i havent dont anywhere near a full playthrough of totk before finishing it so its possible im just missing fragments of lore mentioned somewhere i havent checked yet.....but anyways the original calamity story is still confusing for me to fit within totk esp with the ancient hero SO i imagine that was purposeful and probably going to be the plot (at least in part) of a dlc should we get one.....

thinkin about the chosen one story told from the pov of the person standing next to them again. thinkin about the one who has to stand by and watch the chosen one become a weapon, a sacrifice, an offering to the machinations of plot and can do nothing but make sure they’re fed and rested and soothe them when they wake up screaming from nightmares. thinkin about the fierce devotion that has to exist to follow someone to the end of the world just so they don’t have to die alone. thinkin about the terror they’d feel every step of the journey knowing it’s not their place to change how the story plays out. thinkin thinkin thinkin.

i rly loved totk don’t get me wrong but ! imagine if the story rly set the stakes and actually committed to them, gave u the chance to actually connect with the sages - ancient ones too - only for it to be taken away to rly cement the gravity of the upheaval. pushing even further, if the roles were reversed and it was zelda on the current end trying to keep what remains of hyrule safe while link fulfills a prophecy as the first hero back in ancient times . . . just a balance of storylines and zelinks’ character arcs between botw and totk. a proper second chance for both of them that doesn’t necessarily prove their fates (and their abuser, in zelda’s case) right . . . yknow?

no bcs i do think totk would have had a more interesting ending if nintendo knew how to commit to their own stakes, especially when it comes to links arm. i think it could have been such a nuanced and thought provoking finish to a game that is essentially about second chances with link losing raurus arm and not magically getting his own back. the implications on choice and loss. the implications on his purpose as a hero, a fighter, with his good arm gone and no longer able to wield a sword (at least, in a way he usually did). the implications on disability and what that even means or looks like in a post-totk hyrule still grappling with the calamity , the upheaval, and the surely longterm effects of the gloom sickness.
