I have begun to realize that maybe one of the biggest reasons that the United States may be more successful than the United Kingdom when it comes to total film grossing may be because the United Kingdom is not producing and releasing as may homegrown films as the United States. People want to go see movies that their country produces more than someone else's. A perfect example is this summer class, as this is my first time really watching films from outside the United States. I never really felt like it was necessary for me to go out and look for movies produced in other countries, and this may be the case with Britain.

When you compare the revenue being made from the movies being shown in Britain compared to the United States, although they have two different currencies, when you exchange them to the same the United States is making about 10 times more than them per year on average.

I thought all people in the United Kingdom would feel like they are the same but the countries that make up the United Kingdom feel like they are splitting apart. They do not seem to all identify themselves as British and all have different types of National Identity.

There is evidence that people in Scotland are increasingly likely to describe themselves as Scottish, and less likely to say they are British. A 2006 study by social scientists at the Universities of Edinburgh, Dundee, St Andrews and Lancaster shows that more than eight out of ten people in Scotland saw themselves as Scottish. At the same time, there has been a long-term decline in Scots defining themselves as British, although more than half of the people in the survey saw themselves as British.[26][27]
In the 2011 Census in Scotland:[28]
62% identified themselves as Scottish only
18% identified themselves as Scottish and British
8% identified themselves as British only
The Scottish National Party MSP and Cabinet Secretary for Justice, Kenny MacAskill gave the following submission to the UK Parliament's Joint Committee on Human Rights in March 2008 discussing a British Bill of Rights:

The British government has sought to promote Britishness with the inaugural Veterans' Day (now called Armed Forces Day), first held on 27 June 2006. As well as celebrating the achievements of members of the armed forces, at the first event for the celebration Brown said:Scots and people from the rest of the UK share the purpose—that Britain has something to say to the rest of the world about the values of freedom, democracy, and the dignity of the people that you stand up for. So at a time when people can talk about football and devolution and money, it is important that we also remember the values that we share in common.[18]

Something I wanted to figure out was what is the national identity of Britain. When researching this I found the term called “Britishness”.
Britishness is the state or quality of being British,[2][3] or of embodying British characteristics.[3] It comprises the claimed qualities that bind and distinguish the British people and form the basis of their unity and identity,[4] and the expressions of British culture—such as habits, behaviours, or symbols—that have a common, familiar or iconic quality readily identifiable with the United Kingdom. Dialogue about the legitimacy and authenticity of Britishness is intrinsically tied with power relations and politics;[5] in terms of nationhood and belonging, expressing or recognising one's Britishness provokes a range of responses and attitudes, such as advocacy, indifference, or rejection.[5]

I think a major reason why the United States makes more movies than the United Kingdom is because they are a bigger country with a bigger following.

After doing some research I have now come to realize how many more movies we produce in the United States compared to a country like the United Kingdom. Looking on IMDb the number of movies between the countries the United States produces way more than that of the United Kingdom. Especially in the action category, the United States is producing more this year than the United Kingdom probably will in the next five. It just shows how much larger the United States film industry is than the Uk. Could one of the explanations for this be that all of the good British actors are coming over here? Part of me believes that is the reason as so many British actors are coming over here and having success that they probably do not want to go back and make films in the United Kingdom, Some actors I can think of maybe Henry Cavill who plays Superman. Tom Holland who plays spiderman is also another good example as both of them are having success over here in the United States.

I found this article on some of the highest grossing british films of all time, and although some may surprise you, there is one thing they all have in common, a massive budget. All these movies have massive budgets and I would have been interested in seeing what kind of movie Abbas Kiarostami could have made with a budget that one of the star wars movies was given.

Lately, something I have noticed when talking about films is the funding that they had to make it. When Abbas Kiarostami made his film outside of Iran I thought I had read an article that said a Big reason as to why he did it was to filming. The following description I found shows how this organization has a wide variety of funding opportunities.
The BFI is the lead organisation for film in the UK. It distributes Lottery funds for film and has a wide range of support schemes for film funding including: Development funding; Production funding; Completion funding; International co-production funding; First feature funding; BFI NET.WORKfor new and emerging directors, writers and producers; BFI Vision Awards for new generation producers and production companies. The BFI offers a specialised funding application process for Documentary support via pitching sessions held three times each year. The BFI website also hosts a useful Funding Finder guide to the wide range of funding opportunities for new and emerging writers, directors or producers, to assist with short films, features and professional development.

In the list that I found I have had some of the movies that were being made in the United Kindom having a budget of only 700,000 dollars. When I look at that it makes me wonder why even make the movie as I feel like with that little of a budget that there is no way the movie is going to be successful. When you look at movies that generally do very well regardless of it being US or UK they usually have a budget of a couple hundred million dollars. They are able to do things that would not be possible with a 700,000 dollar budget. That is why I also feel like movies in the United States are more successful as well because they generally have a bigger budget. For example, the budget for star wars which had grossed 1.8 billion dollars was 217 million. Spending over 200 million on a movie seems to be a constant theme to ensuring a movie will do well at the box office. The Kingsman: The Golden Circle which is a very good movie but was produced in the UK had a budget of only 100 million and grossed over 400 million. So if they had spent 200 million to produce the movie does that mean they could have possibly grossed over 800 million. Maybe if the Uk invested as much into their movies as the US they could be just as successful as them.

The highest grossing action movie of 2017 for the United States was Star Wars episode 8 which grossed over 1.8 billion dollars. In the list of Uk films, I found there were no movies that even grossed over 500 million dollars. But the top 10 grossing movies in the US for 2017 all eclipsed that. I expect 2018 to have an even higher number with the New Avengers being recently released recently and is an extremely popular movie. There are some very good films that were produced in the Uk like Wolverine, Kingsman the Secret Service, and Resident Evil. But these movies do not compare when it comes to the movies that Marvel is able to put out as they are the most popular movies every time one comes out.

I found some articles that showed action movies that were produced in the Uk and would be considered Uk movies. With this list that I found there were only about 90 movies on it. When you compare this to the United States it had about half the amount, but that is just for the year 2017 under the action category. If you were to include all of the movies just made in the past 10 years that were action in the US it would be astronomically greater than that made in the United Kingdom.
