“camping in general sucks,” mathieu grumbles in response before making his way over. a wave of déjà vu crashes over him as he sits beside her after grabbing some chocolate. he isn’t making a s’more, they’re too messy, but no one else is around to stop him from sneaking a bit of chocolate. “yeah, i... definitely can agree with that.” mat pauses for a second after he speaks, and his focus turns towards the fire. the crackling flames cause him to frown slightly; he remembers time spent in his family’s cabin. before that stupid party, before manon died. it seemed like one of the only ways to get the whole beaumont family in the same room for more than a few moments.

however feeling the chocolate start melting between his fingers, mathieu finally bites into it. so much for not making a mess, he thinks as he forces his gaze away from the campfire. part of him wonders how long he sat in silence, certainly not helping sera’s b horror movie theory, but the other part of him doesn’t really care. “this is going to sound fucking dark, but at least if we die here then none of that shit back on campus will matter...”

night had already fallen by the time niko wandered back to the main campsite. he had picked up a thin tree branch while he was out exploring and saw this as the perfect opportunity to scare some of his classmates. finding the nearest tent, he slowly ran the branch across the side of the it and rustled some leaves at his feet. he paused for dramatic effect before creeping over to the entrance of the tent and yelling in surprise.

while mat doesn’t shriek when niko jumps out, he certainly flinches harder than he usually would. it didn’t take a genius to figure some idiot would try and do this, but it never occurred to him that his idiot would manage to get a scare success from him. “for fucks sake, niko.” mat shakes his head with a sigh, ignoring the small increase of his heart-rate. “you shouldn’t--what if i hit you or something in retaliation?” he asks seriously.

“ what the fuck ! “ an exaggerated curse came from jo as she let out a short little huff. in front of her sat the deflated working of a tent and the poles needed to put it up right clanged together in her hands. “ are they expecting me to be a friggin genuis to figure this shit out ? “ she moved them around trying to figure out how it all went together to form an actual upright and sleepable tent, “ somebody please help me, clearly i’m not smart enough to put a tent together … “

they were making them build their own tents. alright. all he has to do is follow instructions, right? what’s so hard about that? but the more he reads them, the more he realizes he doesn’t fully get it. being used to expensive cabins and other rental places instead of actual tents, nothing in his past prepared him for this---and it, for lack of a better word, frustrates him. maybe he’s overthinking it. yeah, that has to be it and not the fact he’s totally out of his element. with a frown he looks over towards jo, the instruction book still loosely in his grip. “not sure how much help i’d be,” mathieu admits sheepishly, shrugging halfheartedly as his eyes flicker to the unfinished tent near her. “maybe you can bribe someone into doing it for you.”
