Oh, there was a bite to this girl– sharp, gripping, as unexpected as the exotic accent falling from her lips. Trinity looked her over, slowly this time, her irritation quelled for the moment. 

“You know who I am.” It wasn’t a question; a statement, rather. If the mage was following so close, speaking in such a tone, she had a sense for Trinity’s origin. Confirmation came in the girl’s steady disposition, green eyes searing into near-black, and a smile appeared on her lips, albeit malicious and condescending. “Feel free to watch, then.”    

As if there was much to see. Centuries of well-practiced power culminated in a small whisper under her breath – a perversion of Latin, it was – hissed through her lips into being. The annoyance several paces behind them faltered, pawed at his face, then shrieked. He crumbled on the sidewalk, leaving passersby to either pour around him or stop and help. She rolled her eyes when two did.

Turning back, Trinity folded her arms over her chest, letting the foot traffic flow around them. “Now, you’re more than welcome to tag along, if you must, but if a deal is what you want, I don’t negotiate on my father’s behalf. I prefer ruining souls to buying them.”

“I know who you are.” Aubrey repeated, red painted lips curving into a mischievous smile. A spark of intrigue glistens in her eyes as she watches the man squirm and cry out in fright. It was music to her ears. The same rush that washed over her when she would hunt on the plains of Africa. Power always drew her in like a moth to a flame.

“Mmm, no deal wanted. I like my soul intact. And my good looks.” Although great mages of the past were known to do just that, they eventually grew to be dark and foul creatures, hungry with greed and power; blessed with immortality yet with no soul, skin clung to bone, food taste of dust, and eventually bowls and veins pumped like slow moving insects under gray, ugly flesh. 

“You come to New Orleans for entertainment?” She guessed. What that particular entertainment was, Aubrey couldn’t pinpoint. It was only a glimpse that she managed to capture a name: Trinity. Only someone of great power could block out a mages psychic ability. It felt almost sinful to say the name out loud.

She supposed she should be thankful. After all, he’d saved her. But, in her waning state, Caspian could only think to Run. Get out. She’d heard of shifters, read of werewolves and skinwalkers– but, this?  The panther stared back at her, eyes glowing brighter than the streetlights. 

Whispering with her next breath, the lights flickered out. Caspian turned on her heel and ran. How stupid, she thought to herself. What a stupid girl.

He bared his teeth, white and red tinting in the darkness. Sinking claws into his prey, jaws buried to the nose in flesh. He stilled. A whimper reaching his ears and twitched in the direction of the stranger he inadvertently rescued. Strong muscle and bone moved beneath flesh and silken fur as the creature retracted and turned his predatory gaze on the girl, a low, feral growl rolling from his chest.

The remaining light goes out in the alley to his anger and confusion. He did not command this. She had seen him. Like this. Violently ripping apart the intruder that appeared to have set his sights on her.

The moment she turns, Theron makes chase, powerful legs making great distance, until he’s in front of her, tail curled up, hissing like a raged wild cat. His claws swipe in warning for her to move no further. With no effort, he rushes towards her, heavy paws shifting to feet, and grabs the girl by the nape.

“You foolish woman.” He speaks, hoarse and harsh. Voice low as he takes in her trembling body, writhed with fright at his towering height. “Do you intend to die?”
