What is Social Media?

Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. The Office of Communications and Marketing manages the main Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube accounts.

We offer an array of tools, including one-on-one consults with schools, departments and offices looking to form or maintain an existing social media presence to discuss social media goals and strategy, as well as offer insights and ideas. Before creating any social media account, you must submit the Account Request Form. Be sure to check with your school’s communications office for any school specific regulations or branding guidelines.

Key Principles for Social Media Managers:

Social media is about conversations, community, connecting with the audience and building relationships. It is not just a broadcast channel or a sales and marketing tool.

Authenticity, honesty and open dialogue are key.

Social media not only allows you to hear what people say about you, but enables you to respond. Listen first, speak second.

Be compelling, useful, relevant and engaging. Don’t be afraid to try new things, but think through your efforts before kicking them off.

Popular Social Media Tools and Platforms:

Blog: A platform for casual dialogue and discussions on a specific topic or opinion.

Facebook: The world’s largest social network, with more than 1.55 billion monthly active users (as of the third quarter of 2015). Users create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including status updates. Brands create pages and Facebook users can “like” brands’ pages.

Twitter: A social networking/micro-blogging platform that allows groups and individuals to stay connected through the exchange of short status messages (140 character limit).

YouTube/Vimeo: Video hosting and watching websites.

Flickr: An image and video hosting website and online community. Photos can be shared on Facebook and Twitter and other social networking sites.

Instagram: A free photo and video sharing app that allows users to apply digital filters, frames and special effects to their photos and then share them on a variety of social networking sites.

LinkedIn: A place where groups of professionals with similar areas of interest can share information and participate in a conversations.

Philippines: Super Typhoon Rai (Odette) Humanitarian Needs and Priorities Revision (Dec 2021 - Jun 2022) (2 Feb 2022)

Just six weeks ago, Super Typhoon Rai, locally known as Odette, made its first landfall on 16 December 2021, bringing torrential rains, violent winds, floods and storm surges to the Visayas and Mindanao Islands. Overnight, the Typhoon left hundreds dead and hundreds of thousands of families homeless. Initial reports showed devastation across many areas of the impacted regions, but it is only over the subsequent weeks that the full scale of damage has come to light. Our initial assessments only hinted at the scale of destruction – nearly 1.7 million houses damaged or destroyed, massive damage to infrastructure, agricultural land, fishing communities and livelihoods across a vast geographic area of the country. In total, the Typhoon severely affected an estimated 9.9 million people across the six worst hit regions, leaving about 2.4 million people in need of assistance. More than a month on nearly 144,000 people remain displaced, and many more are living in damaged shelters with little access to basic services.

I congratulate the Government of the Philippines for their preparedness activities and for their response. The effectiveness of the pre-emptive evacuation of over 800,000 people and clear early warning messaging saved many lives.

Introduction to newspaper articles

There are many types of newspapers, from school/university publications to large news outlets like the Daily Mail, or Guardian. Local papers will focus more on events in and around the community, for example they may cover community fates or markets. They’ll also have stories about local people. They will still be written in a professional and formal way but may have a more conversational tone.

Unlike local papers, national publications will focus more on events that effect the wider populous. They will also report on noteworthy international events, such as crises and wars, but also sporting and entertainment events like the Olympics. They advertise to a much wider audience than local papers and need to relate to most of the population.

News articles are written to inform and educate readers on current affairs/events. They are used to provide readers with information they need/want to know about the world around them. You will either be told what to write your article on or have a choice of topics related to the module this assessment is for.

What is radio?

Radio is a form of wireless communication that allows the transmission and reception of audio signals over long distances. It uses electromagnetic waves to carry information through the air. Radio signals can be used to broadcast music, news, talk shows, and other types of audio content. This technology has played a significant role in entertainment, information dissemination, and communication throughout history.

What is Television?

Television, often referred to as TV, is a widely used medium of visual and audio communication. It is a system that transmits and receives moving images and sound over long distances. Televisions use a combination of electronic components to display broadcasted or pre-recorded visual content, such as television shows, movies, documentaries, and news programs. The transmission of these images and accompanying audio occurs through radio waves or cables. Television has become a prominent source of entertainment, information, and education, allowing viewers to engage with a wide range of content from the comfort of their homes.

Religion

The Philippines is predominantly Catholic, with around 80% of the population following the faith. The country's Catholic heritage can be seen in its many churches and religious festivals, such as the Sinulog festival in Cebu and the Ati-Atihan festival in Aklan. However, the Philippines is also home to a large Muslim population, particularly in the southern part of the country.

Food
