Wishing everyone in the UK and London a gorgeous, safe and informative pride. As pride in London and UK black pride kicks off this week and next weekend, let’s remember why we are there, the importance of our privilege in circumstances like this, and who should be centred at events like this. Remember the trans women of colour who made this possible, and de-centre the cis white gays who you just wanna fuck. Give space to your trans siblings of all intersections as this is an important time for them. Know that if you’re coming to pride as a cis straight person that this day isn’t about you. And remember the people who are experiencing pride for the first time. The people who are new to the community and experiencing our beauty for the first time. Remember that people aren’t necessarily consenting to pictures, and that many of us, me included, find crowded events like pride anxiety inducing and overwhelming. Just because we exist within a public world does not mean we are other people’s public property. Sharing and storing imagery of other people without their consent is not something we should dismiss and see as irrelevant. One of the biggest challenges that I face on a day to day, hour to hour, minute to minute basis is the constant invasion of my privacy. Even though I know that it’s not my fault when these things are happening, it’s so crushingly embarrassing when I’m with other people. And the entitlement so often of these people then getting upset when we say no. The audacity. Just because you think I might look interesting, it doesn’t give you the right to take my picture. Done. Ironically I’m seeing the binary of consumption when it comes to visibly queer people in public. We are either consumed for entertainment - something for other people to take to make themselves feel some kind of way, or it’s disgust. It’s violence. It’s transphobia. There’s no in between. We need to be calling this out when we see it and not ignoring the fact that this is happening to visibly queer people 100% of the time. It’s so debilitating to just feel like there’s a massive problem in your life that you literally can’t stop, or change, and for me this is a micro-aggression that’s taken over my life, and that’s fucking pathetic to say. Scroll - I’ve never properly spoken about my childhood on here in detail, but writing about it recently and really going through it all has made me realise the importance of it in shaping who I am now. The photos here are a look back at me, not just for the gag, but I now feel a different connection with these pictures. I can see my lack of comfort and my shyness, but in a new light. Constantly through school I was told to speak up more. To engage with other people, to actually be present in class and not just sit at the back and speak to no one. (I guess now they’ve got their wish). I think many of us who are heavily bullied through school often actually get to a point where we forgot it even happened. We’ve moved on from that environment physically, but in actual fact we have been unfairly shaped by our childhood trauma into adults. The isolation and toxic cis/heteronormativity from this time leads to a constant feeling that by being ourselves now, we are in fact being too much. Being wrong. But that’s a lie. I’m only recently realising that and it’s an interesting realisation to have. To know something that happened so long ago, that wasn’t even my/our fault has made us into the people we are now. Seeing these pictures actually chokes me because not only do I see the uncomfortable. I see the beauty and the light. The potential. The hopes and aspirations that I don’t even know exist. The constant questioning of who and what I am, but knowing that one day I’ll get there. The passion. The worry. The fear. We should all be able to look back to our younger selves and feel proud of where we are now. Feel like we’ve made progress. Because we have and we will continue to do so. Absolute scream at how bewildered I look here but BABES I won the @blogosphere_magazine fashion influencer of the year last week! What I didn’t manage to say in my acceptance speech due to white wine and TERROR was how much this means as a non binary person to be acknowledged for my fashion and my style as it’s so intrinsically linked to my presence and identity and it’s so lovely to feel so loved for it so THANK YOU! I want to make sure that I’m always striving to be better and more informed about the community, and also allowing people to share their own words and stories, by amplifying their voices. This weekend has been really intense and I want to thank everyone for the love and support online, and for checking me on stuff when I needed to be checked. My hearts in the right place but often that’s not enough. Working with HSBC during pride, although seemed ok at the time, I realise now how that comes with a lot of privilege and I was blinded by that and want to apologise. I make choices everyday when it comes to work and this time I made a wrong one. The post has been taken down after the comments it received over the weekend. I’m going to try and really take time to focus on FRUITCAKE and find a charity to donate proceeds of the profits to, so if you have any suggestions of grass roots orgs in your local area I may not be aware of please comment them below.
