The Top 10 Films Of 2023
Ironically the year I got a cinema pass is the year I saw the least films (méniéres disease is a cunt). I tried to see as much as I can this year, but things got in the way. So this is a list of my favorites. I missed a bit sadly.
So before I begin, this is my list and I am going by if it was released this year in cinemas, DVDs or streaming. I haven’t seen all films this year, but I would love your suggestions.
10. Scream VI (Tyler Gillett & Matt Bettinelli-Olpin)
Tumblr media
I have always been a fan of the Scream series from a very young age. Even then I knew how intelligent the series was a horror series. Postmodern horror can either go very well or be a parody of itself (although I still think the first Scary Movie is hilarious for being a parody of a parody). After Wes Craven’s sad passing, the idea of anyone taking over the project and maintaining his vision wasn’t going to be easy. But when I saw that the directors of Ready Or Not would be taking over the wheel, I had a sigh of relief. The previous reboot Scream (2022) was a brilliant return to form (I still think Scream IV gets a hard time as it is very enjoyable), but they couldn’t do the same thing that film did. So changing the scenery really helped, as it’s supposed to be a horror the characters can’t escape. Brilliant ensemble cast, with outstanding performances from Melissa Barrera & Jenna Ortega, who sadly won’t be coming back to the series. Incredibly enjoyable, smart, funny and and enough blood and gore to satisfy any horror fans.
9. Pearl (Ti West)
Tumblr media
I have been a fan of West’s films for a while now, and I have seen his talent progress. I always knew that his masterpiece was around the corner and here we have it. The previous film to this X which was the first in this trilogy was very good, but it did have West’s Tarantino influence all over it. For this film he has gone back in time. In fact so far back to when films looked like content you would find on TCM, and this was all purposefully done. In many ways this is West’s love letter not just to horror but cinema itself, going from the classic Hollywood style to the psychopathic turns that Hitchcock and DePalma would letter explore. Mia Goth stars in and co wrote the film, and she perfectly adopts the role of a wannabe star slowly progressing into sadistic depravity. The best way to describe this film is flawless. Everything is within its purpose and more.
8. Barbie (Greta Gerwig)
Tumblr media
I really wasn’t expecting much from this film. I’ve seen this films being made in order to push a product in a satirical post modernist way before and they’ve always come as rather cringe or completely missing the mark. When I heard Gerwig was directing it, I was oddly interested. While this film is mostly known for being rather political, I don’t really feel that it was doing anything that wasn’t said before but props for going at it in a unique way. The most unique thing about the film is the incredibly odd humour it has. There’s something about the script of this film and how the actors perform it, it reminds me of something children would say while playing with the Barbie toys. Margot Robbie gives a great lead performance but sadly Ryan Gosling really steals the show, taking the film into a pure realm of childish chaos. Props to Gerwig for creating a very colourful world for the film. I will never see the colour pink the same again. Don’t let this pass you by if you are turned off by the fact it’s a toy film or it’s a bit too lefty or feminist for you. Just shut up and laugh.
7. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley)
Tumblr media
I’m not afraid to admit my guilty pleasures. I saw the trailer for this and I thought this looked fun and would waste an hour or 2. But I was pleasantly surprised at how much effort the film makers actually made to this film. Yes it’s silly, yes it’s rather dumb and it is mostly a comedy film, but it has a lot of heart and easily it all could have gone south. The screenplay on this had a lot of great beats, hilarious scenes and a lot of dialogue and story hits that made me think “wow, I didn’t expect a film like this.” Chris Pine always gives a great performance as he is naturally charismatic as hell, but the real scene stealer is Hugh Grant as the villain, who has been doing this role quite a bit now and he always brings comedy to the role. Also having played the rpg game that it is based off of, the film is rather respectful to the source, so big kudos for that.
6. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 (James Gunn)
Tumblr media
I’m not going to lie, since Avengers: Endgame, Marvel is slowing going downhill. And I don’t see it coming out of this funk. But there is a saving grace, James Gunn has come back to give his final addition to this trilogy. I have never seen a bad Gunn film, so I’m not surprised that this wouldn’t be good. But behind Gunn’s humour is heart, and this film has a lot of heart and oddly one of the most touching messages about animal rights. The cast always works well together, but I have to give props to Bradley Coopers performance. He may not be genuinely on the screen, but he gives a fantastic voice performance. Chris Pratt has always been good, but there are moments in the film where he gets dramatic and he’s fantastic. A brilliant ending to a perfect film trilogy, and if you want to avoid this film because you don’t like Marvel or superhero films, please give it a watch. At its heart it’s a comedy action film, and one of the better ones.
5. When Evil Lurks (Demián Rugna)
Tumblr media
I saw one scene from this film that ruined the shock value and I’m sad I did, because it’s better going into this film with no idea what is or will happen. I haven’t seen many Argentinian horrors, but Rugna’s work on this is fantastic. Taking the zombie/possession sides of Rec and mixing it with the panic of Children Of Men, it is an incredibly unique take on this genre. A horror film isn’t without its special effects, and this film dwells into almost Cronenberg territories, which some brilliant gore and disgusting body horror. Also the film has a great lore it creates for the world it is in. A must watch for fans of artistic horror films if you think A24 films are a bit too tame.
4. Dream Scenario (Kristoffer Borgli)
Tumblr media
I am so glad that Nicholas Cage is more than just a meme these days as there was a period where he was delving into the realms of mockery, which I thought was a shame because beside his insanity, he is one of the best actors currently working today. In this film he provides a rather nuanced performance and it really bodes well to the Charlie Kaufmanesque world that this film exists in as the protagonist dwells further into what seems like a jovial joke to a Kafka nightmare. I haven’t seen any of Borgli’s films before but his work on this is perfect, hitting the right comic tones, satirical jeers and dramatic human moments.  A unique premise which executed perfectly.
3. Talk To Me (Danny & Michael Philippou)
Tumblr media
Sometimes talent can appear from out of nowhere. The Philippou twins were originally You Tube stars and to see someone from that world go into horror, make one of the most unique and well made horror films I have seen in a while is incredibly surprising. When it comes to possession or supernatural horror, it is hard to approach the content and make it interesting. A great ensemble cast too, with brilliant dramatic and comedic performances. The screenplay is great too, with great characters and dialogue throughout. And if you wanted shocking and creepy moments, this would make an Ari Aster fan very happy. Currently its on Netflix, so please give this a watch.
2. The Whale (Darren Aronofsky)
Tumblr media
I’ve always enjoyed Brendan Fraser’s films in the 90’s and early 2000’s, but I will admit he was typecast, which sadly was the reason his career faltered. I did see interviews with him and it turns out he is one of the nicest guys on the planet. In fact he’s so much that people online begged for him to come back to acting, to the point where he did and broke out into tears when talking about it. I didn’t expect to see him working with Aronofsky of all people, and I really didn’t expect this performance from him. While he is fantastic in this and well deserves his Oscar for it, I really need to highlight the brilliant supporting cast with an exceptional performance from Hong Chau. While this film is based on a play, Aronofsky did present it wonderfully. He is very much an over the top visual director, so a boxed in set up isn’t really his style, but he handled the direction so well. But the screenplay by original playwright Samuel D. Hunter is the real meat on this film
Tár (Todd Field)
Tumblr media
In many ways this film is hard to describe and even having it in my top of the year is odd. It isn’t the most entertaining watch, it takes its time a lot and has head scratching moments, but you have to utterly admire the craft. I haven’t even seen any of Field's films before. I’ve seen him act in Eyes Wide Shut and that’s about it. But when it comes to film making, I know this guy is a proper master of the craft. It’s a film that takes its time and lets the script flow very naturally. There is small little cuts of tension throughout that can be missed if you blink, but it’s all building up to something and in many ways, the film wouldn’t be what it was if Cate Blanchet didn’t have such a captivating performance. I love nuance when it’s done well and this is executed beautifully. A proper piece of art without being overly artistic and must see for a fan of cinema.

The Top 10 Albums Of 2023
Ironically the year that I had my hearing loss start was the year I listened to so much music. Thank you very much bandcamp for providing alot of free entertainment., Hopefully my condition doesn't affect my idiosyncrasies.
A good mix this year and trying to cull anything this year wasn't the easiest. But I think this is the best i could come up with.
And as always, I didn’t hear every album this year, this is my person list and I counted anything released this year.
10. Pupil Slicer - Blossom
Tumblr media
With their first album Mirrors, I was hooked with their chaotic blend of abrasive math core and powerful deathcore moments. When I saw the track times on this, I was surprised to see no shorter songs, and this being a concept album, I was expecting something very different and forward thinking. In many ways this is what I thought, but it isn’t complete foreign waters for the band. One of the most interesting things about this band is that they do their perspective genres in such a way, I draw blanks on making comparisons. Kate Davies approach to guitar and the choices she and the rest of the band make are some of the most unique sounds I’ve heard all year. And her vocals are like something I would expect to hear in a mental ward. One of the most exciting bands to come from the UK at the moment.
Genres: Mathcore, Post Hardcore, Extreme Metal, Progressive Metal, Deathcore
Country of origin: England
9. Cattle Decapitation - Terrasite
Tumblr media
Their last release Death Atlas just barely missed my list the year it came out, but I knew that it was a modern metal masterpiece and whatever these guys do next would blow me away. And they never fail to deliver. Concept wise and cover art already sold me on this album, with the band taking their misanthropy to knew satirical, creative and sadly true levels, musically this album is technical, progressive, insane and forward thinking compared to their other death metal associates. As always, David McGraw’s drumming is the best in modern extreme metal but the rest of the bands musical ability is just as otherworldly. When it comes to vocals in extreme metal, if a vocalist can do something exciting or different with their voice it always impresses me, but Travis Ryan is something else. His range and approach to this style is unlike any I’ve ever heard and how he delivers his lyrics with his ability to change his voice is thespian level. One of the best death metal albums ever made in my opinion.
Genres: Death Metal, Technical Death Metal, Extreme Metal, Progressive Metal
Country of origin: USA
8. Squid - O Monolith
Tumblr media
They made my top 10 with their debut and I knew that these guys had a lot more to offer. A perfect follow up to Bright Green Fields, with amazing songwriting and technical ability, what the album also offers is a more succulent and palatable offering. Not contemporary in the slightest but close enough to be enjoyable by indie heads. Ollie Judge’s vocals on this album are just as manic as ever and some of the arrangements both technical and choice of instruments are mind-blowing. It just proves that modern prog in the UK is as vibrant as it ever was, with these guys, Black Midi & Black Country, New Road being the holy trinity of indie avant prog. I know whatever these guys do next, it is going to be amazing.
Genres: Art Rock, Experimental Rock, Progressive Rock, Indie Rock, Avante Garde
Country of origin: England
7. Good NightOwl - Capital
Tumblr media
Financially I haven’t been as generous with artists. So to keep my musical palette fed, I have been searching online for anything free I can download. I have some found some gems, but this is a diamond in the rough (there’s a lot of rough sadly). A one man project, Good NightOwl is a beautiful diverse musical journey. Complex with rhythm, melody and harmony, Daniel Cupp’s vocal and instrumental ability is nothing to be sneered it, with his vocal range being very impressive. Production wise it isn’t the cleanest, but what he is able to create is nothing short of amazing. If you’ve ever seen this guys You Tube stuff, he doesn’t seem to take himself very seriously, but on this album he does add some interesting satirical views on capitalism and consumerism. Good news is that his new album is out at the start of next year, and I highly recomend you give him money to make even more music (and odd comedy).
Genres: Progressive Rock, Eclectic Prog, Math Rock, Crossover Prog, Art Rock, Experimental Rock
Country of origin: USA
6. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse; Or, Dawn Of Eternal Night: An Annihilation Of Planet Earth & The Beginning Of Merciless Damnation
Tumblr media
When these guys released Infest the Rats Nest, I think everyone (especially metalheads) were begging for them to return to this thrash metal style. So thankfully they’ve returned with this sound, but this time it’s proggier and heavier. The talent these guys possess never fails to impress me. The dynamic switch between Stu Mackenzie & Ambrose Kenny Smith’s vocals make this lyrical story of fantasy, environmentalism and apocalypse potent, enjoyable and kind of enjoyably goofy. Also naming your album this title and giving it this artwork, of course I’m going to be interested in this.  I hope I am hearing this style from them in the next few years. These guys can do no wrong for me as they are currently one of my favourite bands.
Genres: Progressive Metal, Stoner Rock, Thrash, Progressive Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Country of origin: Australia
5. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - The Silver Cord
Tumblr media
A first for my lists. A band releasing 2 albums that both ended up in my top 10 of the years. When I heard that this album was going to be fully electronic, I was overly interested because they did do something similar on Butterfly 3000. But this album is nothing like the fun that that album was. In many ways this album is one of the most musically interesting and lyrical journeys these guys have ever travelled down. From beautiful synth odysseys, fun disco tracks, hardcore big beat moments that wouldn’t feel out of place in early The Chemical Brothers or The Prodigy to some of the most beautiful introspective moments I’ve heard these guys wander down.  This album is also oddly presented, as it has extended versions of each track. The album itself is fine as it is, but the extended editions do show us a more experimental side to these guys. (as if they aren’t experimental enough) As I say with each King Gizzard release, I hope that this isn’t just an experiment for these guys, because anytime that switch genres, they usually do better than bands in these contemporary fields.
Genres: Electronic, Progressive Electronic, Psychedelic Rock,  Big Beat, Disco, Krautrock, Electropop
Country of origin: Australia
4. Haken - Fauna
Tumblr media
There’s a part of me that really just wants to say “business as usual,” but that makes it sound like Haken don’t really swerve too much out of their comfort zone, and with each album these guys have made, it’s been an ever ending musical experience and journey. Constantly moving forward musically, technically and concept wise, these guys just again prove that there are on the best progressive metal bands going to today. Everyone brings their A game, and it contains the bands catchiest, most technical, most oddest and most diverse musical palette these guys have ever created. Quite possibly my favourite album from these guys. I am very much looking forward to anything these guys release in the future.
Genres: Progressive Metal, Djent, Progressive Rock, Eclectic Prog, Experimental Rock
Country of origin: England
3. I Am The Manic Whale - Bumper Book Of Mystery Stories
Tumblr media
A band I knew nothing about until my brother introduced them to me, and I’m very thankful that he did. There always seems to be such amazing underground prog bands that are coming out of nowhere these days. These guys are very much in the poppier vein of the prog sound, like a British Spock’s Beard, but there is also the childish nostalgic curiosity of Big Big Train, being a concept album being about storybook like stories the band came up with. Musically these guys are fantastic, with amazing musicianship and complex passages along with great catchy melodies. The band’s strongest force though is vocalist Michael Whiteman who puts on the disguise of an eccentric narrator throughout. Also I love concept albums that bring back themes throughout and this album is full of brilliant moments. I am very happy to have found these guys and look forward to what they will be bringing in the future.
Genres: Progressive Rock, Symphonic Prog, Eclectic Prog, Hard Rock, Pop Rock
Country of origin: England
2. Empire State Bastard - Rivers Of Heresy
Tumblr media
Being a fan of both Biffy Clyro & Oceansize, I was over the moon to hear that these guys are working together. I then heard that they were making an extreme metal album, and I was overly curious. While these guys have flirted with heavier sounds in their previous projects, it’s never been this abrasive and caustic. But it’s the insanity that makes this album what it is. Simon Neil’s vocals are the most manic I’ve even heard his contemporaries reach heights of. And thankfully these guys were able to get drumming legend Dave Lombardo to provide a perfect accompaniment to this insanity. Musically diverse, Mike Vennart shows of his multi genre bending talent as he showed on his stuff with Oceansize, but more manic than he’s ever been. I really hope this isn’t a flash in the pan or a one time thing. This is one of the best projects these guys have ever been part of and I’m really hoping to hear more from this project.
Genres: Extreme Metal, Post Hardcore, Grindcore, Art Rock, Experimental Rock, Stoner Metal
Country of origin - Scotland & England
Sleep Token - Take Me Back To Eden
Tumblr media
When these guys first burst on the scene, I actually missed their first album Sundowning, but from the singles I heard I did know there was something special in them. So when it came to the follow up This Place Will Become Your Tomb, they decided to tone down the metal and show a softer side, which if I’m being honest, left me wanting more. So on their 3rd album, the guys have decided to become heavier yet at times also softer than they’ve ever been. And this is the sound these guys needed to obtain. This is the sound that speaks to me the most and personally I feel is the most unique and forward thinking sound in modern metal today, which I hope will pave the way for future metal acts. From the introspective beauty to the incredible harsh, this album is an emotional rollercoaster. Musically tight throughout switching from genre to genre, the real highlight is Vessel’s vocals, as he is able to create a complete palette delivering his lyrics in an almost Shakespearean way. At times listening to this I have been close to tears (which was very cathartic after they year I had). I hope the mystery behind this project continues and that these guys revel in the success this masterpiece has given them. A high contender for album of the decade.
Genres: Progressive Metal, Post Metal, Art Rock, Djent, Pop, Electronic, R&B, Experimental Rock, Progressive Rock

The Top 10 Albums Of 2022
One of the hardest years for me. The quality of music released this year was a grace for the post Covid world. But I have been able to put together a pretty great list.
Also shoutout to the metal bands this year. This list is full of them and this has been a great year for that genre.
And as always, I didn’t hear every album this year, this is my person list and I counted anything released this year.
10. Wilderun – Epigone
Tumblr media
Don't you just love it when you find a band that came from nowhere and becomes one of your favorites. That's what happened with these guys. When it comes to metal, I always glide towards the more interesting side and these guys present one of the most colorful palettes when it comes to the genre. Mostly this band keeps it on the more quiet and soft side, leading to an epic build up where vocalist Evan Berry goes from crooning to growls from another dimension. Lyrically the band are also coming from some other dimension as if taking the listener on a journey through some wormhole which ends up leaving them emotionally floored and changed in someway. Art needs to be shown and put back into metal and thankfully these guys do this very well. Although I think this album is only a taste of what's to come.
Genres: Progressive Metal, Progressive Rock, Extreme Metal, Folk Metal, Symphonic Metal, Art Rock, Avant Garde Metal
Country of origin: USA
9. Soilwork – Övergivenheten
Tumblr media
Soilwork have been a band that I've enjoyed but never really loved. I always knew that there was a side to them that was unexplored and it seems that since David Andersson joined the band they have been spreading their wings into more uncharted territory (their previous album Verkligheten had moments of this which made me peak my interest) and this album is the culmination of 20 years of them finding their sound and this is the best thing they've ever created. Musically heavy, catchy, aggressive and beautiful, finally the band have actually took advantage of Sven Karlsson's keyboard work which was usually always in the background is finally in the foreground creating a rich palette of colors. Vocalist Speed has given the performance of his career fully showing of how much range he has and that he is one of the most underlooked and best in the business. Lyrically the album deals with a range of dark topics, which sadly came to life when guitarist David Andersson sadly passed away. Overall this is one of the best metal albums of the year and is the greatest album these guys have ever made.
RIP David Andersson
Genres: Melodic Death Metal, Extreme Metal, Folk Metal, Heavy Metal, Progressive Metal
Country of origin: Sweden
8. Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers
Tumblr media
Ever since Damn, people have been dying to hear Lamar's opinion on what has happened in the world since then. And then when he finally released this album...he had nothing to say. One of the biggest left turns I've seen culturaly, Lamar stripped it back and made an introspective look at himself, his faults, his flaws, what he's done wrong in his life and how it affected him and the people within his cultural sphere. This is not an easy listen lyrically, but it's something that had to be  sayed, and only a true genius like Lamar could have presented this so truthful and classy. I do prefer To Pimp A Butterfly, but this album is in a world of it's own. Musically quiet, not over flashy, nuanced and the perfect backing to his lyrics. His flow is un matchable and it just proves that he is possibly the greatest rapper of all time.
Genres: Conscious Hip Hop, Progressive Rap, R&B, Hip Hop, Rap
Country of origin: US
7. Ibaraki – Rashomon
Tumblr media
When it comes to Matt Heafy's musical output, it usually is interesting enough to like, brilliant or incredible cringe. But last year his band Trivium released In The Court Of The Dragon, which narrowly missed my end of year list. This project is something he has been teasing for a while and my first look at it was the track Ronin and I was blown away by the chorus where it had some of the greatest black metal rasps I've heard in a long time...and it turned out Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance was doing them. And the surprise of this song is very much why this album is so great, what sounds like it won't work does and it does at such a level you doubt any fears you previously had. Lyrically the album takes Heafy's interest in Japanese myths and presents them both beautifully and powerful. The guests he has on this album other than Way are obvious choices for this project, but having Ishahn & Nergal on the album are good collaborations rather than a forced badge of honor.
Genres: Extreme Metal, Black Metal, Progressive Metal, Oriental Metal, Metalcore
Country of origin: Japan & USA
6. Black Midi - Hellfire
Tumblr media
Only a band like Black Midi can release 2 albums back to back within a year where not only do they bring their A game but more. While I do prefer Cavalcade overall is still a progression from it and overal something entirely different. Musically bonkers, the band prove that they are some of the best talent out there. Lyrically absurd and at times very funny, there is a fine line between ridicule and genius that these guys successfully are able to obtain. Although I think we are only getting a glimpse of the potential these guys have because their genius seems to have no bounds.
Genres: Progressive Rock, Hipster, Jazz Fusion, Avant Garde, Experimental Rock, Post Punk, Hard Rock
Country of origin: England
5. Everything Everything - Raw Data Feel
Tumblr media
Big surprise these guys are on the list. 2 years ago one of the bands weaker albums made my list, so this shows you how much I love these guys, and the reason for it is because they are constantly doing something interesting. Musically poppier than their previous albums and more electronic than usual, it doesn't shy away from their talent. Lyrically odd, the album uses an AI to create some very odd lyrics and ideas. This could have been a disaster but it just proves these guys can do no wrong because these guys are one of if not the most interesting musical groups growing today. Can't wait to see them again in 2-3 years time on my list again. If not I'll eat my tin foil hat.
Genres: Art Rock, Indie Rock, Electronic, Pop, Hipster
Country of origin: England
4. D'Virgillio, Morse & Jennings – Troika
Tumblr media
A supergroup combined of artists who aren't strangers to my top 10 lists, but this time they're making soft pop music. I'm a massive fan of all the projects these guys are involved with and the list of albums, projects or bands they are all in would be a list longer than this one. But the reason this is here is due to the execution. Prog rock and metal guys making pop music could go horribly wrong, but this just proves how brilliant each invidual is as a songwriter in their own right. Also I love harmonies, and the 3 vocalists (with a lot of attention on D'Virgillio & Jennings) have such a beautiful union together. I really hope this isn't the last of this project and it's not just a one off.
Genres: Soft Rock, Pop Rock, Progressive Rock, Acoustic, Hard Rock
Country of origin: USA & England
3. Willow - <Copingmechanism>
Tumblr media
My list is never complete without a wild card. And my wild cards are usually odd, but never this odd. But that's because this is an experiment that never should have worked. It seems that the crossover from pop to rock may gain some attention but doesn't really artistically have much merit, take for example Machine Gun Kelly. But this is a different story. Being the daughter of one of the world's biggest actors, I was always interested in Willow's voice as she matured into a stand alone artist. While her mum's metal band was interesting enough but still kind of cringe, I never expected this foray to go well. So while her dad recovered from the outcome slap heard from across the world, Willow decided to go into a rock and metal world and it paid off...pretty fantastically may I said. I always love bands like Paramore and Marmozets and if one of them released this album it would be on their best. But the real highlight of the album is Willows voice. Not only is she a fantastic singer, but she goes into realms that you wouldn't expect the Whip My Hair girl to go into. If you want to completely avoid this for name alone, I would advise just to listen to any of the singles and I bet it will change your mind.
Genres: Pop Rock, Hard Rock, Post Hardcore, Alternative Rock, Alternative Metal
Country of origin: USA
2. Jamie Lenman – The Atheist
Tumblr media
He got album of the year for his last proper album so I was expecting big things as he is currently one of my favorite artists. With a title like The Atheist, I was expecting more snarl and fun...that's not the case. Most artists mature and this is one of those moments. Less screamy and more introspective, lyrically Lenman has matured into a brilliant lyricist that could match any singer songwriter. Musically more catchy and to the point, it's a lot less experimental than Devolver. Lenman also has really improved as a singer too, with a wide range of tones and moods offered throughout. While I do prefer the latter, this just proves that he is one of the best songwriters and solo artists in rock today.
Genres: Pop Rock, Hard Rock, Post Hardcore, Alternative Rock, Fist
Country of origin: England
1. Conjurer - Páthos
Tumblr media
Their previous album Mire was loved by friends of mine. While I did enjoy it, I knew this was only a taste of what was to come. I didn't expect the band to release their masterpiece so soon. But this album absolutely floored me. Incredibly powerful and crushing musically, mood wise the album can go from the sickest twisted evilest sound to something so beautiful. Vocalists Dan Nightingale & Brady Deeprose present an incredible palate; from the deepest of growls, the harshest of shrieks, the painful cleans to introspective spoken word. When it comes to the riffs, they are heavier than blue whales smashing into planets. This album is a piece of art that is utterly horrifying, awful yet so beautiful and powerful that it almost can bring you to tears. I think this may be one of the best metal albums if not in the past few years but possibly of all time. If you are a fan of metal in the more extreme way, I plead you to listen to this and see if you get the same reaction. It's very rare a band of the extreme metal persuasion get into my top positions, so you really have to impress me to get to this stage. And I am beyond impressed.
Genres: Extreme Metal, Post Hardcore, Death Metal, Doom, Progressive Metal, Post Metal, Sludge

The Top 10  Films Of 2022
Covid is mostly an afterthought now, which meant I could see more films thankfully. Thus making it harder to make my list this year, cause there was alot of great films.
So before I begin, this is my list and I am going by if it was released this year in cinemas, DVDs or streaming. I haven’t seen all films this year, but I would love your suggestions.
10. I Came By (Babak Anvari)
Tumblr media
A rather underlooked little gem of a film that I don't think got enough attention. His previous film Under The Shadows just barely made it off the list the year it came out and it just shows that Anvari is a great talent to still watch out for (although I still think his masterpiece is yet to come). The cast bring an excellent performance, with Hugh Bonneville being the proper standout as one of the most twisted villains I've seen in a while. Script wise it takes a few interesting twists and turns with some proper nail biting suspense throughout. Brutal at times too, it really doesn't play light with your emotions either.
9. Boiling Point (Philip Barantini)
Tumblr media
1 shot films aren't the easiest, and if pulled off well, they can really be affective. This film also resonated with me later as I have recently started working in a restaurant. Execution wise this is pulled off incredibly well and thankfully the cast really bring this story to life. Stephen Graham is in my opinion one of the greatest actors of all time, and this film just proves my point. Comically great and at times dark and cold, the film really is an emotional whirlwind. Also if you never have or have worked in a restaurant, watch it to see the horror or re live the trauma.
8. Titane (Julia Ducournau)
Tumblr media
Again, another director who's previous work barely made it off my previous lists, Ducournau has upped the game from her previous film Raw to bring us a sexually charged sci fi body horror with some interesting points to make about gender roles and grief. Creative as it is horrifying, the film itself is led forward by brilliant performances from Agathe Rousselle & Vincent Lindon. Any fan of Cronenberg would love this as it perfectly mixes the horror from Videodrome, the sexual side of Crash and the odd creativity of Naked Lunch. A film I most likely will never forget, so job well done.
7. Men (Alex Garland)
Tumblr media
Garland's films always barely make my top 10, but thankfully his best movie has been released this year and has finally fulfilled the promise he has always shown. An incredibly odd fable of misogny and trauma, the film lives in a world of it's own, and one I'd never want to visit. Some scenes of this film are incredibly creepy, with one in particular that may haunt my nightmares for years to come. The nuanced moments of this film are what really makes it, and cast wise the performances of Rory Kinnear & Jesse Buckley are spellbinding and incredibly gritty. The script is what really sold the film for me, with some fantastic choice of dialogue. Even with a very odd CGI possible error, it still doesn't distaste me from the film as a whole.
6. The Tinder Swindler (Felicity Morris)
Tumblr media
Netflix documentaries are a dime a dozen and I tend to skip a lot. But the description of this alone meant I had to watch it. And thankfully I did, because this was as nail biting as it was funny. Sometimes with these stories, you want to shake the fuck out of these morons who have been scammed, but Morris' in depth conversation with the victims makes you just want to hug and embrace them all. Also if the premise alone leaves a bad taste in your mouth, watch until the end to see one of the all time greatest comeuppances that may have ever existed. I badly want to go back to re watch this one, and I won't be deleting my Netflix account either just for gems like this.
5. 13 Lives (Ron Howard)
Tumblr media
I've always enjoyed Howard's output when I see them, but I don't think he's ever made a film that's completely wowed me...until now. Based on the real life story of the children trapped in Tham Luang cave which had the whole world praying for a good outcome, this films shows the in depth look at how the execution of such a task was at the time, almost impossible. The film itself was not an easy task with the technical side, acting wise Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell & Joel Edgerton prove that they are 3 of the greatest living actors we may ever have(I'll be discussing Farrell further in the list too). Nail biting, jaw dropping and brutally honest, this proves that a real life telling of an event does not need to hide the truth.
4. Belfast (Kenneth Branagh)
Tumblr media
Biased of course, being from Northern Ireland, of course I was going to love this for the sole reason  of it being a film made from and for here. Branagh's films haven't always have had me singing praise, but this is a proper passion project coming from an incredibly sincere passion and love for his home city. Performance wise Jamie Dornan has been forgiving for the 50 Shades stuff for giving his best performance I've seen from him so far. Finding a likable and sincere performance from a child actor isn't always the easiest, but Jude Hill  gives one of the funniest and honest performances I've seen a child actor give. But the real show stealer for me is Judy Dench, who gives her most powerful performance to date with such grace and nuance. It's full of laughs too in the script department and direction wise it shows Branagh to be better than previously thought.
3. Everything Everywhere All At Once (Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert)
Tumblr media
Swiss Army Man was a film that I feel should have went further into it's absurdities. Thankfully the Daniels have decided to up the budget, up the creativity and up the madness for one of the most insane action comedies I think I may have ever seen. Technical wise I do not know how they filmed this and even comprehending it is giving me vertigo. I am glad this was finally green lit because the world needed this film. While it's madness at times can over complicate it's premise, the cast make it bearable by holding your hand and laughing along with you. Also I'm so happy to see Ke Huy Quan come back to acting, because he is such an under-looked comic actor. All hail Jobu Tupaki!
2. The Banshees Of Inisherin (Martin McDonagh)
Tumblr media
McDonagh finally has presented us with his masterpiece and has proved that nuance can be as important as spectacle. The promise he showed with 3 Billboards Outside Of Ebbing, Missouri has finally been fulfilled as he has gone further into the dark comedy aspect of his work, reflecting the nuanced genius of his brother's work (getting Brendan Glesson was a great idea from his outstanding performance in Calvary). I said I would, and I will say it again: Colin Farrell is one of the best actors working today and his recent work including this film has proven this. This film easily passes the 6 laugh test and the twists and turns it makes goes into dark, philosophical and psychological areas that leaves the audience wordless by the end.
1. The Northman (Robert Eggers)
Tumblr media
I've said masterpiece quite a few times, and I think a masterpiece can only come from a body of work that constantly shows promise. The Witch & The Lighthouse are films I utterly adore but I always knew that this isn't Eggers even at his best. The pattern for this years film list is that a director shows their best work through nuance. But Eggers doesn't play by those rules and sometimes show that the complete opposite can bring out a directors the greatness of a directors work. This film is like Eggers literally put his hand into my brain and pulled out this (it was written by Sjón and stars Björk...of course I'll love this. The technical side of this film is out of this world, script wise this should be studied like Shakespeare is and acting wise everyone brings their A game (I have to mention that Alexander Skarsgård, Anna Taylor-Joy & Ethan Hawke are the scene stealers) and this film also proves my point that Nicole Kidman has never given a bad performance. This is the film I always came back to this year, talked about as much, recommenced and enjoyed overall. If this isn't in my decades list, I'll eat my Viking helmet.

The Top 10 Albums Of 2021
The pandemic really brought out everyone’s A game it seems. This probably was one of the hardest years in putting my top 10 together, with ones being taken out and put back in whenever I gave them a listen again. Also, it seems this is the year of the debut album, cause alot of new artists really impressed me right off the bat.
And as always, I didn’t hear every album this year, this is my person list and I counted anything released this year.
10.  Genghis Tron – Dream Weapon
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Metal, Experimental Rock, Electronic, Post Rock, Shoegaze, Post Hardcore
Country of origin: USA
These guys I have only heard in passing, but hearing that they had a new album intrigued me, and wow, these guys have grown up from their “Nintendocore” routes. A heavy wall of synths, both dreamy and retro, thick overlayed dreamy vocal passages providing an almost instrumental tone are held up with the best drumming I held all year from Nick Yacyshyn, who provides a hypnotic complex bone structure holding up some sort of mass gass of glitchy flesh. It's like if Jean-Michel Jarre was a punk. The journey this album takes you on is a highly euphoric and enjoyable experience.
9.  Spellling – The Turning Wheel
Tumblr media
Genres: Baroque Pop, Art Rock, Art Pop, Progressive Rock, Hipster
Country of origin: USA
Critic recommendations usually do get my attention, and I'm glad I got a whiff of her work, because this album is fantastic. If Kate Bush & Joanna Newsom had a baby and bottle fed it Pink Floyd, then you would get Spellling in the form she pulled on this album. The instrumental arrangements are either beautiful as hell or really left field,  but each time I hear these embellishments, I am just in awe at her songwriting craft. Her voice does take some getting used to, but it is unique enough to grab your attention. Although I really am not a fan of the artwork of this album. Looks like a mistake that should have been left on the shelf. Luckily the music is so damn good.
8.  Måneskin – Teatro D'Ira: Vol. 1
Tumblr media
Genres: Pop Rock, Hard Rock, Indie Rock, Pop, Glam Rock, Alternative Rock, Fist, Rap Rock
Country of origin: Italy
I usually use Eurovision as an excuse to drink. And oddly enough, these guys weren't even my favorite to win, but Zitti E Buoni made me want to check them out. And thankfully this album isn't just a greatest hit and some B sides, these songs actually are equally unique and kick ass in their own right. But this band is nothing without the snarling and cheeky performances that vocalist Damiano David pulls throughout the album, showing off a wide range of styles and proves he is one of the most energetic frontmen in today’s rock scene. Also this album is so easily digestable, it just makes you wanna re listen once it's over.
7.  Leprous – Aphelion
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Rock, Progressive Metal, Art Rock, Experimental Rock, Hard Rock
Country of origin: Norway
Pitfalls was an interesting listen, but I really did miss the rock and metal side of this band, and thankfully they mostly brought it back. Thankfully Leprous are now a band of 2 very fantastic styles, both loud and quiet. On this album they really have perfected their craft of making very epic build ups, with a lot of quirky instrumental choices. And Einar Solberg just keeps on getting better with every album and I will sing his praises to the day I die. He has one of the most distinctive and powerful voices in modern progressive music. I really hope these guys get bigger than they are, because they really are one of the best active bands currently on the planet.
6. Kojaque - Town’s Dead
Tumblr media
Genres: Hip Hop, Rap, Jazz Rap, Conscious Hip Hop, Trap, R&B
Country of origin: Ireland
In 2019 I went to see Lana Del Rey live in Malahide, and her opener was this guy...an Irish rapper. He did a good set, so I kept an eye on him, and was interested to know he was releasing a debut album, and this impressed the hell out of me. Obviously influenced by US rappers with his flow and style, this is a saving grace from the UK Grime scene (I could never get into it, I tried, but the odd Dizzee Rascal song I could jam too.) Lyrically it has a fantastic narrative throughout, with a lexicon longer than most rappers bank balances. Musically this album goes from oddly chosen electronic beats to incredibly smooth jazz and R&B passages with ease. Also the title track is one of the best tunes I've heard in a long time. Looks like there is a market for Irish rap after all.
5.  Squid – Bright Green Field
Tumblr media
Genres: Art Rock, Post-Punk, Experimental Rock, Noise Rock, Krautrock, Indie Rock, Hipster, Math Rock, Post Hardcore, Dance Punk
Country of origin: England
This got some critical praise, but I think for a debut album, these guys need a lot more attention, because this album is mindblowingly fantastic. Taking the upbeat nature of Talking Heads & LDC Soundsystem and feeding them through Robert Fripp's brain, this is musically complex, lyrically mad and fun as hell. Also, the absolute insane vocal performances of drummer/vocalist Ollie Judge give the album a real on edge feel at all times. If this is their debut, their future can only be bright...like a green field I guess.
4.  Lingua Ignota – Sinner Get Ready
Tumblr media
Genres: Experimental, Avante-Garde, Appalachian Music, Chamber, Gospel, Extreme Metal, Anti-Folk, Noise Rock
Country of origin: USA
I missed out on her last project Caligula, but what I did hear scared the hell out of me. So I decided to give this one a go, and this one is a real mixed bag. But in the best possible way. Musically going from some of the most beautiful and etheral arrangements and then bang crashing you with the gates of hell. And even when it's at it's most beautiful, lyrically this album is preaching the most warped and twisted version of religion that sadly is too common place in todays world. I also listened to this album before knowing it's tonal context, so it does make more sense but I really do hope that Lingua continues making art as a form of therapy, cause while it's amazing to listen to, I do really hope she's doing ok.
3. Rivers Of Nilhil - The Work
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Metal, Extreme Metal, Death Metal, Technical Death Metal, Deathcore, Progressive Rock, Experimental Rock, Avante-Garde Metal
Country of origin: USA
I am so glad these guys aren't just a gimmick, because the saxophone in extreme metal idea was all that metal new sites could talk about, because these guys are a fantastic band, and this album is their masterpiece. Also, to release this album and overshadow Between The Buried & Me is a real hill to conquer. In fact, I think these guys might overtake them with the  best Progressive Death Metal crown. The narrative of this album takes many interesting twists and turns, going from beautiful slow passages, to bone crushing riffs, harsh vocals that bark like the biggest dog to mad moments of noise and jazz. The styles these guys are able to conjure up at any moment make this one of the most interesting and impressive metal albums I have heard this year. But as you'll see, it's not the best.
2. King Woman - Celestial Blues
Tumblr media
Genres: Doom, Shoegaze, Post Metal, Dream Pop, Goth Metal, Alternative Rock
Country of origin: USA
Damn, USA really has brought us a lot of great music this year. And this is my favorite metal album of the year. The best way to describe this album is that it's like a vampire hypnotizing you right before it fucks you and drinks your blood. The soft and ethereal moments are there to lure you in before a powerful metal slam takes you back to earth. The vocal stylings of Kristina Esfandiari aren't usually my cup of tea, but on this album she is really able to create another world for this type of vocal to really accompany such beautiful and powerful moments throughout. Also Morning Star is probably one of my all time favorite songs now. I can't wait to see what these guys do next.
1. Black Midi - Cavalcade
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Rock, Art Rock, Noise Rock, Jazz Fusion, Hipster, Experimental Rock, Math Rock, Avant-Garde
Country of origin: England
I missed these guys first album but I was aware of the buzz. I really need to stop ignoring buzz, because these guys are probably my new favorite band. The opener John L is one of the most insane pieces of music I have heard. King Crimson isn't making music anymore, but who needs them when these guys will happily take the crown. Also, these guys are in their early 20s and are the most baby faced band I have ever seen. The fact they look like a boyband but play the most insane complex music is just another bonus to their odd comic way of looking at things. But most impressive is that there are soft moments on this which are incredibly beautiful too. Vocalist Georgdie Greep I think isn't aware of how much of a good singer he is and I really hope he realizes that on their next album, because there is an old soul hiding under his boyish looks. The future for these guys is something I want to watch in real time, because after listening to this album, I just want more.

The Top 10 Films Of 2021
Covid Part 2. Yea this year wasn’t as productive, and sadly lockdowns and crazy shit has made it so the films I saw this year was smaller in the amount I usually see, but what did I see was mostly quality, and the top 10 was pretty easy to pick out.
So before I begin, this is my list and I am going by if it was released this year in cinemas, DVDs or streaming. I haven’t seen all films this year, but I would love your suggestions.
10.  Sound Of Metal (Darius Marder)
Tumblr media
Thankfully we have a film that finally shows of Riz Ahmed's talent. Also it's a movie about a metal drummer, so bonus for me. His performance in this film is spectacular, but overall the cast is spellbinding with a fantastic nuanced performance from Paul Raci. Direction wise this film is successful in creating 2 worlds for both sound and audio, and the cinematography shows off its skills, by having the lack of sound as a narrative strength. Also it was a good narrative choice to have the band being some sort of avante garde death post metal 2 piece, a dumber film would have gone down a more generic path. In fact, the choices made make it a lot better than what could have been a Hollywood tearjearker schlock, thankfully it wasn't.
9.  Eternals (Chloé Zao)
Tumblr media
Yea, I rarely put superhero films on my lists, and critics really didn't like this one, so why is it on my list. Sometimes unperfect things just click with me. Narratively this movie is rather difficult, but comparing it to Zao's Oscar winning Nomadland that was also a movie with an irregular narrative, and thankfully Zao in my opinion is able to pull this off, with a few scrapes on the side. The cast did a great job at carrying a rather new and confusing type of movie for the MCU, and I think all the beats, while meandering where hit with enough precision for myself to enjoy. And in many ways, I respect that. Also, I really liked the lore and look of this film. Also maybe I'm just being a first time contrarian.
8. The Green Knight (David Lowery)
Tumblr media
Dev Patel's agent is brave man. I'm guessing he chooses his films by throwing by throwing knives at him or something. Luckily Dev is a good enough actor to carry something so uniqe. An Arthurian legend done with an artsy fantasy style, or as I like to call it “Game Of Thrones on acid.” The effects and sound design on this film are what really grabbed my attention. In many ways throughout the film, it's horror like aspects are the best parts. It's like if David Cronenberg directed Ridley Scott's Legend. Fantastic film and one I won't soon forget.
7.  Dune (Denis Villienueve)
Tumblr media
A book that was supposedly impossible to film, as it had near misses and a previous film that's patchy at best. But Villienueve has a magic touch to everything he does. The man made a good sequel to Blade Runner which isn't an easy accomplishment, but he did it. Now this film isn't perfect because it's source material is heavier than thick sandy cream, but what was done was done very well. The world he created is exactly what I expected it to be, and more so. Hans Zimmer's score is also well done too, with a lot of nice experimental touches. The ensemble cast was great too, with Timothée Chalamet's performance being a standout, showing he is a fantastic leading man for any casting director to hook in for another film.
6.  The Power Of The Dog (Jane Campion)
Tumblr media
A film that takes it time, but once you digest it it sticks in your psyche for a long period afterwards. The themes of machsimo and sensitivity woven throughout are fantastic and I think a psychiatrist would praise it for how well and nuanced it's able to present it's theme. Benedict Cumberbatch is the real draw for the film, but Kirsten Dunst & Kodi Smit-McPhee I find are the real heart and hidden dagger for this film. Campion's direction too is fantastic, almost Shakespearian in style. This is a hard one to swallow, but it really is impressive as hell.
5.  House Of Gucci (Ridley Scott)
Tumblr media
For years Scott has been wandering in the woods, but finally he's back with a vengeance, making his best work in 20 years. The cast decision and choices for direction were dodgey, but it somehow all came together. Lady Gaga & Adam Driver are fantastic in their leading roles, but supporting them, Al Pacino & Jeremy Irons are fantastic as usual. Jared Leto's performance is...questionable, but knowing where this film came from (the real life story behind it is mad), I thought he pulled it off (scenery does have a lot of teeth marks in it though). Direction wise, Scott created a great world, where I could feel the Italian heat, the Swiss snow and the gargantuan blood stained luxury of the fashion world.
4.  The Suicide Squad (James Gunn)
Tumblr media
Another superhero film? Let me explain. David Ayer's Suicide Squad is probably one of the worst films I have ever seen. No joke. And this being as good as it was is a triumph. The concept of this DC world is so enjoyable and for this to be as funny as good as it was was a real love letter to my heart. I've always loved Gunn's films and his directing chops are even better (that time in the wilderness did him good it seems). One of the best things about Gunn's films, is that even how absurd his films may be, there's heart in them. And how he got it in there we'll never know. Cast wise the actors made me laugh my ass off, and most of them aren't even comedic actors. Also it's great to see Margot Robbie back doing the role that she was pretty much born to play.
3.  The Mauritanian (Kevin Macdonald)
Tumblr media
Macdonald really is the king of making films that have the maddest scariest true stories. And this is no different. The story behind this is horrifying and Tahar Rahim really pulled off this performance to bring Slahi's story to life. Jodie Foster & Benedict Cumberbatch also give fantastic support throughout, but Macdonald's storytelling is the real attention grabber, with at times going into psychological and fever nightmares.
2.  The Last Duel (Ridley Scott)
Tumblr media
Not only is he back, but Scott has  released 2 films this year in my top 10. Gotta say I'm impressed. While the direction on this film is very well done, the screenplay for the highlight, with Matt Damon & Ben Affleck back writing and acting side by side together (a first since their Oscar win). Subject and context wise, the themes in this film, while set in 14th century France, are as poignant as ever in the MeToo era, showing many different horrifying sides to the same story. When I first saw the trailers for this, I was not interested at all, but the critical buzz perked my interest, and I'm glad it did, cause this film is fantastic. Also kudos, a director having 2 films in my top 10 list. And 2 very different films as well.
1.  Don't Look Up (Adam McKay)
Tumblr media
Finishing off his trilogy of crookedness (along with The Big Short & Vice), McKay is back to depress the hell out of us again. This film really doesn't hide what it's trying to say, but what it's trying to say in todays society is like Mugato in Zoolander (I feel like everyone is taking crazy pills). And in many ways this is McKay's clever way of getting away with it. Again, taking actors who aren't usually used to comedy rolls, Leonardo DiCaprio & Jennifer Lawrence pull of as usual fantastic performances. Very much if Idiocracy & Melancholia had a baby, which is great for me cause that's 2 movies that I love and admire. I really do hope McKay continues this path, because this postmodern style of directing is a lot better than his absurdist comedies.

The Top 10 Films Of 2020
While it was easier for musicians to put music out this year, sadly the film world came to a halt. Thankfully streaming services came to the rescue, but it is sad to see the cinemas being put on hold. Hopefully this changes.
So before I begin, this is my list and I am going by if it was released this year in cinemas, DVDs or streaming. I haven’t seen all films this year, but I would love your suggestions.
10. The Invisible Man (Leigh Whannell)
Tumblr media
It's funny that this came from the failed Universal universe. I was cautious with this one because I know how studio's can ruin a movie. I was so happy to see Leigh Whannell was behind this, as his most recent movie Upgrade was nearly in my top list the year it was released. And he thankfully saved this possible schlock into an incredibly enjoyable and well crafted film. Taking the original concept with a modern update it slowly morphs into a nail biting psychological thriller and horror. And cast wise this film is fantastic, with Elizabeth  Moss giving a fantastic performance. This movie surprises me a lot and I can't wait to watch it again.
9.  The Platform (Galder Gaztelu-Urritia)
Tumblr media
With the original premise, I was already hooked with this one. Design wise, this film is insane with its scope. You can smell the blood, shit and food waste as it's thrown on your screen. Story wise the film is fantastic. Some of the interpretations near the end are rather open ended, but the journey to it is worth the watch.
8.  Color Out Of Space (Richard Stanley)
Tumblr media
Nicholas Cage in a film based on a H.P Lovecraft novel. Fuck yea. Yes I know, the film's guilty pleasure sound is what attracted me to it, but this is a genuine creative spectacle. While Cage does his...well...he milks llamas in it, the story itself is enjoyable. But the real highlight of this movie comes from it's special effects and design. I am a sucker for 80's body horror, and this movie is a total love letter to the days of Cronenberg and Carpenter. Come for the Cage, stay for the gore.
7.  Knives Out (Rian Johnson)
Tumblr media
I do feel sorry for Rian Johnson. He went into the Star Wars world with a big bag of ideas, but no one wanted to listen to him. Now, I'm not going to say much about The Last Jedi without fear of getting stabbed, but he is a great filmmaker, and this only proves it. The screenplay he crafted on this is very intelligent, and his direction is very impressive. Cast wise he was able to get a great ensemble, with fantastic performances from Daniel Craig & Chris Evans. The watchability isn't as enjoyable as your first time, but it's still a very enjoyable film.
6.  The Personal History Of David Copperfield (Armando Iannucci)
Tumblr media
I have been a fan of Iannucci's comedies for years now, but his directing chops have never fully been shown. The Death Of Stalin showed his ability at using budget well, but this re telling of the Dicken's classic takes a well known story and adds so much color and imagination. Some scenes I thought we very Michel Gondry like but without being too much of an imitation. The ensemble cast too is perfect, with great performances from Dev Patel, Peter Capaldi, Hugh Laurie & Ben Whishaw. Dickens isn't usually my bag, but this movie had so much heart behind it, which is very surprising coming from Iannucci who usually takes the satirical approach, rather than the family friendly way.
5. Soul (Pete Docter)
Tumblr media
Pixar's secret and best west weapon is back. I definitely think the best way to describe Docter's style is that he's the western version of Hayao Miyazaki, but instead of verging into the magical and fanatical world, he creates fantastic re interpretations of philosophical constructs. And this time, the world he creates and the imagery used is so unique and enjoyable. And even just as a comedy, this easily passes the 6 laugh test. But this movie has such heart and character, and could be enjoyed easily by all ages. The fantastic voice cast also adds to it's character with a great lead performance from Jamie Foxx and the rest of the ensemble (my personal favorites being Graham Norton, Richard Ayoade & Rachael House).
4.  The Lighthouse (Brian Eggers)
Tumblr media
Egger's last film The Witch was another film that was so close off my list the year it came out. I was looking forward to this film so much, having always been a fan of Willem Dafoe's acting talents. And finding out he will be locked mostly in a room with Robert Pattinson only made me enjoy it more. The screenplay itself is very impressive, but the direction behind it is really what grabs my attention. The odd use of imagery and absolute insane performances from the 2 leads makes this a film not to be missed. In many ways this reminds me of when Lars Von Trier was a competent film maker, you know, before he went very far up his own arse. I will definitively be quoting some of this films' oddest lines and moments for years to come.
3.  Parasite (Bong Joon-hoo)
Tumblr media
Wow...the Oscar's got it right again. And it's a foreign film too. For years I have been flying the flag for Korean visionaries, and Joon-Hoo has always been at the top (usually always just behind Park Chan-Wook) of who I recommend. But finally, he has made his masterpiece. The screenplay is mostly flawless but the direction is the real key here. And I would recommend anyone who is interested in this movie to check out how it was made, because some of the production behind it all is debatbly genius or insane. Also a movie is nothing without it's cast, and all 10 of the main cast act against each other with such showman ship, it's almost as if Tarantino was playing them off each other.
2. The Nightingale (Jennifer Kent)
Tumblr media
A film to me, in order to really get my attention has to emotionally effect me. Jennifer Kent is a masterful filmmaker when it comes to this. While dealing with depression in her last horror masterpiece The Babadook, she now makes her mark with one of the most interesting revenge films ever made. Without going into too much detail, the plot and history of this tale is harrowing to say the least. Also image and performance wise, this movie will scar you in many ways. Aisling Franciosi's lead performance is incredibly captivating throughout, but a lot of attention also has to be given to Baykali Ganambarr and one of the most twisted villains on screen I have seen portrayed by Sam Claflin. I would advise caution before watching this because it is a lot, but it's worth the plunge.
1.  Jojo Rabbit (Taika Waititi)
Tumblr media
As I said previously, a movie has to really emotionally affect me to get my attention. When I first saw this movie, my own personal life wasn't the best, and while living in a rather hopeless world, this film was able to give me a little bit more hope in a world so consumed by hate. And I know there has been some controversy behind this due to it's subject material, but I have been a fan of Waititi's comedy for years now and one thing I know about him is that behind his goofy demeanor, one ability he has is to treat sensitive material with the the right amount of parody and heart. And his own cartoonish performance as a childish yet demanding Hitler is incredibly enjoyable but incredibly effective. Cast wise, the adults as always give their best, with amazing performances from Scarlet Johansson, Stephen Merchant & Sam Rockwell but the younger cast of Roman Griffin Davis & Thomasin McKenzie are the real heart and soul of this movie. Another time the Oscar’s got it right.

The Top 10 Albums Of 2020
This year was shiiiiiiiit. Fucking covid 19 interrupting everything. I am so glad this was a great year for music.
So in all, I didn’t hear much bad music this year. This was a great year for metal, so you will see alot of it in my top albums of this year.
And as always, I didn’t hear every album this year, this is my person list and I counted anything released this year.
10. Idles - Ultra Mono
Tumblr media
Genres: Punk, Noise Rock, Experimental Rock, Art Rock, Industrial Rock, Post Punk
Country of origin: England
Following up in my opinion one of the greatest albums ever made isn't an easy feat, but Idles have made a very interesting good attempt. Adding more experimental flare to their punk style with some of their most hard hitting riffs, it almost shadows the raging punk anthems throughout. Lyrically more angry and direct, this album is a leftist's wetdream. As an ensemble they are tighter than ever, and as always Joe Talbot's delivery is as unique and engaging as it can be. Following a masterpiece is hard, but this is an extremely good effort. So far, not a bad album has been made by this band and will more likely see my top 10′s each year.
9. Everything Everything - Re-animator
Tumblr media
Genres: Art Rock, Art Pop, Indie Rock, Experimental Rock, Electronic
Country of origin: England
Of course these guys are going to be in my top 10. Usually they top it, but this album is a bit of a step down from their 2 recent masterpieces, but like Idles, these guys are putting an interesting foot forward. Stepping more into their pop and electronic shoes on this one, the album creates some of the bands most interesting sing alongs and even adds a bit of funk into certain places. Lyrically this album isn't as direct, but the tone of the album definitely is pointing towards the floorboards rather than the ceiling. And as always, Jonathan Higgs' vocals are the most unique in music at the moment.
8. Myrkur - Folkensange
Tumblr media
Genres: Folk, Scaninavian Traditional
Country of origin: Denmark
Mykur grabbed my attention originally based on what it is. A one woman black metal project. Now her previous 2 efforts have increased with effort, but her previous album Mareridt showed more folk influence, and that mix really did intrigue me (this album was a hair away from the top 10 the year it was released). Now with this album is a completely different entity. Completely loosing the metal parts of her sound and just focusing on the folk elements really showed how much of a musical genius Amalie Brunn is. Compositionally this album has incredible moments of beauty and purity that I can only imagine exist on some sort of divine plane that we can only barely reach. This project just got a whole lot more interesting and the potential for the future is even more exciting.
7. Haken - Virus
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Metal, Progressive Rock, Djent
Country of origin – England
Haken have always been a hair away from my top 10s for most years. In many ways as a band they are getting better and better with each release. Virus is very much their most focused release. It is very chaotic still, but it there is a certain organised chaos that they haven't tapped into before. Also the best thing about their recent  releases is that they're short and to the point. Musically the band are always on point, with the most impressive playing coming by drummer Raymond Hearne (this man is a programmable machine). And while the musically is incredibly complex, it doesn't sound overly manufactured, which is also a bonus. It’s also weird that they called their recent album virus...you know...pandemic and all that jazz.
6. Ensiferum - Thalassic
Tumblr media
Genres: Folk Metal, Battle Metal, Power Metal, Viking Metal, Melodic Death Metal
Country of origin – Finland
Ensiferum are again another band who at times have been very close to my top 10's in the past but lost the list by a fraction. Folk metal to me only really interest me if the material is exceptional and there's something else to their sound. Now when it comes to the genre itself, they already are one of the best bands going, but now they've decided to add a new element to their sound, with new keyboardist and vocalist Pekka Montin who really adds a new diverse element to the band. Catchier chorus', more epic instrumental passages and Rob Halford power metal screams make this album a real standout to their discography and I hope this is a sound and element that these guys don't loose.
5. Avatar - Hunter Gatherer
Tumblr media
Genres: Power Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Progressive Metal, Alternative Metal, Extreme Metal
Country of origin – Sweden
I recently just got into these guys, and why it took me so long, I'll never know. Their last album Avatar Country was very enjoyable, but it was just a few hairs away from my list (seems to be a pattern this year). Now the band are back, heavier, screamier and more succinct than ever. Musically these guys are very agile while showing off to fit the music rather than the spectacle. The real focus of this band has to be vocalist Johannes Eckerström, moving from operatic tenor to very unique screams and growls. The blending of the 2 styles has never been done so successfully. Material wise, the band bring forth their most to point material, and lyrically having a lot to say without it overclouding the enjoyablity factor. Can't wait to see what these guys have to show us next.
4. Caligula’s Horse - Rise Radiant
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Metal, Progressive Rock, Art Rock
Country of origin – Australia
Getting into my list with their last album, In Contact was an amazing listen, even though I knew these guys had a lot more to prove to us. And this album is what I was expecting. A tightening of their talents and more focused material. The subtle blends of prog rock with the extra groove and bass, the band really are one of the groviest modern prog metal bands and have very beautiful arrangements at times too. But the biggest highlight of this band has to be vocalist Jim Grey, who I believe has provably the prettiest sounding voice in prog metal (if his voice was a man, I'd kiss it). Lyrically very poetic and beautiful, his delivery is like watching the best performance of Shakespeare's work put to music.
3. Pain Of Salvation - Panther
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Rock, Experimental Rock, Progressive Metal, Art Rock
Country of origin: Sweden & France
Of course my list isn't not going to include these guys. This album is a bit of a harder one to get into from their discography. Musically this is not just unique to the band, but to most music I've heard before. Toning down the distortion, the album still keeps its metal groove, but with more of a percussion kind of bite with very complex rhythms provided by Léo Margarit, giving his most dynamic performances. Lyrically the album is what did it for me, it being a concept album about someone with autism. Daniel Gildenlöw has always been one of the most thoughtful and intelligent lyricists in metal, and this album just proves it, proving these guys are way more than a one trick pony.
2. Enter Shikari - Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible
Tumblr media
Genres: Post Hardcore, Electronic, Art Rock, Pop Rock, Alternative Rock
Country of origin – England
Their previous album The Spark just didn't do it for me. While I did enjoy a lot of it and respected it deeply, this band is always the best when there is a bit of bite behind their sound. And this album has a lot of bite, but it's also their most pop focused album to date. The hooks on this album are incredibly ear wormy and will stick in your head for a long time. Musically the band are just improving, mixing the rock and electronic sound with complete ease as if these 2 rival genres should always mixed. Lyrically the album is just as biting, with Rou Reynold's painting an apocalyptic future that is more present than ever in the face of this pandemic and being thrust forward into this new normal. This album just begs the question...why is Imagine Dragons doing a cheap rip off of what these guys have been perfecting for years, yet receive a million times more attention?
1. The Ocean – Phanerzoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Metal, Post Metal, Progressive Rock, Sludge Metal, Experimental Rock, Post Hardcore
Country of origin – Germany & Switzerland
For some odd reason, this band has missed me the past few years. Maybe I needed to be more mature towards post and sludge metal, but I finally bit the bullet and listened to part 1 and 2 of this mammoth double album project. Part 1 should have been on my previous year list, but I only got around to listening to it this year, but it did prepare me for this new release, which easily over shadows the previous. Musically these guys are everything I'm looking for. Powerful, beautiful and sounding free with incredible attention to detail. Robin Staps songwriting and presentation is outstanding, while lyrically painting a biological history lesson which will soon reflect our own destructive natures. Vocalist Loïc Rossetti gives the performance of his career, showing off a wide range of dynamics, from throat curdling screams and bars while his clean voice shows off amazing character and emotion. Also, the album again has guest vocalist Jonas Renkse giving possibly the greatest collaboration in his entire career. And now I am so glad I found these guys. I can't wait to dig deep into their other and hopefully future discography.

The Top 10 Films Of The Decade (2010-2019)
This decade for film was fantastic. Blockbusters coming out from every corner, the superhero genre dominating the market with actual quality and directors pushing out their greatest work with a freer range of ability. There has been alot of stinkers too, but I think the quality outweighs the dirge, if not in quantity.
So here are some rules:
1. I may have changed my opinion from previous lists. Sometimes things stick…sometimes they don’t.
2. I didn’t see every film this decade. But I am open to recommendations.
3. This is all personal opinion. And my tastes are odd.
10. Nocturnal Animals (Tom Ford)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2016
While A Simple Man saw Tom Ford step into the film world as if he had been here for years, Nocturnal Animals saw him throw down the glove as one of the most stylistic and vibrant ones currently active. For a man to go from the fashion world into this is really something to be admired. But the best thing about his movies, as glitzy and glum as they look, the stories and how he presents the narrative is most impressive. He does not take the audience on easy ride, both with content and order, but the pay off is earned completely in this film. Also the cast he chose was spectacular, but the biggest props has to be given to Aaron Taylor Johnson who plays one the greatest villains I have ever seen in the past few years.
9. Sightseers (Ben Wheatley)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2012
What started off as a stage show got turned into one of the most memorable and funniest comedies to come out in the past few years. Now, Ben Wheatley's most recent filmography has been brilliant, but I think this is his underlooked masterpiece, as it takes his earlier style and accentuates Steve Oram & Alice Lowe's hilarious writing and acting. A movie not for the faint hearted, it really delves into really odd places to pull laughs. Also, Wheatley's odd cult and psychedelic obsession also bodes well to the really obtuse and odd tone of the film. I can still watch this and get a laugh.
8. Arrival (Denis Villeneuve)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2016
The biggest plead and cause for humanity to come together I have seen in a very long time. Denis Villeneuve's filmography has also been fantastic this decade, but overall this is his hidden masterpiece, as it's subtly is what makes it so powerful. Effects wise, the film looks spectacular and incredibly life like.  The cast do a fantastic job, but what really is the hook is the fantastic screenplay.
7. I Saw The Devil (Kim Jee-woon)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2010
When it comes to revenge movies, the Koreans are the best. Previously Park Chan-wook was the king of revenge films with the Revenge Trilogy being a prime example, but Kim Jee-woon has put his eyes on the crown with this mad dark twisted tale of a serial killer being hunted like game from the husband of one of his victims. Choi Min-sik does an amazing performance as a villain who does unspeakable crimes, but his torture is almost sympathetic, while the hero Lee Byung-hun has the hardest job of all, playing a hero doing the most unthinkable things in the spirit of revenge. Bloody, gory and constantly entertaining.
6. The Greasy Strangler (Jim Hoskings)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2016
This is on this list for all the wrong reasons. Unimaginably disgusting and asburdingly annoying, this film can't get out of my head. And after some of my friends saw it, we can's stop quoting it to each other, to the point where we can verbally speak most of the dialogue from scenes. Jim Hosking is a film-maker who is going to make really weird shit in the next few years. His sense of humour is so unique, its hypnotising. He's my rootie tootie disco cutie.
5. Calvary (John Michael McDonagh)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2014
After making a hilarious debut with The Guard, John Michael McDonagh surprised everyone with this dark comedy drama about a priest who has been threatened with murder from an anonymous source. But instead of it being a Guess Who, it's a character study of those closest to him. Brendan Gleeson's performance is fantastic, but the surprise of this film is the dramatic performances from Chris O'Dowd & Dylan Moran who usually are confined to comic roles. Not many people have seen this film, and I highly recommend this one for fans of fantastic screenplays.
4. Django Unchained (Quentin Tarantino)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2013
Tarantino before this had made his masterpieces, so this movie really was just an add on to a continuous streak. But one of the reasons its on this list is for the pure enjoyment from it. Now the subject matter behind it is very bleak, and it can almost be a distraction, but Tarantino approaches it with an honorable style. The screenplay itself is fantastic, but the real joy of the movie is watching Jamie Fox, Christoph Waltz & Leonardo DiCaprio battle for chewing the scenery. Any excuse to watch this movie is a good excuse.
3. The Wolf Of Wall Street (Leonardo DiCaprio)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2014
Speaking of Leonardo DiCaprio chewing the scenery, this film is pretty much nothing but that. Ok that's a lie, Jonah Hill and Margo Robbie are also battling for a piece too. But besides the fantastic acting, this film is highly entertaining to an almost pornographic level, full of sex, drugs and excess. But it comes with a price, and Scorcese in pure Goodfellas style has made the consequences dire and to a point, rather absurd. It's 3 hours, but once its over, you want to watch it again.
2. Polisse (Maïwenn)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2011
Who ever thought that blue haired alien from The Fifth Element would have made one of all time favourite films. Maïwenn's screenplay and directing in this is top notch, even to a point where she's an actor in the film, who is  a photographer and journalist, to witness the events what's going on and reporting back to the audience (now that's what I call meta). The emotions in this film are high, going from drama to comedy, which sounds odd when it comes to the subject matter, but it just shows what life is like whenever you have one of the world's most stressful and emotional jobs. The acting is fantastic, but the real star is JoeyStarr, who before this film was a rapper. Another example of taking someone from one art to another to get a perfect performance. Emotionally draining but a fantastic spectacle.
1. Tyrannosaur (Paddy Considine)
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2011
Wow, 2011 was one good year for film. I have always been a fan of Paddy Considine as an actor, and I was glad to know that he was going into directing (his previous writing in Dead Man's Shoes is fantastic). So what we got was a very very bleak film about a man dealing with depression and grief who finds friendship with a carefree Christian with a dark secret. The acting in this film is one for the record books. Peter Mullan and Eddie Marsden give fantastic performances, but Olivia Coleman steals the show with one of the most emotional performances I have ever seen on screen (she deserved that Oscar years before she got one, and I am very glad her acting talents are now being recognised). This is probably the best film ever made.

The Top 10 Albums Of The Decade (2010-2019)
I got requests to pull a decade list together, so this is my attempt. This wasn't as easy as I thought, as opinions do change, but I'd like to think this is the best. Also, it is a stark realization that I really love the modern British rock scene. Go figure.
So here are some rules:
1. I may have changed my opinion from previous lists. Sometimes things stick...sometimes they don’t.
2. I didn’t hear every album this decade. But I am open to recommendations.
3. This is all personal opinion. And my tastes are odd.
10. Enter Shikari - The Mindsweep
Tumblr media
Year Of Release: 2015
Genres: Post Hardcore, Electronica, Electronicore, Pop Rock, Experimental Rock, Alternative Rock, Mathcore
Country of origin: England
As I have said in the past, Enter Shikari are in my opinion a part of the best of the British rock scene at the moment. While their follow up The Spark did see the band experiment even further down the pop and electronic circles, this was very much the best of both worlds. This album very much holds everything great about this band. It's heavy, screamy, poppy and experimental enough. But the epicness of this album really is what grabs my attention. With the use of atmospheric strings and a production which makes the sound almost symphonic, it still makes the hairs on my neck stand to attention. Musically speaking it is the bands strongest effort, and definitely Rou Reynolds best vocal performances. While their debut is still a classic, this album is the bands masterpiece.
9. Black Peaks - Statues
Tumblr media
Year Of Release: 2016
Genres: Post Hardcore, Post Metal, Progressive Metal, Experimental Rock, Progressive Rock, Math Rock, Sludge Metal, Hard Rock
Country of origin: England
While their latest album All That Divides is a fantastic album, nothing will beat the staying and natural power of their debut. This band came out of nowhere, and I remember within the first few minutes of listening to the opening track, I knew this band was special. I remember the first time I had heard this album, I tested myself to see if I could find one track on it which I disliked. And there isn't one. This album is bone crushingly heavy and just complex enough to not hinder it from the material at large. But the biggest draw for attention is Will Gardner's vocals. I remember going to see this band live in Belfast not shortly after the release, and being just blown away by the power and determination of this band (Will at one point had to sit down from screaming so much). Definitely the best debut album from any band this decade.
8. Devin Townsend Project - Sky Blue
Tumblr media
Year Of Release: 2014
Genres: Progressive Metal, Progressive Rock, Hard Rock, Pop, Electronica, Post Metal, Experimental Metal, Alternative Metal, Art Rock
Country of origin: Canada
Looking back at the body of work Devin made around this time and later, this is definitly the album that stands out the most to myself. When it was released, it was more of a bonus disk which followed the newer Ziltoid project. But, surprisingly it contained his most focused and honest work. A personal concept album dealing with death and loss, Devin  put down the inward telescope, and held a hand with his audience, to know that he was there with them going through their loss (I'm not sure if he lost someone at the time himself, if he didn't, then this album is mostly a brilliant act of kindness). Also this is what I feel to be his poppiest release, and I love when he pushes forward the pop element of his sound. And as usual, the music and production is first class.
7. Everything Everything - A Fever Dream
Tumblr media
Year Of Release: 2017
Genres: Pop Rock, Pop, Art Rock, Electronic, Progressive Rock, Experimental Rock, Indie Pop
Country of origin: England
These album was prophetic at the time, but it still stings. But I am afraid the uncomfortable nature of this album is still lingering in our political and general atmospheres. The band did release an ep of songs after this which were good, but overall I think this album is the band's greatest pop achievement (they will appear again later on in this list). One of the criticisms thrown at this album at the time was the cleaner production, but I think it bodes well to the bands sound. One of the slight criticisms would be the lack of complexity, but overall I think the material outshines what the band used to be and I am looking forward to listening to whatever they have planned next.
6. Idles - Joy As An Act Of Resistance
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2018
Genres: Punk, Hardcore Punk, Experimental Rock, Noise Rock, Art Rock, Post Punk. Comedy
Country of origin: England
This album is just packed full of tunes. How could I not leave it out? Ok, it is a little bit more than that. The album itself is  one of the most positive messages out there to deal with the modern world we live in. And it's also really funny at times. This album is very much like a drug that I would recommend to get rid of sadness. But then there are sad and somber moments on it too. But then again, we all need a bit of sadness in our lives. Positive punk! What should be an oxymoron is now a cure for all ails. I really hope at some point I can see this band live, and I will be shouting along each word of this album back at the band.
5.Jamie Lenman - Devolver
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2017
Genres: Post Hardcore, Punk, Pop Rock, Pop, Indie Rock
Country of origin: England
Like the Idles album, this album is just a collection of brilliant tunes. But, with a twist. Now after having made this album, Jamie did release a covers album this year which was a nostalgic look at his past, but this album is also a nostalgic look at his past too and in my opinion is the greatest piece of work he has released. I still put this album on and I'm still blown away by the production. The guitar tone on this album is heavy as hell, and the riffs and songwriting on the project are all killer.  Jamie is another example of one of the best creative artists coming out of England. A  singer songwriter who is able to really rock and kick ass.
4. Everything Everything - Get To Heaven
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2015
Genres: Art Rock, Art Pop, Experimental Rock, Electronica, Indie Rock, Pop Rock, Pop, Progressive Rock, Math Rock
Country of origin: England
Yes. They are on the top 10 list. This band is just this good. Now, come on. Look at this cover. This is kick ass. But the cover itself is a bit of a distraction, because underneath the oddness of the opening visual, the album itself opens a dangerous and complicated world. A world that 4 years ago were living in, and now has become deformed. This album was able to get a top 40 UK hit while detailing the trail of an Islamist terrorist. I don't think any modern band have the balls or even the talent to pull this off. But luckily this album exists to dispel and exert this fears. Musically complex, raw at times and even a bit odd at times, this is the band's finest work, as it mixes the best parts of their pop and experimental sounds.
3. Justin Timberlake - The 20/20 Experience
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2013
Genres: Pop, Neo Soul, Soul, Symphonic Rock, R&B, Experimental Rock, Hip Hop
Country of origin: USA
Ok. Let me explain this one. I have always kind of had a soft sound for lil old Justin. But his albums always lacked I found. Or were too long. Or too overblown. And on this project, it is all the problems I just mentioned. This is the oddest pop album ever. Pretty much most songs on this album are close to or over the 8 minute mark, they go on weird experimental jams, at times the song is finished, and Justin is not ready to finish it like a child desperate for attention. But what he wants to tell the audience is so good, he just has to get it out there. And his presentation is just beautiful. Epic soaring strings, heartfelt lyrics, great beats and fantastic musicianship throughout. Justin has always been great at getting multi layered vocals (possibly from his boyband times) on tape and his range on this is superb. The joy that comes from this album is intoxicating. Also, when this album came out, I was put in the middle of a rather uncomfortable situation, and this album really got me through it all. Also, one of my all time favorite albums is Songs In The Key Of Life, and I feel this is a big tribute to that album.
2. David Bowie - Blackstar
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2016
Genres: Art Rock, Experimental Rock, Progressive Rock, Jazz, Post Rock, Adult Contemporary, Electronic, Art Pop
Country of origin – England
This one still hurts. The last masterpiece created by one the greatest artists that ever lived. And while it deals with dark subject matters and musically it is rather odd, there is a twisted sense of joy behind it all. As if Bowie knew this was the end and he wanted to make sure his audience was kept well looked after. But this album is still miles ahead of his modern contemporaries. I can't see any artist able to make something so experimental, but yet so accessible at the same time. This album emotionally connected to me because I heard it the day I found out he died. And instead of losing someone, it felt as if I was meeting them for the first time. In an eternal loop. And this is why this album has still stuck with me all these years. In his long and lustrous career it is his greatest work and it is the greatest swan song ever created.
1. Anathema - Weather Systems
Tumblr media
Year of release: 2012
Genres: Progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock, Pop Rock, Experimental Rock, New Prog, Art Rock
Country of origin: England
So here we have it. The best album of the decade. Now let me explain. When this album came out, I was dealing with the death of a family member and dealing with other challenges...and this album was the biggest help. This is one of those albums were it is so open ended, you can take it to mean whatever you imagine. Personally I think the album deals with death, but it could also be interpreted as a look into how people deal with personal changes. Musically this album is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. The raw emotion of Vince Cavanagh's vocals underlayed by the beauty of Lee Douglas' crooning, the orchestral back gushes forward and slams straight into your chest. They did follow this album with 2 great releases, and before this album they had 2 great releases, but personally I believe this to be the bands strongest work, and one of the greatest albums ever made.

The Top 10 Films Of 2019
Sadly my keep up with film this year wasn't as active as I would have liked it to have been. But I did see a lot of great films. Maybe none that will be in my century list, but there was some great moments throughout. Hopefully I can keep up better this year, but here is my opinion on what I did see
So here is some rules
1.Technically some of these movies have been released in 2018, but some where only released at film festivals or had overseas release. I usually go by the rules of if it was released in cinemas, Netflix or DVD in 2019.
2. This is a personal list. So some opinions are biased and selfish.
3. I haven’t seen every film from this year sadly. So any recommendations or even your top 10 lists would be helpful. I always want to watch more and I have an odd fetish for lists and stuff, so if you have any send me links and stuff.
10. Dragged Across Concrete (S. Craig Zahler)
Tumblr media
S. Craig Zahler's films in the past few years have only just keep getting better and better. Also how this guy was able to give careers back to Vince Vaughan & Mel Gibson is a feat if extraordinary skill too. Dragged Across Concrete is a complex story, with a lot of interesting twists and turns, but one of the best skills that Zahler has as a film maker is his ability to set up scenes. He never spoonfeeds his audience, and gives the characters dialogue and scenes that are very lifelike. While this may be his least bloodiest affair, it does have some rather upsetting moments in it which leave a bigger lasting impact than a bloody gore fest.
9. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (Quentin Tarantino)
Tumblr media
I was a tiny bit let down by Tarantino's last film The Hateful 8. Overall it wasn't the worst, but there was a lot of padding. But, this film has a lot of padding too. But it's padding which I deem necessary. In fact, this level of padding I haven't seen Tarantino do since Jackie Brown. But overall, the film, even though it is slightly based on true events, constantly has the audience guessing what is going to happen, leading to an incredibly leftfield and satisfying climax. The dialogue throughout is at times Tarantino by numbers, but at times he does verge away from what we are used to, which I've got to admit, is an impressive feat by Tarantino so late into his career. Also, big props to Leonardo DiCaprio who deserves an award for his performance in this film.
8.  Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened (Chris Smith)
Tumblr media
The movie which launched a thousand memes. Back in the day, documentaries used to fill my lists, but that has died down, because they've been so saturated since the rise of Netflix & Amazon. But, I'm glad to say that this  is the example of one that has slipped through the cracks, mainly because the story  of this documentary is so insane. A failed music festival that was doomed from day one, spearheaded by a rapper with a lot of hubris and a pied piper entrepreneur. In many ways this movie very much is the perfect parable of today's obsession with capitalism. It's all glitz with no results. Netflix, you've done it again.
7.  Lords Of Chaos (Jonas Åkerlund)
Tumblr media
Being a fan of metal, the story of this film has been among the metal lore for the past few years. Now...do I believe everything the movie is portraying...no, but the movie does claim that it is based on lies too. But at the heart of it all, I think  Åkerlund did get a great theme going. That at the end of the day, the guys involved in this whole affair were just kids. This is a controversial choice I know, but I genuinely loved the choice of shots in the movie, the aesthetics used and I thought out the dialogue throughout was very strong and acted well. So as a film, it's great. As a piece of metal history...not so much.
6. Fighting With My Family (Stephen Merchant)
Tumblr media
After being blown away by Florence Pugh in Lady Macbeth, I was surprised to hear that her next project was a comedy film about wrestling. But then I saw that Stephen Merchant was directing and writing it, and my mind was put to rest. Personally I think The Office & Extras are 2 of the best TV shows ever made, so I knew that Stephen could pull of a big Hollywood comedy. But...this has such great British charm in it, that whenever I wasn't laughing I was nearly in tears with the drama. The screen play in this film is fantastic, but Stephen has always been a brilliant writer. The cast in the film is fantastic, but Florence Pugh just blows everyone out of the water. I will talk about her more later.
5. Vice (Adam McKay)
Tumblr media
After being shocked by The Big Short, Adam McKay again proves that he has a certain style which was only veily shown in his earlier comedy films. The comedy of this film comes from the twist of what we usually except with films of this calibre, but behind the veneer of Cheney himself, this very much adds to the tone of the film. The obvious elephant in the room is Christian Bale's performance and the changes he made to become the character, which are insane as always, but the actual performance and manner of Cheney is perfectly modeled and may be one of his greatest performances, although I hope for his benefit he just sticks to a fat suit and make up next time he needs to play an older large man.  Now this movie isn't the most factually accurate from what I gather, but if it is...wow...McKay has given life to an absolute monster.
4. Midsommar (Ari Aster)
Tumblr media
Ari Aster has now made 2 of the best modern horror films. Hopefully he can make it a hat trick. This film blew me away. The psychedelic cult aspect of this movie was dripping from the screen, but it was done is such a bright and vibrant way so it seems to be safe, but it's actually very dangerous. A fantastic cast also drives  the film, but Florence Pugh shows up again to prove that she may be the greatest actor that we currently have working at the moment. Jack Reynor is also fantastic in the film and I really hope he gets more work because he is fantastic (he's gorgeous too). Warning to anyone about to watch this film...it gets very freaky.
3. Avengers Endgame (Anthony & Joe Russo)
Tumblr media
Ok...again this is mainly just for my own satisfaction. I have been following the Marvel films for a long time, and some of them have actually been able to get their way into my top 10 lists, but this one is different. This movie never would have worked if the studio didn't take their time. And the arc that they have told over the past few years with specific characters in general has come full circle, and the pay off is glorious. Now when it comes to the actual plot of the film and the time travel stuff...yes it is a bit silly, but the concept itself is silly too, so I take it with a pinch of salt, and I only focus on the story we are given. The best performance though comes from Robert Downey Jr., who I believe deserves some sort of award not for this film but for all the Marvel movies he took part in. The build up to Josh Brolin's Thanos is also a fantastic performance. And the climax of this film is one of the most grandiose and epic closers of any superhero movie that we have ever seen.
2. Us (Jordan Peele)
Tumblr media
I felt that Get Out was a movie where the concept was brilliant, but the actual execution was lacking. I still enjoyed it, but it was one of those films where people enjoyed it a lot more than I did. But when I saw the trailer for Us, I became very excited, because the trailer made it seem overly creepy to the point where I didn't understand what was going on. So I went in knowing nothing and coming out completely blown away. To think that Jordan Peele directed this, the same guy that made me laugh from his sketches on Key & Peele has directed an incredibly smart, funny and interesting horror film. I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone (obvious joke alert). But this movie would be nothing without the stellar performance from Luptia Nyong'o. This lady deserves a lot of awards and recognition for this role, and I hope she works with the horror genre again, because he is a fantastic scream queen.
1. The Favourite (Yorgos Lanthimos)
Tumblr media
Yorgos Lanthimos' films have been an interest of while. With his directorial debut Dogtooth, I was blown away. It was so unique that no one could follow this incredibly odd turgid and absurdist style. He then came back with The Lobster, which I found the idea of more enjoyable than that actual execution of the film itself. And he got closer with The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, but it didn't fully stick to landing. But this is his biggest film. A weird one to chose foe a style of his calibre. A period piece focusing on feminism. How could he keep his style without it distracting the audience too much with the story. But thankfully he found the perfect marriage between the 2. Now, his style did get watered down a bit, but thankfully his absurdist approach hasn't fully evaporated, with some very odd but brilliant use of shots. Acting wise, the film has a fantastic cast, and obvious props should be given to Olivia Coleman who won her Oscar for this role, but Emma Stone & Rachel Weisz also give fantastic performances too, and should be recognized too. I'm glad to see Lanthimos making his acclaimed masterpiece, and am looking forward to his next artistic endeavor.

The Top 10 Albums Of 2019
This year for music was spectacular. One of the better in a while. Usually I do a mini list of albums that were the worst that I don't release, but even the bad albums this year were just a bit bland or misguided (although this is from what I've heard, I know there is mountains of bad music out there). This year's top 10 is very much a list of artists who I have enjoyed or who was aware of who just completely laid out their A game. Some of these guys have been in my lists before and have barely scraped the top and this year they have just pushed their way in or completely floored me. Choosing this years list was hard as there are a lot of honorable mentions. You'll have to ask me which ones they are yourself.
Now before I go on I must explain that…
1. Yes, this is very biased, off course.
2. I haven’t listened to most great stuff which has came out this year. In fact, I have alot of CDs and stuff I still need to listen to, so this is of what I’ve heard so far. I really don’t have time to listen to alot of music and stuff at the moment.
3. All recommendations would be helpful for stuff that I should have listened to or reconsidered.
10. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Infest The Rats Nest
Tumblr media
Genres: Thrash, Progressive Rock, Progressive Metal, Stoner Metal
Country of origin: Australia
For some strange reason I have kept these guys off my radar for a long time. I do not know how or why. These guys literally are for me. A group of crazy Australians who change their genre willy nilly and have experimented with some of my favorite sounds. So this year I decided to buy their first album for this year Fishing For Fishies (not in this list, but an honorable mention), a glam rock psych folk freak out. And then for them to turn around and release a progressive thrash metal concept album about sci fi and the environment...it just confused and intrigued me. The production on this album is one of my favorite little quirks. With less focus on modern compression, there's a very retro late 70's sound added to the early 80's thrash metal vibe, and it works perfectly. I'm also really impressed at Stu Mackenzie's ability to adopt a gruff thrash timbre when comparing to the voice he uses for their lighter material. Lyrically they have also been able to add a great niche to the eco metal trend, being not afraid to be honest with a good sense of satire and imagination.
9. Devin Townsend - Empath
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Metal, Progressive Rock, Extreme Metal, Experimental Rock, Art Rock, Djent, Comedy
Country of origin: Canada
This proves how great this year is. Usually Devin gets a higher position, and while I have preferred his most recent material to this album, this is still an exceptional piece of work. Having disbanded the Devin Townsend Project, Devin decided to really take his sound and expand it to heights he hasn't been fully to achieve within the context of a band. With orchestras, choirs and harder compositions, Devin is the perfect example of an individual who under the stress of having too many big ideas, that he's able to create a piece of art and come out alive and well at the other end. Lyrically again we see Devin constantly seeking balance in the difficult world we live in, and as always Devin's approach to this is almost childlike, to the point where he even has a narrator reading out parts of what seems to be a children's story. Epic, grandiose, heavy, groovy and incredibly successful at pulling on the audience and the performers heartstrings.
8. Periphery - Periphery IV: Hail Stan
Tumblr media
Genres: Djent, Progressive Metal, Extreme Metal, Experimental Rock, Pop Rock
Country of origin: USA
For a few years Periphery have always been on my radar and I have enjoyed a lot of their music, but as an albums band they have never really blown me away (the closest they got was Juggernaut: Alpha). But they are back again with their heaviest and most powerful album to date. I remember reading an interview with one of their old producers who claimed that these guys are their own worst enemies because they are obsessed with following their own path without the help of others and I'm glad that on this album they have stuck to their guns from what they've been building on for the past few years because it has all finally paid off. Musically brilliant as always, the real shining moment has to be Spencer Sotelo's vocals and lyrics. The range this guy has, from cleans, screams and growls, it really covers the full gamut of a metal vocalist. I think if this career doesn't work, he definitely could be an easy replacement for Chester Bennington from Linkin Park. I'm glad to finally have these guys in my top 10 lists, proving that djent isn't just a meme and can produce some great art.
7. Billie Eilish - When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
Tumblr media
Genres: Pop, Art Pop, Experimental Rock, Electronic
Country of origin: USA
This was an artist I really didn't see to blow up as big as she did. Whenever she was originally presented to me, I thought she would be massive in the indie world with a potential for crossover. But wow, this really has been her year. I think the hype around this album is as true as it could get, but I'd like to think I get a little bit more our of her music as most people would. Being a big fan of artists like Björk & Imogen Heap, I thought this would be a lot more like a modern version of what they are doing, but she definitely will be the next big thing over the next few years. Production wise, this album is in a complete league of its own. In many ways its very quiet, but the quietness of it very much adds to a certain level of dangerous. In many ways you could say the effect of her music is a bit like an electronic version of Pixies. The song writing and lyrics on this album are fantastic and really are impressive as this whole album is very much just an experiment between 2 siblings. Billie's vocals too are also very unique. In many ways she is like a less dynamic Björk, where she has this childlike quietness, but unlike Björk, she has an added sinister undertone. Worth the hype and whatever she comes out with next will interest me.
6. Bring Me The Horizon - Amo
Tumblr media
Genres: Pop, Hard Rock, Art Pop, Post Hardcore, Electronic, Experimental Rock
Country of origin: England
3 years ago, these guys were able to slowly morph their way into a poppy sound, but keep the angst and metallic vibes they were presenting years previously. Now on this album, they have very much gone full force into the pop world. Now, in many ways this could be seen as a band selling out, but with Bring Me The Horizon it very much isn't, because the version of pop that they have decided to enter into, isn't very much a cash grab. Instead, the band have experimented with a murkier electronic tone and whenever the album moves into more radio friendly stuff, they are seen experimenting with indie electronic artist's like Grimes, beatboxer Rahzel and even Dani Filth from Cradle Of Filth. Bring Me The Horizon in my opinion now are part of what I believe to be a new level of artist (along with other artists like Enter Shikari or Jamie Lenman), where genre lables are unimportant, but sound is very much a focus. Lyrically also, the band deals with some some rather unpoppy subject matter, so I can't see these guys going down the Take That road just yet. In my opinion this is their greatest work, and I'm hopefully for whatever they decide to experiment with next.
5. The Claypool Lennon Delirium - South Of Reality
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Experimental Rock, Comedy, Art Rock
Country of origin: USA
I am so glad that this wasn't a one time thing. A few years ago, this album was also able to find a place in my top 10, and I'm glad that they're 2nd album is even better. Musically as always, Les Claypool's bass playing is out of this world, but Sean Lennon has to be one of the most underrated guitar players out there. While their first album was very much a very well crafted experiment, this album is a tiny bit maturer, with a great focus on the songwriting and clearer production. Lyrically the album is very much full of humor or odd stories, but overall they add to the psychedelic sound (Like Flea's though is a great piece of environmental satire). In many ways, choosing this album to be in my top list is mainly just to confirm bias, because the sound these guys make is very much just a box tick list of sounds I like.
4. Vampire Weekend - Father Of The Bride
Tumblr media
Genres: Pop, Indie Rock, Experimental Rock, Adult Contemporary, Hipster
Country of origin: USA
I have been a fan of these guys for a long time now, and while they've never made I've been unhappy with this, I do believe this album to be their masterpiece. The quirkiness of these guys is still very much an important part of their sound but the best quality of this album would have to be a bigger and better focus on the songwriting. At times this album is very much a bow down to the past, but at times the production can change to a more modern and experimental feel, with the added flourishes of vocoder and electronics. In many ways you could say that the band have successfully been able to make a millennial album for boomers. But jokes aside, the songwriting quality, the catchiness of the material and the surprisingly at times complex song structures and musicianship make this album and Vampire Weekend a band that sticks out in both the popular and indie sides of music.
3. Motorpsycho -The Crucible
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Heavy Prog, Hard Rock, Stoner Metal, Experimental Rock
Country of origin: Norway
Each year these guys make an album, they always just scrape the barrel to be left off my top 10. I always feel back about leaving these guys off, because these guys really are one of the best prog bands out there. The best way I can describe this album is that it's like a modern version of Yes' Close To The Edge...but in reverse. This time around, the band only have 3 tracks, with them all being within the 8-20 minute mark. But each one is very much a different mood or mindset, moving from epic suites, crushing riffs, beautiful crescendos and insane freak out sections. I also love how vocally imperfect the guys in this band can be. They sometimes tackle things outside their range, but it's done in a way which adds to the emotional impact of the music that they're making. In my opinion this is their masterpiece but it also keeps me excited for whatever project they next have in store for us.
2. Neal Morse - Jesus Christ: The Exorcist
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Rock, Hard Rock, Musical, Christian Rock
Country of origin: USA
I have been a Neal Morse fan for over 10 years now. Even after his exit from Spock's Beard, I have always followed his career, from his prog rock carefree to his Jesus loving aftermath. Now, to be honest, when I first heard about this project...I thought it was a joke. The title...come on...Jesus Christ and The Exorcist. But, it's not a joke at all. In fact it might be the greatest piece of work Neal has done. Apparently this project has been a few years in the works, and I'm glad that Neal has graced us with the release of the music itself. In many ways you could say that musically it is Neal by numbers, but it is a genuinely well crafted musical that I hope Broadway or the West End can snap up, because there is a wide audience for this (I'm not religious, but I can jam to this message). The voice cast he assembled for the recordings is great too, but the real fan boy moment was being able to get all 3 vocalists who have been in Spock's Beard, and in one song even to get them all to sing. The smile I still have stuck to my face from listening to this is not an easy one to get rid off.
1. Elbow - Giant Of All Sizes
Tumblr media
Genres: Pop Rock, Progressive Rock, Indie Rock, Experimental Rock
Country of origin: England
England have won again for creating an artist which takes the top spot of my favorite album of the year. Now Elbow have been on my lists before, but I definitely think they are band who is getting better and better, and this album only proves it, as I think this is very much their greatest work. While they're previous 2 releases saw the band experimenting with different sounds, this album in many ways is a mire grander and experimental album with a conceptual feel. One of the elements that has always drawn me to this band is how in tune they all are musicians, made especially focused on this album. Production wise it is pretty much clear and crisp, but there is the odd experiment heard throughout. One of the best elements of this album is that it is very epic in scope, but behind it there is a a raw heart to it, which very well bodes to the concept which I perceive to be a working class emotion to the chaotic times that we live in. Guy Garvey's vocals and projection of his lyrics are always one the strongest feats of the band (I don't think I've ever met anyone who could hate his voice). Elbow are very much a band that I could say are very much a modern Beatles, where they go deep into the pop stratosphere trying to make their music as perfect sounding, but never losing the quality of their songwriting. Also, the album cover is dope too.

The Top 10 Films Of 2018
This year was good for films. Not the best it has been, but still pretty damn great.
So here is some rules
1.Technically some of these movies have been released in 2017, but some where only released at film festivals or had overseas release. I usually go by the rules of if it was released in cinemas, Netflix or DVD in 2018.
2. This is a personal list. So some opinions are biased and selfish.
3. I haven’t seen every film from this year sadly. So any recommendations or even your top 10 lists would be helpful. I always want to watch more and I have an odd fetish for lists and stuff, so if you have any send me links and stuff.
This list may change in time…so this isn’t 100% final…but it’s pretty damn close.
10. Calibre (Matt Palmer)
Tumblr media
Netflix provides again. Yes, this may pass a lot of people by, but this movie is a harrowing experience. Imagine literally having to try and hide doing one of the worst possible accidents that could ever happen from the most dangerous and emotional people. Yes, not to ruin everything about the plot, but this movie is a real tension builder, with great performances throughout. The landscape of Northern Scotland also adds to the movie's atmosphere too.
9.  God's Own Country (Francis Lee)
Tumblr media
There's been a lot of great gay movies released this year, but I think this one has to be the most honest and emotionally driven. In fact this movie is so life like you can feel the sheep wool (it's set on a farm in Yorkshire). Great performances from the lead actors Josh O'Connor & Alec Secarean, they really express the struggles between homosexuality, masculinity and love. Basically, it's the movie Brokeback Mountain should have been.
8.  Incident In A Ghostland (Pascal Laugier)
Tumblr media
Laugier has had a hard time coming back after making the masterpiece Martyrs and getting this movie of the ground was a struggle (with some mad shit happening on set even). He is quite well known for trolling the audience, and yes he does it again, but with such masterful strokes. He intentionally makes the movie look poor...intentionally to then pull the covers over your face. Mad images and incredible horror throughout, I recommend this movie to anyone who likes their horror movies to be a lot smarter than they should.
7.  The Square (Ruben Östlund)
Tumblr media
I remember being in Paris and seeing posters for this movie in the underground station. There was this striking image of a topless guy in a fancy hotel dining hall. I was intrigued. And this movie is an intriguing watch. In many ways the movie really is pushing forward the idea of an art, and how far can we go to either not offend, offend or challenge the artists. In many ways it's also a dark comedy, with some incredibly obscene moments throughout. The movie though will leave you with certain scenes that will really stick with you for a long time. Claes Bang's performance throughout is also a marvel.
6.  Ghost Stories (Jeremy Dyson &  Andy Nyman)
Tumblr media
I couldn't be happier.  One of the geniuses of The League Of Gentleman, one of my all time favorite TV shows was making a horror movie, and its one of the best of the past 10 years. This movie really worried me throughout, but thankfully it is a rollercoaster which really does pay off well, and ties everything together masterfully. With a great ensemble cast and a screenplay that has genius written all over it, the movie's real factor is the careful direction throughout, which makes the scares throughout very chilling. My jaw was on the floor after this one.
5.  Hereditary (Ari Aster)
Tumblr media
For a debut film, this is shocking. Ari Aster's direction is one to wonder, with amazing attention to detail throughout. This is a very odd movie because in many ways it very much re writes the horror movie idea for this generation, as it's horror very much is a background to the drama throughout. The real highlight has to be the lead actor  Toni Collette's performance, who I hope gets a lot of aware recognition for this. There are certain moments throughout which are very shocking, and one in particular which will probably stick with me for the rest of my life. Chilling to the bone this one is. I highly recommend the experience this film offers.
4.  3 Billboards Outside Of Ebbing, Missouri  (Martin McDonagh)
Tumblr media
This movie won a lot of awards, and it deserved them. With a unique plot, this movie very much is a character study of how a small town deals with the most unspeakable of acts. In this political climate it very much is an amazing anthropological reflection of our current society, and thankfully there are certain messages of hope throughout. The acting in this movie is spellbinding, but the real highlights come from Francis McDormand & Sam Rockwell who pass the torch throughout to real captivate your attention. I'm glad to see McDonagh finally make in my opinion his masterpiece after showing  such promise with In Bruges. I don't think he's matched his brothers masterpiece (John Michael McDonagh's Calvary), but it's not too far off.
3.  Brigsby Bear (Dave McCary)
Tumblr media
This year's list is a weird one, because my top 3 has 2 movies that are just so odd and wonderful that I can't not include them. So this is the first one, and this one just had me in tears with laughter throughout. Now a good comedy is always good for me, but the real hook in this one is just how uniquely dark the plot is. In many ways this is the perfect example of how you can make something so tragic but really add a childlike innocence to it. And in many ways the screenplay in this really hits it home, because it's handed so masterfully and carefully, that you reall cannot dislike it. I have heard some criticisms advising that this is Sundance fodder, but I a really recommend giving this one a chance, because I thought this was a stroke of genius.
2.  Journeyman (Paddy Considine)
Tumblr media
After making his debut Tyrannosaur (which I still consider to be one of the greatest movies ever made) about 8 years ago, we did have a long time to wait for Paddy Considine's follow up. Now I do prefer Tyrannosaur, but this is no slouch either.  Incredibly captivating throughout, this movie really hit an emotional cord with me, and that really all comes down from Paddy's performance as the lead actor. As much as I respect him as a director, his acting in this really needs to earn him some awards this coming year, as I was  blown away by his performance. As with Paddy's previous work, this is not an easy watch, but it's highly fulfilling.
1. Sorry To Bother You (Boots Riley)
Tumblr media
This really is the year of the first timers as Boots Riley's first movie is my film of the year. After dealing with this idea as  a concept album and a semi musical for the past few years, Boot's Riley has put down the microphone and put his unique ideas on the screen, and they are some of the oddest yet highly comical things I've seen this year. In many ways this movie very much is the marriage between Michel Gondry, Spike Lee & Charlie Kauffman. Social commentary throughout is very smartly done, as it avoids the racism aspect and deals with the class system (as it rightly should). The twist in this one really surprised me, it really was the last thing I saw coming, and it was comic as it was odd. Riley's style while being comparative to other directors is very much in a world of his own, with some shots really blowing me away. Also this movie is a comedy, and really has some of the most absurd and unique laughs this year. This isn't everyone, but it very much is a movie perfectly suited for myself. ( I work in a call center, so this movie hit some personal chords)

The Top 10 Albums Of 2018
Ok...this year I have had a really hard choice to pick a top 10. This year has been too good, and most people really have brought their A game. This should be down as one of the best years for music in my opinion. A lot of albums just barely missed the mark, I really had to go with my heart here
Now before I go on I must explain that…
10. A Perfect Circle - Eat The Elephant
Tumblr media
Genres: Art Rock, Progressive Metal, Baroque Pop, Experimental Rock, Progressive Rock, Electronic
Country of origin: USA
This album may not be perfect, but it has enough in it which absolutely floored me. While not being the biggest fan of Maynard Keenan's previous projects (and the rest of A Perfect Circle's discography), this album really impressed me. The music on this is haunting, chilling and powerful without being overly aggressive. Incredibly delicate instrumentation at times is almost masterful in nature throughout the record. The real highlight though has to be the performance from Maynard himself. I have never been the highest praiser of his voice previously, but this album proved how diverse and passionate of a vocalist he is, while lyrically at times being incredibly masterful jumping from politics, human condition, technology and religion. I highly recommend you try this delicate piece of elephant meat.
9. Southern Empire - Civilisation
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Rock, Neo Prog, Progressive Metal, Power Metal, Fist
Country of origin: Australia
This is on here for pure self indulgence. I apologize. I have a massive soft spot for modern neo prog, and being a big fan of Unitopia I was glad to hear a return for certain members as their talents were wasted fading in the distance. This album is massively indulgent, with only 4 tracks with each being between just under 10 to close to 30 minutes in length, these suites really show off amazing song writing and musicianship. The vocals are the real highlight, with Danny Lopresto being the main attraction, going from power metal highs to incredibly delicate progressive beauty. Also the sing along chorus' throughout are enough to passionately sing to with a hairbrush in the bathroom mirror.
8. Yob - Our Raw Heart
Tumblr media
Genres: Doom, Sludge Metal, Stoner Rock, Progressive Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Country of origin: USA
The sludge and doom genre's have a complicated relationship with myself. At times I can enjoy this sound but in an album context I find myself getting a bit bored. I have strived to find a passionate doomy sludge album and have been surprised in the past, but I have finally found the masterpiece of the genre. Yob's sound on this album is pristine and powerful, with chugging force and drones throughout and Mike Scheidt's heart wrenching Ozzy sounding crones adding another texture to the tapestry with powerful growls too. The lyrics on this album are the real heart grabber, as it deals with Mike's brief brush with death after contracting a serious illness in previous years. Very rarely can a metal album bring me to tears, but this is one exception.
7. Denzel Curry - Ta13oo
Tumblr media
Genres: Hip Hop, Rap, R&B, Trap, Soundcloud Rap, Experimental Rap
Country of origin: USA
The rap genre has gotten very stale over the past few years, with multicolored goblins, thugs and lean addicted cretins covering the popular music scene with little talent to show and in my opinion a slap in the face of a once powerful art form. But I'm always surprised, and thankfully Denzel Curry is the exception, Being younger than myself, it's good to see a rap artist for my generation, referencing nostalgic images from my past yet being faithful to the ancestors of the genre itself. From moments that reminisce of OutKast's Stankonia to lyrical flow that would topple Eminem, the album may not be consistent in its concept or content, but when he cracks a joke...you laugh, when he makes a point...you listen and when he sparks emotions...you cry,  Also most of the hooks on this are earwormingly crafted.
6. Christine & The Queen’s - Chris
Tumblr media
Genres: Synth Pop, Art Pop, Pop, New Jack Swing, Art Rock, Pop-Funk, R&B, Disco
Country of origin: France
I had tickets to see her for Dublin this year but sadly she cancelled due to illness. Sadly that I never got to see her, but I am glad she brought us this masterpiece this year. While her first album very much was a foot in the door, this is a boot to the face of the mainstream music world. Trading her feminine traits for a masculine skin, Chris really is a queer woman's exploration into herself, with moments of sexual tinged misogyny, prostitution, self facing and actual physical abuse, it really paints a picture of an artist who wears her insecurities proudly and uses them to make her art shine. Also as a pop album, the hooks and instrumentation on this is fantastic, harkening back to Michael Jackson's glory days and even Genesis' 80's material. And on the artier tracks, this wouldn't be foreign ground for Steven Wilson's 90's output. Also I highly recommend the special edition, as both language versions are great. It's a pick on mix option for the Spotify crowd too.
5. Orphaned Land - Unsung Prophet’s & Dead Messiahs
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Metal, Oriental Metal, Symphonic Metal, Progressive Rock, Melodic Death Metal
Country of origin: Isreal
Orphaned Land are a band that musically I have never really been too interested in, but I do highly respect their message. Coming from Isreal, they are very much promoting a message of unity in a world that finds it hard to swallow a message of peace. They have dwelled on this issue before, but I think this is the album where they really hit home the message. A concept album dealing with how we as a people deal with faith and our desperation for a messiah, Kobi Fahri's lyrics are masterful at storytelling, really dwelling on the emotional levels of his chosen story. Musically the album itself can be powerful, bombastic, beautiful, rocking and soft as a feather. But the real highlight has to be the diverseness of Kobi's vocals, ranging from beautiful chanting to harsher growls. If you wanted to see an Epica album done more masterfully, critically and having a wider emotional depth, I highly recommend this album to any metal or prog fan.
4. Death Grips - Year Of The Snitch
Tumblr media
Genres: Experimental Hip Hop, Hardcore Punk, Avant-garde, Electronic, Hip Hop, Experimental Rock, IDM, Hipster
Country of origin: USA
Each year these guys are so close from being in my top 10. These guys have never made a bad album, it's just they're always snuffed out. But this year they have released their magnum opus. While I have always loved their meld of styles, I always felt they never were able to make a perfect balance between being accessible and experimental, but on this mad bag they have really honed in on their hooks, their craziness and the passion pushing forward. MC Ride's vocals have never been more insane and passionate, and as always his lyrics are a cryptic crossword of insanity. Musically the band have started to experiment with jazz too, but in the oddest but most fascinating way possible, resulting in a very unique sound which I hope they experiment more with in the future. I really hope they don't troll everyone again and 'break up,' especially with quality like this.
3. Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy
Tumblr media
Genres: Indie Rock, Hipster, Experimental Rock, Punk, Progressive Rock, Pop Rock
Country of origin: USA
I have always heard of these guys but never dwelled too deep into their past work. I liked the idea of an indie band making long ass songs, so I jumped at the chance to see this new project which is actually a re recording of their original Bandcamp album from back in the day, which hardcore fans have described as the band's magnum opus...and yea, it is a masterpiece. This album may be the greatest LGBT young teen movie that has never made. Will Toledo's lyrics throughout this album are incredibly youthful yet mature, almost like a young spotty Elvis Costello, but you know...the gay version of him. Musically the band blend together an odd mixture of indie, rock, pop, punk and...prog and art rock. Lengthy compositions and amazing production really put you in front of the train tracks, in the dance clubs and lying on Will's bed experiencing a depressing case of vertigo. This album really is a light in the dark of the rather turgid world of indie rock.
2. Anna Von Hausswolf - Dead Magic
Tumblr media
Genres: Art Rock, Experimental Rock, Drone, Baroque Pop, Progressive Rock
Country of origin: Sweden
Imagine the genius love-child of Mike Oldfield, Nick Cave, Tori Amos & Michael Gira, but with even more talent. Yes, big comparisons for a big talent. This album houses mammoth tracks, which either grab you by their length or the emotional spectrum that Anna is able to force on the listener. Her voice is magnificent, at times being as delicate as a flower then morphing into a forceful evil witch. Her talent as a keyboardist too can't be beat either, creating sounds and textures that would make any prog veteran from the 70's hang their capes in defeat. Lyrically sparse, it's not about what she says, it's really about how she says it, with every syllable grabbing you by the throat. I am so glad to have discovered this hidden gem and she deserves all the praise she is currently getting. Thankfully we now have a villain in the world of female singer songwriters.
1. Idles - Joy As An Act Of Resistance
Tumblr media
Genres: Punk, Hardcore Punk, Experimental Rock, Noise Rock, Art Rock, Post Punk
Country of origin: England
Positive punk. Who thought we would ever get to experience this odd yet wonderful mix of styles. After missing their first album, I finally got to experience their critically acclaimed follow up. And yes this album deserves a lot of attention. If you don't agree with their politics or message you can't falter these guys' talent, passion and song writing. On this album you will laugh, cry and hug it out with your worst enemy. While instrumentally these guys are battling each other in Fight Club scenario, vocalist Joe Talbot is stealing the spotlight with his incredible exuberant, loveable thuggish attitude. Sing along chorus' and great sentiments, these guys are definitely the one's to watch for the next few years. They put punk back on the map and thankfuly it seems it's going nowhere. (My last year album of the year was an English punk act too).

The Top 10 Films Of 2017
Ok, I said this year was great for albums...it was probably even great for films. I mean it, some of the worst weren’t even that bad (some where worse than ever but I usually don’t do worst lists, ask me personally for that). But there was some amazing movies to choose from this year, but sadly I can only pick 10 for this list.
So here is some rules
1.Technically some of these movies have been released in 2016, but some where only released at film festivals or had overseas released. I usually go by the rules of if it was released in Cinemas in 2017 or on DVD
10. The Handmaiden (Park Chan-wook)
Tumblr media
Korean cinema this year was actually amazing, with some real great movies coming from the far east. But as always, the top title has to go to the king of Korean revenge Park Chan-wook (who is one of my all time favourite film makers. Set in Japanese occupied South Korea, this movie tells the tale of a handmaiden who is brought into a world of deceipt, greed, sex and madness. As always Park Chan-wook tells this tell with some amazing cinematic techniques and with some mad imagery. Also this movie is also probably the strongest LGBT themed movie of the year too (if you watch it you will know what I mean). The king has returned!
9. Lady Macbeth (William Oldroyd)
Tumblr media
Period dramas usually bore me to death. But I heard Northern English accents in this one, so my intrigue was heightened. A definite master work this movie is, with some amazing shot scenes and wonderful acting, but the real highlight has to do with the main themes raised. A psuedo horror movie, dealing with a woman's slow hatred of men that she slowly becomes a monster, this movie slowly goes from one shocking moment to the other. Oldroyd's amazing directing really adds to this tone with the smallest details being highlighted to create a real tapestry of drama, intrigue and evil. Major props have to be given Florence Pugh and Cosmo Jarvis for giving some amazing performances throughout.
8. Get Me Roger Stone (Dylan Bank, Daniel DiMauro & Morgan Pehme)
Tumblr media
This is a brilliantly made documentary about one of the most controversial figures of American politics, a definite bogeyman if there ever was one. While most people fight and shout over politic issues, there is always a master manipulator in the background for his own personal gain or just for the fun of it, and Roger Stone is definitely one of those characters, who is so dishonest and slimy that you almost have to respect his own evil twisted genius and odd take on the world around him. Brilliantly told and brilliantly seen through the eyes of Mr Stone himself, it is a definite watch for those who need to see the other half live and how they work behind the shadows.
7. Paddington 2 (Paul King)
Tumblr media
Paul King is definitely one of the most underrated directors working today (he's the next Michel Gondry). Loving the original Paddington haven't been aware of the character since I was a child, I am so glad that Paul King has his hands on this property, because I can't think of any other director who has such great charm, talent or design. Certain technical scenes in this movie are way better than anything Wes Anderson could ever play out. As a comedy, especially a kids movie, this movie really is a laugh a minute rollercoaster. My mouth hurt from smiling too much. Ben Whishaw takes the main role so well as usual, but the best addition to this movie is Hugh Grant who plays the madder than life villain.
6. Accidental Courtesy: Daryl Davis, Race & America (Matthew Ornstein)
Tumblr media
This documentary is just a mad one, but it is the story we all need. Daryl Davis is a famous activist who is famous for de robing Klan members in some very controversial yet practical methods. Politically, the race issues in USA at the moment really are a minefield and taking a side really can be suicide at times, but thankfully a man comes along who I can at least side with in a more philosophical and pacifistic manner. Brilliantly told through the words and eyes of Daryl, the documentary really shows how love can conquer all. It may not take immediate effects, but at least it's the most, dare I say it, Christian way to deal with issues from a mostly Christian country.
5. It (Andrés Muschietti)
Tumblr media
It really is a horror staple, being a main influence on many peoples fear of clowns. While the first celluloid adaptation (the original mini series) is a guilty pleasure to horror fans, it really was a platform to show off the brilliant talents of Tim Curry, many believed would never be bettered. Enter Bill Skarsgård who has approached the role in a very unique and creepy fashion. While being a real treat for this movie with his outstanding performance, more props has to be given to the kid actors in this movie, who may be the best young ensemble I've seen in a blockbuster movie, turning this original mad horror movie to a heart-warming childhood tale with a good few laughs thrown in too. Don't fret, this movie still will have horror movie fans gushing with some really impressive scares and effects. This movie really touched me and I am looking forward to the upcoming sequel.
4. Prevenge (Alice Lowe)
Tumblr media
Being a fan of her casual work in British comedies and loving her acting and screenwriting talent in Sightseers I was of course looking forward to her directorial debut, with a concept as mad as herself (she was pregnant while making this movie...this is gonna produce some awkward conversations to her child). Telling the tale of a mother who becomes a serial killer under the guise of her unborn baby, this movie had B movie schlock written all over it, but being a talented screenwriter, Lowe really fashions an interesting study into mental health, dealing with grief, auto and postal depression. With every line of dialogue being as important as the next, this movie is a great re watch, piecing together the many brilliant fabrics she has woven throughout. Also behind the psuedo drama there is also hilarious comedy movie underneath this madcap rollercoaster. I look forward to anything Mrs Lowe will produce in the future.
3. Moonlight (Barry Jenkins)
Tumblr media
Finally. The Oscars got it right (...almost). If you have only heard about this movie through the controversial fuck up at the Oscars, I advise you to ignore it and focus on the genius of this celluloid masterpiece. Also I would also try and ignore the click bait nature of seeing a movie about a gay black guy, this movie is so much more. Split into 3 chapters, the movies sees the life of a young boy who goes through turmoil, both personally, mentally and sexually. In many ways I see the movie as a tale of someone approaching masculinity, but adopting an almost Freudian approach (each chapter representing id, ego and super ego). Masterfully shot, shockingly portrayed and hauntingly beautiful, Barry Jenkins really shines as both a technical director and a brilliant visual storyteller.
2. Toni Erdmann (Maren Ade)
Tumblr media
A very odd movie with a very odd sense of humour. If you are a fan of cringe comedy, this is definitely a worthy one to watch. Equal part uncomfortable yet equal part hilariousity, this movie has it all. Also oddly enough this movie is near 3 hours long, but only feels about an hour and a half, and has you begging for more. This movie also has a lot of heart too. Behind the nudity, wigs, hairy bodysuits and cum covered cakes, this movie deals with family, distance and how we all grow apart and become different people. Sandra Hüller and Peter Simonischek lead this movie with amazing talent having me on the brink of tears one moment, crying with laughter the next and now and then covering my face into my hands with some awkward yet hilarious scenes. Fans of British comedy would definitely get a kick out of this.
1. Mother! (Darren Aronofsky)
Tumblr media
I have been a fan of Aronosky's movie's for a few years and I have always marvelled at his interesting methods of telling stories, dealing with images and themes more than a concise and cohesive narrative and I was approaching this movie with caution due to it's mad campaign before release. I went in knowing nothing and I came out knowing only slightly more. I love how deep this movie is. You can watch it 100 times and still not fully pick up on all it's nuances or themes. Multiple people can watch this movie and come away with many different interpretations. A good director shows and doesn't tells, and Aronofsky proves that in this movie. Using well crafted techniques and a lot of shocking scenes (mixing graphic and emotional material), Aronofsky creates a magnificent piece of art with a potent and intelligent critique on religion, humanity, environmentalism and philosophy. Carried by griping performances from Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, this movie is a masterpiece and fully plants Aronfsky's flag as one of the world's most controversial and talented filmmakers.

The Top 10 Albums Of 2017
Oh my god. This year was too good (I predicted this last year). Picking albums for this year was not an easy task. Mostly everyone was bringing their best. Even the worst albums had some good on them either. Probably the best year for music in the last 10 years. But I have to make a decision on this stuff, and these are my personal favorites from this year.
10. Caligula’s Horse - In Contact
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Metal, Progressive Rock, Art Rock, Djent
Country of origin: Australia
This album was a grower. Usually when it comes to modern prog metal, I usually go for the more eclectic side these days. But luckily bands like Haken and Circus Maximus have kept me interested. This band I let pass me by. Whenever I first heard it, I thought it was a Haken rip off. But I must have been grumpy that day because  after further listening this album really impressed and moved me. Taking a more melodic and arty approach to the genre, the musician ship and arrangements are absolutely gorgeous. Also Jim Grey's beautiful vocals and passionate lyrics really do paint a viVid picture (very much like the pretty picture in the artwork). Also don't be fooled. When this album rocks, it really does rock
9. Kesha - Rainbow
Tumblr media
Genres: Pop, Pop Rock, Country, Folk Rock, Psychedelic Pop
Country of origin: USA
As usual every year, there's a pop album in here. But this one is different, because I actually have never been a fan of Kesha. In fact I found her music usually rather annoying (with the odd guilty pleasure), but I was shocked to hear that Kesha is actually a genius who was aware of how the pop formula worked and benefited from that. So after doing this, she sadly got badly stung by the horrors of the machine was manipulating (if you don't know the back story behind this album, I suggest looking it up. It's disturbingly interesting and painstakingly sad). So now she's back with a bite, as she decided to keep her real interests bottled up after being dicked about by the industry. And it's great to see them come out full force on this album, as she tackles any genre she comes into contact with a strange professionalism, making it sound like she's a veteran country and rock star. Also luckily her talent for writing a hook hasn't dwindled, as this album is packed to the brim with them. Also, who knew she could sing so well too. Good job, Kesha. I hope you continue down this path in the future.
8. Free Salamander Exhibit - Undestroyed
Tumblr media
Genres: RIO, Avant-garde, Progressive Metal, Progressive Rock, Extreme Metal, Thrash
Country of origin: USA
One of my all time favourite bands is back. Kind of. After the break up on Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, I was thrilled to hear that 4 of the original members have a new project, and it's gone into a more metal direction. Without the genius input of Carla Kihlstedt I did go into this album with small kid gloves, but I was not let down. Taking the sound they created previously and expanding it with a heavier approach, the band really have created a magnum opus full of amazing musician ship, humour and some really beautiful highlights. As always, frontman Nils Frykdahl's voice really is one of most talented vocalists and guitar players you may never but should here. Going from operatic falsettos to a mad growl at the drop of a hat  and the rest of the band don't disappoint either, with all of them bringing their a game. I hope these guys continue long enough to make a follow up.
7. The Magnetic Fields - 50 Song Memoir
Tumblr media
Genres: Baroque Pop, Pop, Folk Rock, New Wave, Electronic, Avant-garde, Experimental Rock, Comedy
Country of origin: USA
A 50 song album really is something only certain people can pull off. And if Steven Merrit can do a 69 song album, 50 songs should be a cake walk. Although the biggest challenge for himself is that each of these one songs is reflecting a year of his life. How does one person do this and make each song a good song? When I bough this album, I really didn't know what I was expecting. The price alone shocked me. But I bit my lip and remembered that Steven Merrit is a songwriting genius. And this album proves it. Seriously, if I was to randomly pick one song from this album out of random, I could easily hum or sing along to it. Now that it is an achievement that should be celebrated. Packed full of whit, humour, sadness, happiness and obscenities, this album sees a man grow older, maturer and drunker, and takes the audience along like a father telling funny stories from an armchair. In fact this album very much is the parent album to 2 other albums on this list with 2 other singer songwriters bettering and improving upon the genius storytelling and song writing of Steven Merritt.
6. Rory Nellis - There Are Enough Songs In The World
Tumblr media
Genres: Pop, Pop Rock, Folk, Folk Rock, Baroque Pop, Indie Rock, Indie Pop
Country of origin: Northern Ireland
This one surprised me. Usually I'm really over critical of music of people I know in real life, mainly because most people I know who are musicians don't make good music (that I know of). Thankfully this dude has talent. Having been a fan of a few songs from his old band 7 Summits, Rory Nellis has really outshined himself as a songwriter on this new album. I am a sucker for singer songwriters (being a casual one myself) and it's really hard to find actual personality and storytelling in modern music today (especially with Ed Sheeran writing the same song over and over again about how much he loves some girl  even though she isn't perfect. What a perfect cash cow. Exploiting insecurity to get some sex. Real classy Ed. You'll be the awkward wedding dance for years to come. Sorry for the rant, I just hate when music is exploited for marketing purposes). Thankfully Rory Nellis has created an album where each song has it's own personality, let alone just one singular album (gotta respect that). In many ways this album is the oldest son to 50 Song Memoirs. A reflection of a bright future with a mature progress but some slight yearnings for echoes of nostalgia and that secret yearning we all have to just escape it all. Musically the album is a collection of many different styles, with some songs having a beautiful whisper, others have some of the hookiest chorus' you'll hear all year and others have a build up of brilliant and almost epic crescendos. Rory may not have the strongest singing voice in music today, but his tone oozes with character and personailty, expressing an impressive range of emotions and technically his voice can hit some pretty impressive highs too. Also this album is so easily accessible. Just under 40 minutes, it never wears out it's welcome, and easily has you reaching for the replay button. (Also can someone please get rid of Ed Sheeran please and replace him with Rory Nellis. The world would be a better place)
5. Bent Knee - Land Animal
Tumblr media
Genres: Art Rock, Progressive Rock, Experimental Rock, Baroque Pop, Pop
Country of origin: USA
I was surprised I have only come across these guys now because this is exactly what I was looking for. These guys tackle art and progressive music in such a weird and eclectic way that it's almost criminal to ignore. With the backing of Courtney Swain (one of the most underlooked front women in rock), the emotions in this album can range from incredibly gentle, playful, emotional and almost dramatically scary in the matter of a heartbeat. The tightness of the band is also something to master, with incredible rhythmically and melodic complicated phrases being moved too and fro so masterfully and surprisingly becoming incredibly accessible for a casual musical listener. One of the most innovative bands going today and a masterful piece of work they have created.
4. Leprous - {Malina}
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Rock, Art Rock, Progressive Metal, Experimental Rock. Djent, Pop Rock
Country of origin: Norway
These guys can never escape my top 10 and there's a reason for it. They are the most underlooked dynamic band that is working today. Having the pleasure of seeing them live and meeting 2 of the guys at their show, I can gladly say I am a lifetime fan. Having said this, I was rather mixed with this album on my original approach. After releasing their masterpiece 2 years ago, I was confused at this album as the punch and flare has been dwindled down. But like a fine wine, this album is much more than an attention grabber. Having toned down the metal part of their sound, the band have had a bigger focus now on melody and rhythm, crafting some of their most powerful performances and chorus' to date, with Einar Solberg's vocals being the real clencher (seriously, this guy is one of the best and most emotive singers in the world. He's like a male Björk). Bettering themselves than on their previous releases without having to re trade the same old territory, this album is a massive achievement for the band and only has me giddy with excitement to see what they have lined up next.
3. Pain Of Salvation - In The Passing Light Of Day
Tumblr media
Genres: Progressive Metal, Progressive Rock, Hard Rock, Experimental Rock, Djent
Country of origin: Sweden, Iceland & France
After taking a few years off due to lead singer Daniel Gildenlöw's brush with death due to a flesh eating bacteria, Pain Of Salvation have came back to creating new music...about that brush with the flesh eating bacteria. But only these guys could do it with the best intentions and creating an amazing emotional and creative story about a man dancing with death and becoming intoxicated by it's toxic sting. Back to their metal sounds, the band have come back with a gritty persona which has been heightened by their muddy ride through classic rock on their previous Road Salt projects. Backed up by some amazing vocal and guitar performances from Daniel and short lasting member Ragnar Zolberg, the writing team have created a masterpiece, with some of the most dramatic, beautiful and heart wrenching moments of their careers. Lyrically spellbinding, the concept is perfectly structured with an amazing tapestry of pain, suffering, love, hope and lack thereof. A gem of their career and a hopeful look into the future of the band.
2. Everything Everything - A Fever Dream
Tumblr media
Genres: Pop Rock, Pop, Art Rock, Electronic, Progressive Rock, Experimental Rock, Indie Pop
Country of origin: England
2 years ago these guys got album of the year, and for a while they were definitely number one, but after stewing this one over it is taking a slight back seat. But there is no ill in this. This album is phenomenal. While Get To Heaven was a bleak look at the horrors of the world from a distance, this album is a the horrors next door to you. On the last album it was a stranger, now it's your neighbour, and “they're nothing like you and me.” While the last album had a bleak background of musical horror to accompany them, the band have went more in a poppy stadium sound which only shows the validity of the popularity of the dangers the band is presenting in the music. The band present their strongest hooks and Jonathan Higgs screams higher than ever before. Also the production on this album is almost perfection. Incredibly glossy with a brilliant Sabbathy sounding guitar sound to add extra grit and power to the multitude of crashes and waves throughout.
1. Jamie Lenman - Devolver
Tumblr media
Genres: Post Hardcore, Punk, Pop Rock, Pop, Indie Rock
Country of origin: England
Having been a casual listener to Reuben in the past, I was shocked to find out that frontman Jamie Lenman's solo material is even more mad and wonderful than his previous work. His last album Muscle Memory is a perfect double album, with one disc being the maddest hardcore music you can hear and the other half being smartly crafted fun singer songwriter stuff. So on this album, Lenman has pushed these sounds together to make an amalgamation of pure perfection. If 50 Song Memoir is the parent, There Are Enough Songs In The World is the older brother, this album is definitely the younger brother. A snotty nosed best friend with all the best jokes, the best stories but the deepest and most emotional memories. An album dealing with devolving back into the past, Lenman creates an emotional roller-coaster filled with laughs, cries and an ever loving friendly embrace from your closest family member or best friend. Poppy, aggressive, rocking and beautiful. Musically this album has some of the most rocking riffs you will hear all year, with one of the best guitar tones I have heard in a very long time (so rocking, crunchy and heavy). A perfectly filled masterpiece which really shows of one of the most underlooked talents to emerge from the UK.

The Top 10 Films Of 2016
This years list was very hard to choose. This year had some absolutely amazing films, so picking just 10 was a hard one. But I think I have it right this time.
Heres some rules
1.Technically some of these movies have been released in 2014, but some where only released at film festivals or had overseas released. I usually go by the rules of if it was released in Cinemas in 2015 or on DVD
10. Tale Of Tales (Matteo Garrone)
Tumblr media
Fairytales should be dark. There is nothing better than having the darker side of life being introduced to you as a child. Now I would not say children should be watching this, but this movie did take me back to the thoughts I did have as a child. Very much a collection of tales with a slight threading narrative throughout, each tale is a mad little journey into the fantasy world that Garrone creates. With some great performances throughout (particularly Shirley Henderson), the movie is carried mostly by Garrone's direction, making the most of the small budget that he has. Certain moments of this movie will stick with you for a very long time.
9. Sing Street (John Carney)
Tumblr media
Being a musician and Irish, of course this movie would grab my attention. It was basically made for me. But even at that, Carney has always been smart with his musical movies. Because not only is this a hilarious comedy, the drama in this movie is very potent and incredibly relatable (with Jack Reynor's performance being a must see). The songs created for this movie also are incredibly well made, very catchy and really work well with  the movie. Heartwarming and a lot of fun.
8. 13th (Ava DuVernay)
Tumblr media
Being a musician and Irish, of course this movie would grab my attention. It was basically made for me. But even at that, Carney has always been smart with his musical movies. Because not only is this a hilarious comedy, the drama in this movie is very potent and incredibly relatable (with Jack Reynor's performance being a must see). The songs created for this movie also are incredibly well made, very catchy and really work well with  the movie. Heartwarming and a lot of fun.
7. Where To Invade Next (Michael Moore)
Tumblr media
Living in Northern Ireland (which is in the UK) its obvious that we are slowly turning into little America. And why would we want that. The things that USA doesn't have is scary. I would never want to live there, as much as Hollywoods romanticising wants me to. Michael Moore's personality at times can be overbearing, but at least he does his research. So seeing the positives of socialist and non socialist countries that could happily turn a good country into a better one is interesting. Also the historic moments and choices of interviews are brilliant too.
6. The Girl With All The Gifts (Colm McCarthy)
Tumblr media
Another big surprise for me, this movie really wasn't what I was expecting. Zombies have been done to death, so for a zombie movie to be in my top 10 must mean that they've been doing something right. The cast for this movie is perfect with an outstanding performance from Sennia Nanua (the best example of a good child actor). Great concepts, amazing direction and some very interesting questions which deal with morality, humanity and the progression of our planet. An eco horror movie, if that is even possible. Also the soundtrack on this film is brilliant too.
5. Tickled (David Farrier & Dylan Reeve)
Tumblr media
In many ways this documentary is the best example of how your life can very easy turn into a horror movie. The story of a weird tickling competition video turns into a down the rabbit hole scandal which moves  all the way around the world. Funny, highly interesting, tense and frightening, thankfully David Farrier's loveable personality keeps us watching and guides our hands through his mad journey.
4. Hush (Mike Flanagan)
Tumblr media
The home invasion movies has seen a resurgence, but directors are finding better ways at using this genre to incorporate more tension. And what better tension can be brought with a deaf protagonist and a sociopathic antagonist. This movie was just very smart and had amazing lead performances from Kate Siegel and John Gallagher Jr. Excellently executed and smarter than it should be. Flanagan is a horror auteur I'd keep my eye on.
3. Arrival (Denis Villeneuve)
Tumblr media
This year was a depressing year. Any hope for humanity was slowly taken away. This movie was a brilliant embrace of love. Not just for film-making but for humanity in general. With an amazing twist that is very smartfully presented, this movie shows a brilliant side of exploring a very simple idea...communication. The cinematography and effects are outstanding and the soundtrack is incredibly haunting and grand in size. Amy Adams shows her teeth finally after a few not so brilliant performances in the other films this year, and she really is the focal point of this movie.
2. Victoria (Sebastian Schipper)
Tumblr media
The gimmick of this movie really could have been the fatal wound that ended it. A one shot movie is a daunting task, but this movie really did pull of. Intense as hell, the plot of this movie has some great mad twists, and the acting in this movie is spectacular (with some outstanding performances from Fredrick Lau & Laia Costa). The best way to describe this movie is that its in real time, but it does not feel like all these actions took place in one night. The adrenaline rush is so high.
1. Nocturnal Animals (Tom Ford)
Tumblr media
The opening scene in this movie is the best double bluff I've ever seen. But this movie is very much a double bluff. In many ways dissecting this movie would be like trimming a bonsai tree. There is so much depth and brilliance in this movie. Ford really is a director who pays a lot of attention to mise en scene, the screenplay and specifically the performances of his actors. Amy Adams has another great performance, but I was blown away by Michael Shannon and in particular Aaron Taylor Johnson, who plays one of the best villains of the year. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a movie which I can use to argue films importance as an artform.
