Laurie laughed as he followed her instructions. "I always try to look good in the moment, but it is certainly easier said than done."
He waited for her to finish photographing him before returning to a more relaxed stance, joking that he hoped she got a decent picture, and adjusted the strap of his shoulder bag.
"Work is the only thing going on in my life," Laurie then answered truthfully. "I live and breathe it and whilst many would say I'm throwing away my life, I unfortunately don't feel comfortable or feel myself in most other situations. I always need something to focus on and my work is certainly never dull, so I'm not short of new and exciting things... You know what, I think I might have one of the best jobs in the world. I like to think of myself as something of a dream-maker."
Tumblr media
Her smile brightens up a bit, the apprehension of approaching a new, random person on the street easing out of her a bit when he seems to be friendly. "Everyone has a good side." She laughs it out, and instructs him to shift his head towards the light with a few motions - "It's just about finding what works for you, more light, less light, adjusting the tilt of your head, the shift of your hips. But! This isn't something high-end, so it's just about making you look good in the moment."
She finds the shot and leans down to the camera to get it, and a few for good measure in case of blinks, people walking around them. Aria stands, lets the camera sit at her chest for a moment, and pulls a notepad from her bag. "Tell me a story, then, what's going on in your life right now?"

Laurie laughed. "Well, now I have some free time we can set aside our outside worries and just make small talk. Or whatever."
He then sighed. "But since you asked: life is as busy as ever and I'm working so hard that I slept in the chair of my office the other night just so I could do more work. Find a more dedicated man than me- I'll wait."
Laurie snickered, taking a sip of his coffee. It was something he shouldn't be too proud of, but Laurie's work was his life; stories in all their formats were the air he breathed and he wouldn't have it any other way and there was nothing that could possibly change that fact.
"So, how's things with you?" He then asked. "You don't look as good as you did the last time I saw you."
Tumblr media
Mars can't help a small grin at seeing a familiar face. "My fancy diagrams? Babes, I've been staring at these things for the past few hours and I'm sure my eyes are going to roll out of my head." He sets the tablet down, all too eager for someone like Laurie to talk to.
"It has been a while, hasn't it? How's life for a busy man like you? Working too hard as per usual?" Not that he can talk. Since Silas moved away and they called it off amicably, he's been head-down into his work too.

Laurie's need for coffee overpowered his need to find a quieter coffeeshop. He simply thought 'fuck it' before heading inside and standing in line for a drink, which felt like an eternity. After paying he shuffled through the shop, careful not to tread on anyone's foot or coat or to accidentally nudge a table too hard. He saw the free space before he saw Mars, but when he recognised who it was it seemed to be as though that free space had his name on it. Call it fate.
"Thanks," Laurie smiled, putting his coffee on the table before taking a seat. "Good to see you, Mars. It's been a while. You look like you've got a lot of work cut out for you there. I don't envy you and all those fancy diagrams."
Tumblr media
status: open where: a coffeeshop somewhere
It's blueprint after blueprint. The screen of the tablet sitting on his crossed leg is wearing on his eyes as he taps a few times to go back. Watches white lines on a blue backdrop delete themselves as he starts over on the zoomed in portion of this huge draft. The schematic is exhausting to look at. He's been staring for so long he doesn't even realize someone's been standing there. "Ay- sorry, didn't even see you there." He smiles a bit tiredly. "You can grab a seat, if you like. Been busy in here."

Laurie was amused. Of all the people out and about, she had picked him. He hoped he seemed interesting enough for him to have caught her eye. He’d done a few interviews before, but solely for literature related journals, magazines, or websites, so doing a little feature for the Times would be another accomplishment to add to his list.
“Sure,” he smiled. “Sounds like fun. Let’s do it. But when you take my picture you have to get my good side. If I even have one. But that’s up to you.”
Tumblr media
"Hey!" She calls out to the person on the sidewalk - her camera in hand (and she tries so hard not to think about the weight of the band at the back of her neck and what it reminds her of), gesturing with it and her other free one. Aria jogs up, bright smile and attempts to turn on the charm.
"I'm with the Times, we're doing a few articles inspired by the Humans of New York series. All I have to do is take a portrait, get a small quote from you that you'd like to be featured, maybe answer a few questions about said quote and you can be on your way." It's the same pitch she's given to a few people around the same few block radius, catching locals who look interesting and not quite busy.
It's always nerve-wracking, stopping New Yorkers on the street like this, but she hopes the promise of being in the Times quells whatever ire she encounters a bit.
"When you're featured, you'll be compensated, of course."

Laurie didn’t know why he agreed to a blind date. He’d been on a handful in the past and all of them ended badly and awkwardly. He had sworn off anything like that, but after much encouragement and persuasion he gave in. But no more blind dates after this one, whether it went well or not. Laurie liked to do things on his terms, especially when it came to his love life.
There were 8 million people in New York City, give or take, and his blind date could have been anyone, but it just had to be Congresswoman Zhang: someone of power and beauty and who was always in the political spotlight. Of course Laurie knew who she was- he kept up with current affairs despite his disdain for politics- and when he approached the table to greet her, wearing one of his nicer suits- he was almost tempted to address her as ‘Congresswoman’ or ‘Ms Zhang’. However, he was sure that, like himself, Mira would want to skip the formalities- handshakes included. This was an incredibly informal meeting after all and it would be nice to see the more personal side of her.
“Mira,” he greeted with a polite smile as he joined her at the table and unbuttoned his jacket. “It’s nice to meet you, too. Have you ordered drinks yet?”

A blind date?
How Mira ended up agreeing to go on a blind date was ludicrous. She was spending most of her time with Lee, but her campaign manager insisted she go out and explore. That it would help her image and appeal more to the people. The woman wouldn't stop nagging so she caved, already explaining that it had been arranged and it would look poorly if she didn't show up. Maybe it was time for a new campaign manager.
Laurie Morganthal.
She was half tempted to google him, but refrained, not wanting to ruin the chance for small talk about themselves. The congresswoman showed up to the restaurant earlier, allowing herself to be taken in through a back door and led to the table that was reserved for them, in an VIP area, waiting for her date to arrive.
Mira stands when a man, attractive, is led through into the room, a smile spreading across her features.
"Laurie, nice to meet you."

Laurie laughed softly. “I’ll always need you, for as long as you’re willing to do your job. You’re the only assistant I’ve had that actually knows what they’re doing and the only one who gets me.”
He took a sip of his drink. “And thanks, Cemre. I know I’ve always got you looking out for me. I like to think I know people as a whole, but sometimes it’s good to get a different perspective.”
If Laurie told Cemre how much he appreciated her when he felt that appreciation, it would be almost constantly and she’d be sick of hearing it. Even outside of the office she was still being her usual self: kind, compassionate, and selfless, and she did it so effortlessly.
“I’ll be lucky to even talk to a decent woman let alone get a kiss,” he snorted. “But I’m glad of the optimism. What about you, anyway? Who’s the lucky man you’ve got lined up?”
Tumblr media
"I feel horrible, as your assistant, I wasn't there to help put this look together. What if you don't need me?" She faux's sadness, a small pout forming on her features -- it last for a second.
Her brows knit together in confusion. Once you reach a certain age, it doesn't matter in relationships. It's about finding someone who makes you happy, makes you feel loved. "They are all fools then." Cemre meant that. Laurie was handsome, successful, and above all of it, he was kind and thoughtful. Qualities that should matter. "You give me a little time and I will work the crowd for you." She smiles brightly at him.
Her hip bumps into his. "Cheer up boss, we'll find you a midnight kiss."

“I’m what’s called an intermediate- not good, but not bad- and but what I can do is far less impressive than someone with Spanish blood: you’re a natural dancer because of it, I’m sure, so you’ll have to lead the way.”
Laurie then smiled his oh-so charming smile he had perfected to a t and enjoyed the warmth of Cynthia’s hand around his own. He lowered his voice, leaning in a little closer. “To think I’ve seen you naked in my bed before I’ve seen you at a party with your dancing shoes on.”
Tumblr media
Cynthia was grateful to see Laurie, it was nice to see someone with whom she needed to have no pretence and instead could be herself. The fact he was quite handsome helped too and she didn't hide that either.
When he put his glass down she chuckled and took his hand. "Oh you need not worry about that. I have Spanish blood, we're brought up dancing but I can tone it down, for beginners." She teased.

Laurie loved the view of the river and the twinkling lights of the city reflecting in the dark waters of the Hudson. What he loved most was how much life there was at night and how well the city that never slept lived up to its name. It was one of the things that drew Laurie to New York thirty years ago and he couldn’t imagine himself anywhere else, especially now he was at one of the first New Year’s parties he’d ever been to with the most interesting guests he’d ever mingled with.
He smiled, though, when he saw Rahi’s familiar face, answering, “The latter. If I’m honest, smoking disgusts me. But it does look good on film and that makes me angry…”
Laurie took a sip of his drink- his favourite scotch whisky that he was surprised they even offered at the bar. It would be the only beverage he’d be drinking tonight, that was for sure.
“Thinking about me?” He then echoed with a hint of a smile. “I’m flattered. It better be because you couldn’t imagine trusting and relying on anyone else in the world to publish your autobiography because you know I’m the only man to do your story justice. If I’m wrong- and I seldom am- I’ll buy your drinks for the rest of the night.”
Tumblr media

He finds Laurie outside, where friends and couples smoke and drink as they chat. Leaning a bit too mindlessly over the parapet. Rahi squeezes through the small crowd to get to him. "Smoker?" He asks. They know a lot about each other, and yet — all the basics escape him now. "Or just needed some air?"
Another sip off his drink, before Rahi sets it down. It balances oddly atop the ledge. "...I've actually been thinking about you."

“Sure. I’ll buy my bestselling writer anything they want to drink, especially if their next project is a big hit. That’d be a win for us both. Hell, I’ll buy you a whole damn bar.”
The idea of buying a bar seemed fun and something that Laurie would do for others rather than for himself. He knew how to run a business, but not a business that was separately run by alcohol. That was a fine line for Laurie, given his family history and predispositions, and he couldn’t afford to have more than a casual relationship with alcohol otherwise his life would crumble into dust.
“People are always boring me to death,” Laurie laughed. “Most of the time I shut it out, but there’s something about a big party that makes people persist with shitty small talk. As long as you talk books I’m a happy man.”
Tumblr media
Val's grin only extends tenfold and they clap their hands together. "Yes!" Hearing an affirmation from Laurie is like gold, especially when it comes to a new idea. Sure, Val talked shop about potential plot-lines in their series. But this is something completely new. Fantasy mixed with something different. Maybe chaotic, like them. And with their own unique perspective as someone with low vision.
"You offerin' to get me a drink, love? I'm flattered!" They tease, but clearly are just excited to talk about. "I'll flesh it out, promise. And I won't stop workin' on Margot - that's for sure. But... I think it could be such a fun little romp, yeah?" They hold out a hand to find the counter, taking a second as Laurie takes his time. "Wait, what other conversations this evening? People borin' you to death? You know I can always talk your ear off, darling."
