On the other hand, PLAVE has released a second mini album recently... and they also got their first win at a music show! Music Core... and Show Champion, too! And they held their first "concert" as well! If you want, I could show you how it worked...

Me stumbling upon a kpop MV by a group called PLAVE with anime aesthetics: ooh this is super pretty, and they have really nice vocals

Me going to their youtube channel: oh snap all their mvs are in anime style

Me scrolling further and realizing they even have the same avatar characters in their dance practice and live performance videos?!

I know this is bound to happen, it already exists with streamers/youtubers but beyond the use as aesthetics, it feels a bit weird to me that you never get to see the person behind the voices?

I'm all for creative mediums and creative expression, and anime vibes are fun regardless, the music sounds great too, plus I understand the appeal for artists / idols remaining anonymous (I love my privacy too).

It's just the whole living perpetually behind a virtual character is too sci-fi and eery for me bruh 😭 There was a webtoon I read a bit last year discussing this whole idea of virtual idols and to see it in real life already is just -- well, I'm not ready to live in the matrix just yet guys haha

All in all their music sounds great though, I'll definitely be checking out their mini album.

I want to introduce you to this site...

Presenting the Virtual Idol Wiki, an informative online encyclopedia about... you guessed it, virtual idols.

But what is a virtual idol?

Well, I'll try to explain. A virtual idol is a fictional character that "promotes" as a singer, doing activities such as releasing music, doing photoshoots, or even appearing in real life events. They even hold concerts, too.

Generally, these characters appear as "cute anime girls", but male virtual idols also exist. There are also others who don't even look "anime-ish", and are drawn in different styles (such as semi-realistic).

Most of the time, the voices behind these characters aren't revealed, but there have been instances of famous voice actors being involved with these idols.

Also, the distinction must be made between a "virtual idol" and other concepts, such as a "voice library for a software", a "character from a piece of media", and especially "AI".

There is a real living person, a human, portraying the virtual idol, most of the time wearing special equipment (which tracks their movement or dancing and transfers it to the avatar), doing the voices and singing, and interacting with their audience. Or sometimes there can be separate people for each task. Or there may be no motion capture involved at all. Whatever the case, there are still humans involved.

I created this wiki some years ago. By that time, I had another name. At first, I didn't want to show it because people would misinterpret its purpose easily... But now, I don't want to hide it anymore. I want to share it with everyone, so we can all learn about this new (actually quite old) phenomenon in music together.
