La Plata, Argentina 4/11/2023 In-Custody Murder of Trans Woman

Sofia Fernandez (39), a nursing student and former linguistics professor, was found murdered in a police holding cell on April 11th, 2023. An autopsy determined she died as a result of asphyxiation due to a thong and a piece of mattress being pushed down her throat, obstructing her airways. Her body also showed bruising and signs of possible torture in the days preceding her death. The video surveillance system had been turned off without explanation prior to Ms. Fernandez’s death. On May 1st, 2024, ten police officers were arrested in connection to this case.

San Francisco, CA 5/15/2024 Homicide

On the afternoon of May 15th, 2024, Michelle Henry, a 25-year-old Black trans woman, was strangled and stabbed multiple times in San Francisco. Paramedics were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Per the Advocate, Ms. “Henry had been involved in the SF LGBT Center’s youth program. “Michelle was a ray of light for our team and so many others she connected with over the last two years at the center,” Executive Director Rebecca Rolfe told the publication. “Her warmth and presence were felt in every room she walked in. She was kind, deeply caring, courageous, and fearless. Michelle’s death is a profound loss for our community. There are no words to fully convey what we are collectively feeling right now — our grief is immense. We want to thank those who cherished Michelle, and our hearts are with all who had the opportunity to truly know, love, and care for her.”

“She was a light in our community and committed her life to trans liberation,” added Veronica Pritipaul, a navigation specialist at the center “With her passing, we have not only lost our dear sister, but a mentor and stalwart of the trans community.”

Michelle Henry was a cherished member of our community,” said Honey Mahogany, director of San Francisco’s Office of Transgender initiatives. “Her murder is a reminder to us that, even here in San Francisco, we have to continue fighting for the safety and well-being of all transgender people.”

“At 25, she had her whole life to look forward to,” noted an Instagram post from the city’s Transgender District. “She was a friend to everyone and always willing to help out another. Such a beautiful soul that was taken from us too soon.”

Some of Henry’s friends believe her killing was a hate crime, but police and prosecutors have not so far classified it as such.”

Mobile, AL 5/7/2024 Homicide

While driving home from work at around 3:30 am on the morning of Tuesday, May 7th, 2024, Tay Dior Thomas (17) was fatally shot in the 1600 block of Darwood Drive in Mobile, Alabama. Per investigators, her killer shot 18 bullets at her as she tried to escape. Ms. Thomas was beloved by many and was set to graduate from high school the following week.

Carl Washington Jr (20) has been arrested and is charged with shooting into a vehicle. At the time of this homicide, Washington was out on bond for shooting into another vehicle in 2022. Charlotte, NC 4/28/2024 Missing Man

Samuel Ryan “Sam” Haugh (21) last spoke with his family on April 28th, 2024, and his phone was turned off on May 1st, 2024, and his car was later located outside a Hampton Inn in Salisbury. He is 5’5” with blue eyes and red hair. Earlier in April, he had moved to Charlotte from Pennsylvania in order to be in a relationship with Michael Olarte (31), a man he had met online. Olarte, who had recently been released from prison for stabbing a man almost to death, died by suicide on May 5th, 2024.

Tee Arnold (36) aka Ace aka “Lagend Billions,” a trans man, was shot in the early morning of Wednesday, April 3rd, 2024 in the 800 block of Silks Run at The Village at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. He was taken to the hospital, but unfortunately he died as a result of his injuries.

Alejandro Korn, Buenos Aires, Argentina 3/11/2021 Missing Trans Man

Tehuel de la Torre, a 21-year-old transgender man, visited his friend Luis Alberto Ramos (then 37 years old) about a job on March 11th, 2021 in Alejandro Korn, Argentina, and he was never seen again. Investigators found Tehuel’s destroyed phone, burnt clothes, and a small amount of his blood in Ramos’ home, and a photo of Tehuel along with Ramos and Ramos’s friend, Oscar Alfredo Montes (then 46 years old), inside Montes’ home. The photo had been uploaded to Tehuel’s Google account on the evening of March 11th. Authorities believe Ramos and Montes killed Tehuel as an act of hate, and their trial is scheduled for July of 2024.

Koh Phangan, Thailand 8/2023 Homicide

In August of 2023, Dr. Edwin Arrieta Arteaga (44), a surgeon from Córdoba, Colombia, was killed, dismembered, and dumped on multiple locations by his partner, Daniel Sancho Bronchalo (29) of Spain. Bronchalo later confessed and helped police to find Mr. Arrieta’s remains. Dr. Arrieta has been described by friends as generous, helpful, friendly, kind, noble, transparent, helpful, humanitarian, and hard-working. His loss will be felt for years to come. THE MURDER OF JOHN UMBERGER

🏳️‍🌈 Hell’s Kitchen, NY 5/28/2022 Homicide 🏳️‍🌈

John Umberger (33), a political consultant in Washington DC, went out with friends to a gay bar, Q NYC, on 8th Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen on May 28th, 2022. He was seen a few hours later leaving with two strange men. On June 1st, 2022, Mr. Umberger was found dead inside his employer’s townhouse on the Upper East Side after his mother became concerned that he wasn’t responding to her texts.

Authorities state Mr. Umberger had been the victim of a “drug-facilitated theft,” which unfortunately resulted in his death. It is believed the thieves injected him with several powerful drugs and used his biometrics to steal over $25k from his bank account as well as his cell phone and credit cards.

Several men have reported surviving similar incidents at NYC gay bars between December 2021 and October 2022, and one other victim unfortunately died as well.

Robert Demaio (34) and Jayqwan Hamilton (35) have been arrested in this case and are charged with murder.

Brooklyn, NY 7/29/2023 Homicide

At around 11:15 pm on the night of Saturday, July 29th, 2023, O'Shea Sibley (28) was fatally stabbed at a Mobil gas station in Brooklyn, New York. Mr. Sibley, a successful dancer and choreographer, was reportedly killed for dancing to Beyoncé, along with three of his friends, while getting gas.

Investigators have identified the suspect, an unnamed 17-year-old boy, and are seeking his arrest. Witnesses state the suspect, as well as other members of his group, shouted antigay slurs at Mr. Sibley and his friends prior to the stabbing.

On April 22nd, 2023, Milembe Suleiman (43), an out lesbian from Tanzania, was brutally killed and mutilated in a suspected homophobic attack. In 2017, she had been arrested for proposing to her girlfriend, and she had more recently been listed in a publicly-posted homophobic contact list of those who were supposedly “corrupting the nation’s youth,” meaning people advocating for LGBTQ+ rights in Tanzania. NY, NY 2002 Unsolved Homicide

Sugar Bear (25), whose legal name was Andre Jamal Isaac, was last seen alive just before Thanksgiving in 2002 leaving her* apartment in East New York and getting into a red BMW-type coupe with “nice rims” driven by a “secret friend” who has been described as a Hispanic man. She reportedly went out without a coat and said she would be right back, and she left her wallet behind. She was never seen alive again.

Between December of 2002 and April of 2004, her dismembered body parts were discovered in three separate places - one location in Far Rockaway, Queens, and two locations in Moriches, Long Island. She had been shot in the head, and her murder has never been solved.
