining about, seeing as he could have smacked Shepard upside the head for improvising her way through stealing the Normandy all alone. “What happened with the Control agents? You’re sure no one will notice the board went green?” 

“ I’ll tell you when I see you .” 

“Okay,” Anderson said. “We’ll meet you at the docks, board together.” 

“ No !” Shepard said. “ I mean, it’s all good. I’m right about to board right now. ” 

“You are?” Anderson asked. “What about Mikhailovich? He’ll stop you if he sees you, you don’t have the clearance to be anywhere near that ship right now.” 

“ I, uh, don’t see him. I’m boarding right now. You guys get over here ASAP, before anyone notices anything weird .” 

“Alright, then,” Anderson said, looking at the four of them. Something was off, something was nagging the back of Garrus’s head, and he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. He wanted to nag her, to ask her about every minute detail about how she was able to subdue so many agents by herself and why she was so short with them over comms. He didn’t care if it wasn’t protocol. She never cared for protocol, anyways. “We’ll rendezvous on deck. See you in five.” 

“ Garrus, I lo-- ”

The comms went dead. It was nothing but static on the other end. Static, and the roaring sound of silence in Garrus’s ear. The feeling of loss, a voice sweet as honey.

Ugh. I'm just thinking about the Gale romance and how beautiful it is. This is him at his worst, his lowest and most humiliating point, and then you love him anyway. His greatest shame and humiliation, and you still love him - of course, he won't believe you. The person he loved more than anyone cast him out, and his reputation was destroyed, and his life was effectively over. Then you loved him anyway. You loved him for the parts of himself he considered 'too human' or unworthy, and he slowly realizes that he was wrong about himself.

There's something really satisfying about using a sniper rifle in Mass Effect 2 when you're romancing Garrus. Because at this point I don't think he's particularly interested in Shepard for her weird human flesh, but you gotta imagine that watching his potential lover take down mercenaries from long range does something for that dude.

shakarian brainrot is back and better than ever because their me2 relationship is everything to me. "Hey you're my best friend do you wanna have sex?" "Yes best friend let's bang." So like we think this is just going to be some fwb situation right? I mean SURE there was some flirting but Shepard flirts with a lot of people (not ones she would consider her BEST FRIEND but it's still cool and casual and TOTALLY cool). But then it totally devolves before it even starts. Garrus "I Get Really Nervous Every Time You Walk Into A Room" Vakarian. Commander "Let Me Just Touch Your Arm To Show You How Truly Casual I Really Am" Shepard. I'm foaming at the mouth. It took them collectively 24 hours for them to realize that they actually DO have feeling for another but neither of them understands it or knows how to move forward with it. And then the night, THEE NIGHT, before the Collector Base and Garrus has completely melted into a puddle. Doesn't remember how to act when you're in a woman's bedroom. Fumbling and bringing gifts and weird misguided compliments. And Shepard just EATING IT UP. AND THE CHEEK BRUSH. THE FOREHEAD KISS. ((I know we like to hc that it's how turians kiss but let's just pretend it isn't)) THATS ABOUT THE MOST INTIMATE THING THEY COULD HAVE DONE IN THAT MOMENT TO CALM EACH OTHER DOWN. THEY DIDNT NEED WORDS TO SAY THAT THEY BOTH HAVE FEELINGS FOR EACH OTHER. I HAVE RABIES RAAAAAHHHHHH
