laneyandrews:
Laney was certain starvation would set in eventually. Actually, she was quite certain she was set on being as dramatic as humanly possible, but the difference was negligible. With very little to do in such a small, cramped space but watch people and contemplate the raging storm outside, she’d picked the former. New faces mingled with familiar faces, and she catalogued them, one by one. Watching people had become something of a hobby; perhaps it came secondary to framing them. For all of her jokes, she liked to capture people at their most real. She didn’t have flash drives full of third floor being ridiculous, she had candids of people laughing, hugging, crying, windswept on the balcony. They all had stories, and her goal was to capture the whole thing in just a moment. When a new face entered the shelter, Laney was instantly intrigued. Coupled with what was surely starvation, she was compelled to raise her hand with a grin, “Depends, what are you having?”

When someone who appeared to be a very pretty girl responded to her query, Abra felt relieved that the room was dark enough to hopefully hide her blush. Pretty girls often had a tendency to make her blush. Pretty boys too, in fact, and she hated that it perhaps betrayed her inexperience. But it didn't this time, the dark enough to keep things hidden from view, and as she shifted over towards the pretty girl in question, she realized the dimness made it far easier for her to keep talking to her. "Lemon cookies... baked them from scratch. Granola bars, some fresh fruit, pretzels, some sodas." Pulling an unopened glass bottle from her travel cooler, she added, "And my personal favorite, a bottle of gin. Not necessarily filling, but definitely a lot of fun."

Brittany had been shuffling about the basement in an anxious stupor; finding random task to occupy herself with to keep her mind off the storm, and striking up small conversations here and there. The entrance of a small brunette suddenly pervaded her attention, as she had no idea who this woman was. “I’m kind of hungry, but I’m not suppose to take food from strangers.”
Abra nodded. Seemed fair to her, and she’d only just arrived to the building. Absolutely no one would know her, not even her new roommate. “I’m Abra,” she offered. “New to the building and realizing I chose a very bad time to move in.” Reaching into her bag, she retrieved a granola bar. “These are pre-wrapped, so I promise I haven’t done anything to them.” Not that she’d done anything to the cookies she baked herself, but she thought maybe the fact that the granola bars were store-bought would make them easier to trust.

Christian had been sitting in the one of the corners by himself with a bag of snacks between his legs and a guitar on his lap. He had been in his own little world, just kind of strumming his guitar as quietly as he could, not really wanting to draw attention to himself. He knew that being in such a tight space, voices and sounds in general would echo, so he didn’t want to add to the possible headaches that everyone might have.
He had just stopped strumming when he heard a voice that brought him out of his world for just a second. “Oh. No, thank you. I have some myself, but I’d be willing to see what you have and possibly do a trade.” Looking over at her, a huge smile came across his face, hoping that the lady had something good.

An offer to trade sounded absolutely perfect, and she hoped she had something he’d like. She’d been snacking on the same things throughout her drive, and she realized she’d way overpacked, but she hadn’t wanted to run out of food and be forced to eat somewhere along the way. Sliding a little closer to him, she opened up cooler up and said, “I’ve got a few drinks... seltzer, Coke, Sprite. And a bottle of gin I wanted cool enough to mix a drink when I got here.” She settled back against the wall, taking a deep breath as she said, “I literally just got here. Moving at the worst time ever, that’s me.” Opening her bag, she said, “Granola bars, some pretzels... An apple. And lemon cookies. Baked them myself.” Offering her potential new friend a grin, she asked, “So what have you got?”

It was just like her to move into a new building the very day a storm hit, and Abra kicked herself for being the sort of person who never paid much attention to the news. The news always made it so difficult to be positive, and she thrived on being positive. Leaving her belongings in a U-Haul and hoping they’d be there when she got back, Abra made her way down to the basement she’d been told to report to with only her purse and travel cooler in hand. At least I’ve got snacks, she thought. Setting her bags down, she took a seat as far away from anyone else as she could, thinking it best to get space if she could in such a cramped basement. Digging through her bag, she did an inventory of the foods she had and knew it was more than she’d need.
“Hey, is anyone hungry?”

tylerclarke:
The air was heavy down in the basement as everyone seemed to be freaked out about the hurricane raging through Whatever. Tyler was sure everyone was in the same boat, being freaked out about the brewing storm but not wanting it to show. The lack of hardly anything to do save for sit there and attempt small talk with his neighbors he hardly knew or play some shitty board game was going to drive Tyler nuts before long. So he had decided to choose the lesser of two evils.
“It’s time for a game, suckers.” He announced, “I’m ready to kick some ass if anyone wants to play Goldfish with this shitty deck of cards. So who’s taking me up on my offer so that we can be a little less bored?”
Tumblr media
“Is Goldfish a game I should know?” She’d never heard of it, and she thought perhaps he’d meant to say Go Fish, but then maybe it was some whole new game with rules she’d be completely unfamiliar with. Either way, being beaten at a game she’d never heard of was far better than sitting against the wall and staring at the room full of strangers she’d been hustled into. Leave it to Abra to move into a building on the very day disaster struck.
