Why Are Women’s Pockets So Small?

There has always a unsolved question as to why the pockets of women apparels are so small. The position and size of pocket on women’s apparels are always changing according to the change in time and fashion trends. women’s pockets were not always attached as they were actually a separate piece that could be worn with different outfits.

In the 17th to late 19th Century pockets were mainly worn under a women’s skirt and above their under-petticoat. Women were able to use these separate pockets found between their layers by openings in the side seams of their petticoats. On the, men’s pockets were sewn into each of their garment pieces similar to our items of clothing in the modern day.

Pockets are used as a place for their owners to keep their small personal items such as money, knives, keys, snacks, or thimbles. Pockets are used to store valuable items. Now, women use handbags instead of pockets to store their belongings. Women’s don’t use their pocket because that have hand bag so why bother about getting a big pocket when a small one is enough.

Pockets are often seen very unnecessary and useless item in women fashion. Pockets went out of fashion in the 1790’s making way for handbags. It wasn’t until later in the 1800’s when we saw the shift toward smaller pocket. There are many fake pockets are made on women’s apparels to make apparels fashionable without having the disadvantages of having a pocket. Men’s clothing still used pockets as a staple, but women began their full transition to the handbag which has continued until the 1920’s.

In decade of1920’s there were more women clothing that were inspired by men’s clothing that’s why pockets were put in women’s clothing. A Women’s Wear Daily article published in 1933 called out the potential of women pushing into what is originally men’s styling and silhouettes, more and more women tried to look fashionable. Though men’s styles were becoming increasingly prevalent in women’s clothing, so was the purse. Due to which pocket’s size reduced to make it look more fashionable.

Women concentrate more on making a slim look that is why they often skip pockets in clothes to make clothes look slimmer. When pocket is added to clothes it makes clothes look more wide. Jeans altered the approach that people had about pockets in clothing. With the durability that the denim garment provided, people began realizing the profit of large pockets.

A survey done by Pudding, measured 80 pairs of blue jeans with a 32-inch waistband, from some of the world’s largest retailers. The study shows that in comparison to men’s pockets, women’s pockets are 6.5% narrower and an entire 48% shorter. With an average of 5% shorter, but not as significant as the front pockets. Women can now use their handbags in place of their pockets.
