talking about the half lighting again. Sorry

something that gets me every time i rewatch the van scene is mike’s half lighting. ever since the s2 monologue, the right half of mike’s face will be darkened when he’s in romantic situations and hiding his feelings for will (the left darkens when he does so for el). there’s always been a harsh contrast between the two halves of his face when this happens. there’s a clear line drawn between what he’s willing to show and what he’s hiding. it lightens up a little bit in 4x04, but not by much. he confession and flirting still don’t convey how he’s actually feeling because it runs so much deeper than that. mike turned his massive episode of deep depression and longing into “it’s not the same without you.” it’s a little bit closer to home, but not by much (shockingly)

then we get to the van scene. once will starts talking, mike doesn’t say a word, and yet this is the lightest we’ve seen his trademark half lighting. he’s hiding feelings about will, hence the right being darkened, but the line drawn between what mike is showing versus what he’s actually feeling is no longer so defined. mike isn’t saying anything to confirm the truth, but his facial expressions are genuine. we’re very close to the truth in this scene, and the truth has nothing to do with el. not here.
