Patronising People: Why is Plain Packaging Plainly Wrong?
I wrote an article for a really great blogging platform for young liberals across the world called Libel. Here’s a preview: More and more countries have begun contemplating whether or not to introduce plain packaging for products containing tobacco. Not only does such a policy fail to produce the outcomes governments intend, but it also fails to respect the intellect and freedom of choice of…

Friends, liberals, countrymen...
Friends, liberals, countrymen…
Friends, liberal, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury Clegg, and to praise him. The good that men do lives after them; The bad is oft interred with their bones; So let it be with Clegg. The noble Farron Hath told you Clegg was ambitious: If it were so, it was a grievous fault, And grievously hath Clegg answer’d it. Here, under leave of Farron and the rest– For Farron is an honourable…

So, Nick Clegg chooses his man in the treasury to continue being his spokesperson on matters relating to the treasury, and this is apparently controversial? Seriously, as popular as Vince Cable is, it does not make any sense to swap Danny for Vince. Why? (a) Because Danny has ministerial in the treasury (b) the big things the Lib Dems will be championing and defending all pertain to BIS - where Vince is staying.

So long as you don’t expect the junior partner to get their own way all the time in a coalition, and so long as you understand that some policies are better than none, then you can claim to be sensitive to the political realities and complexities of the world of party politics.

Quote
Liberalism is not dead. It has a message for today. It believes in Democracy. It believes in a Government of aristocracy, not of birth, of wealth, or of landed or other possessions, but an Aristocracy of intelligence, of energy, of character.Liberalism is not a compromise between two extremes of opinion. It is a solution of its own for the ills of humanity. It is not a half way house between Conservatism and Socialism. It is not a house at all. It is a broad road of travel along which may walk honest pilgrims through the confusion of life, not without glimpses, at the end, of the walls and towers of the Celestial City”
Annual Report of the Dewsbury Liberal Association 1923
