Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley

Here comes the review for the demo of the upcoming game Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley! This is the first review for a game demo that I've posted on this here tumblr. Originally it was supposed to be a post of several demos, but I played this, wrote it and then had nothing left in me. So here's a little sneak peek of what I hope to start doing here?

This is the demo for the first ever video game based on Tove Jansson’s epic book and comic strip series based in and around Moominvalley and their titular character Moomintroll’s best friend Snufkin. The demo was a treat short – taking about 20–30 minutes to complete – and sweet, both musically and visually. We get a lovely insight to the different mechanics of the game, reassuring the player in that they challenges posed by the game are not prohibitively difficult and can instead be quite refreshing and innovative. I especially loved aiming birds at park keepers with the aid of my harmonica. Moominvalley says ACAB (as it has been pretty much since its inception).

The only problems I really had was that the visuals kind of made me feel weird in the eyes/brain when Snufkin ran and that a few of the dialogue boxes seemed to have kerning issues. But maybe this, like some of the other thoughts I had, could be fixed by the time the game releases in Q1 of 2024. Some of which included wishing for the game to support WASD controls for movement as well as the hotkey remapping that would require so that the game could be played with only one hand; telling players that pressing shift while running can temporarily increase the run speed and finally, the follower kind of disappearing and reappearing randomly.
