Post Production (BHM)
SAS 11/04/2024
I attended a group viewing of our film's cut with Molly to provide any feedback and suggestions I may have. I loved how it was coming together, especially the montage scene and final shots on hill. The film then moved on to the grade and sound design.

Post Production (RTWW)
SAS 23/03/2024
Alongside Luca and Casper, I listened to the sound design that Casper made for the film, supplying feedback and ideas where necessary on how to elevate the absurdity.
I also visited Luca later in the week to watch the film with the score attached and give notes on the grade.

Day 2: BHM
My on-set role: Production Designer
Hardware store, Morningside. 15/03/2024.
For our second day of day of filming I didn’t need to bring any additional production elements, keeping the rig and costume with the equipment at Duncan’s flat. Shooting in the hardware store produced other challenges though. Before we started shooting, India and I rearranged products in the store that displayed obvious brands on their labels which may be distracting in the shots. One issue that was raised was a mirror, placed on the store room door, which reflected Gus camera operating and couldn’t be avoided. I needed to brainstorm how to conceal the mirror in a non-obvious way. Luckily, the hardware store was cluttered with an assortment of objects, and I quickly sourced some floor mats which i hung on a hook above the mirror.

Another problem that arose was the discomfort of the costume. Lev communicated to us that they experienced some bad back pain after the first day’s shoot from wearing the rig for too long. To avoid causing our actor any more pain, I decided I would remove the entire costume, rig and jacket, off of Lev, after every single take. This proved very effective.

Day 1: BHM
My on-set role: Production Designer
Duncan's flat, The Royal Mile. 14/03/2024.
I arrived an hour and half early to set to dress the living room for today's scenes.
The production design elements I brought to set today included:
helmet rig
balloons
rubber gloves
trenchcoat
red scarf
sponges
photos
photoframes
I then set up all the picture frames, and padding all the sharp edges in the living room with the sponges.

Duncan wanted the illusion of empty Co2 canisters on top of the bin. However, the metal canisters were too heavy to sit in place. So, to problem solve and achieve this look, I used gorilla tape, rolling it to be double-sided, and then discretely sticking the canisters to the paper inside the bin.
Tumblr media
In terms of costume, Lev found the helmet rig and coat moderately comfortable. I decided that I would dress Lev for each take to ensure there was continuity in how the scarf was placed.

Day 4: RTWW
My on-set role: Producer and 1st Assistant Director
Edinburgh Training and Conference Venue, The Royal Mile. 09/03/2024. 9:30am-3:30pm.
For our final day of filming we relocated to the Edinburgh Training and Conference offices. I was really excited for this day because it would involve our most absurd scene - the masseuses-to-businessmen-to-masseuses shot!
Upon arrival, I did some blocking with Luca. An issue was raised as that the window was not where Luca had thought it would be, meaning our whip pan would not actually "whip". I suggested that we could rearrange the desks to face the white board, and the window would then be 90 degrees from Buster's position, allowing us to still include the whip-pan. This arrangement proved successful and we were able to move on.
All the shots outlined for today's shoot were altered in some way. The most challenging task was working out the blocking for our whip-pan shot. This was particularly difficult due to the absurd nature of the shot. We were also working against time, and so I had to problem-solve the best way to get the masseuses to change their costumes in between takes. Fortunately, we were able to lock down a plan and complete the whip-pan in time for when all the actors needed to be off set.

Day 3: RTWW
My on-set role: Producer and 1st Assistant Director
Luca’s flat 2/3 Barony St. 8-5pm. 08/03/2024
Our shooting day today was our longest, with 16 different shots needed to be captured.
Fortunately, Cat spent the previous day dressing the set, allowing us to get straight into shooting this morning.
The significant challenge of today, was again, lighting configurations. I noticed that a significant amount of time was spent in between each shot to rearrange lights, test how they appeared through the lens, and then rearrange. This time was extended more so as Luca was both our DP and Director. While on another set, the director could work out blocking and prep actors while the DP created the composition, Luca had to be involved in both. Thus, our inability to secure a separate DP has caused us to fall behind on our schedule significantly. In an attempt to make up time, I made sure I was assisting with any problem-solving I could, while keeping crew up to date with progress made.

Day 2: RTWW
My on-set role: Producer and 1st Assistant Director
Soul Retreat. 2 Biggar Rd, Edinburgh. 06/03/2024 11am-5pm.
Today's shoot day was extremely exciting for everyone, as we got to film in an actual massage parlour with our whole crew on set. To keep everyone energised today, I made sandwiches and brought snacks for all crew.
We began the day by filming the advert. For this shot we faced a few blocking issues. We originally wanting Mrs Muskaan to be wheeling around the space during the ad to expose the different rooms in the parlour and the masseuses. Unfortunately, due to accessibility as well as noticeable shadows in the room, we had to alter this, and instead decided to position Lizzie in one place. Luca also changed his camera movement to a pan, allowing us to maximise the use of the room still and expose 4 extras in the background of the "ad".
After our camera team arrived, we commenced with shooting. The day ran exactly to my shoot schedule and we faced very few issues, which was very reassuring.
The only main challenge we tackled was the loss of lighting as it hit 4pm. Luca conversed with Gus for advice and then reported back to me. We then rearranged the final 4 shots to minimise creating obvious lighting inconsistencies.

DAY 1: RTWW
My on-set role: Producer and 1st Assistant Director
Quartermile street. 10am-1pm. 05/03/2024
Our first shoot day presented a few challenges, however we were still able to capture all the shots we needed and wrapped at a reasonable time.
Due to location restrictions, we had to relocate our set to a street around the corner. This street presented issues with construction noise and foot traffic from the public. Fortunately, we were able to work around it, waiting to film in between construction efforts, and employing Jack to step in as crowd control.

Final pre-production producers meeting/ AD meeting! (RTWW)
Mavyn cafe. 02/03/2024
Present: Luca, Lili, Joseph
I met Luca and Joseph at Mavyn to discuss our plan for our shoot next week. We resolved any outstanding issues and confirmed logistics with transport, deciding Cat would use her car to move equiptment from Uni>Luca's flat (base)>shoot locations.
After Joseph left, Luca and I spoke in depth about the proposed schedule.
As I will be 1st Assistant Directing our film, I created the shooting schedules and call sheets for each day, showing them to Luca for his advice and critique.
As day 2 and 3 of our shoot are particularly long, we realised that our main concern would be lighting. Additionally, our camera crew aren't available to be on set until 10/11am due to a uni presentation they have to give that morning. Thus, I decided we would maximise our lighting in the morning of shoot day 2 by shooting the advert first, which Luca can camera operate on his own camera. This would ensure that we can finish filming all the scenes on day 2 before sunset. For day 3, I scheduled the scenes so that the shots we shoot over sunset, are also sunset in the film. If this isn't achievable, we decided we would use a light on Luca's balcony to create fake sunlight for the closing shots.

Charity Shop Excursion with India! (BHM)
02/03/2024
Today India and I hit the charity shops across Tollcross and Bruntsfield to track down the perfect costume for Mr Balloonheadman. To our surprise, we found the best trenchcoat! It was long enough to conceal Lev beneath and would still allow room for the helmet rig to remain hidden. We purchased it as well as a red scarf.
Later in the day, I went to Poundland to buy the final items I needed such as sponges, rubber gloves, and tape.

Creative Exercise #2!
01/03/2024
For our second creative exercise, we were tasked to create a short film, where the identity of the individual is not revealed until the very end. For our film, we decided to create a Balloonhead Man prequel. This task challenged us to work together as a team finally, as well as gave us a chance to test our helmet rig.

PSA: Masseuses Needed!!! (RTWW)
My Home, Marchmont. 25/02/2024
Unfortunately, we still had not secured actors to play all 4 masseuse roles. Thus, I quickly created a new casting call, specific to the masseuse roles, using canva, and posted it onto 2 facebook groups, as well as our Napier Film Whatsapp chat.

Planning the Fundraiser! (RTWW)
My home, Marchmont. 27/02/2024
Today I helped plan our Fundraiser alongside Joseph, Jack, and Luca. We decided to host a private screening at the Scotsman Picturehouse. Unfortunately, I had a really bad flu this week. So Luca helped out in creating a poster for the fundraiser and we researched different methods to sell tickets securely online.
We managed to sell all 48 tickets, raising £240!

Pitch rehearsal meeting! (RTWW)
Edinburgh Napier Campus, Merchiston. Study room 8. 19/02/2024
Present: Casper, Cat, Luca, Joseph, Jack, Lili
Agenda: Discuss how we will present our pitch and time it
We met in a study room to rehearse and time our pitch. The pitch deck was put together by Luca after everyone wrote individual statements about themselves, as well as their department. Our pitch ran slightly over time, so we decided to cut unnecessary production details to ensure the story is understood, and the vision presented itself as achievable.
