Yukiko let out a sheepish, but lighthearted laugh at Chie’s response. Here she was, always taking the lead on anything they did together. Fighting shadows, jumping into the TV world, facing their final threat… Chie did it all with such vigor and energy. She was always so brave, but nothing showed her bravery more than what was happening before the innkeeper right now. Right at that moment, the atmosphere became light, Chie’s hands felt even softer and every breath of air was refreshing. 

But nothing was as revitalizing as the simple, but sincere embrace that enveloped Yukiko. She was definitely one for personal space, yet this was a breach that was accepted with open arms, figuratively and literally. Usually when the brunette hugged her, it was with the ferocity and strength of a bear. This.. This hug was different. The affection was there, yet it wasn’t as over-exaggerated. She held Yukiko as she felt she should be treated: gently and with the utmost care. She felt like a treasure in her arms, never wanting to be let go.

Then she heard the phrase she never thought she’d ever hear. I love you.

Love… Yes.

That was it. That’s how she felt about Chie. What a beautiful word. Absolutely perfect.

She felt her eyes water, at the very thought that she had someone she loved so much. Someone who loved her back with just as much intensity. 

“We deserve each other. We really do. You give me so much strength to keep going on, every day. I never really knew what to say to you to make it seem so, but  love… The word you just said fits this puzzle so seamlessly. I love you too, Chie. With all that I am.”

Chie wondered for a moment if she’d said something wrong. Even after all that, a part of Chie was afraid that by saying those three simple words, that she’d messed the whole thing up. The thought that such a thing could occur made her blood run cold and tense all over, but the embrace being returned made her feel warm and fuzzy again.

And then Yukiko returned her saying right back, and Chie felt as if she was going to burst. Even here, in this desolate hellhole, away from all of their friends, Chie was happy. After all, she had her queen, her angel, by her side and in her arms, seemingly never to let go. Her heart was pounding, her face was flushing, and everything was beautiful, even as it felt as if the world itself had stopped on the pair of lovers.

Lovers... how interesting to call themselves that, when Rise was The Lovers. And yet they were happy with each other, and fit perfectly.

「Yukiko... you have no idea how happy I am to hear you say that. Even if we’re far away from home and everyone else, I feel like it’ll all be okay. Because we have each other now, and we aren’t letting that change anytime soon.」

She wanted to kiss Yukiko so badly, but that could wait. The euphoria took precedence, after all, as did Yukiko’s own readiness and needs. 

Her desires could wait now.

Oh, so this guy was interested in some of Chie’s fried chicken, huh? Well, she was going to save it for when she got back to her apartment, but seeing as how he was so curious about it, she figured she’d let him give it a try. If he was interested, that is.

「Yep! That’s chicken, all right! See, they coat this in a mix of coating - I actually dunno if they do the more liquid-y kind or the hand-breading and they fry it up to get the coating all crispy! Then.. well, that’s pretty much it. I got it from a place just down the street! It’s really good chicken too... did you want some?」

A breeze had picked up during their conversation, wafting the scent of the flower shop around them. The unusually quiet shopping district became nothing more than the perfect place for Chie to express everything. Her undying resolve to protect her friends, her desire to become stronger, and most importantly, how much she cared for her best friend. Groups of people wandering the shops were nothing but muffled murmurs. All that could be heard was the faint wind and Chie’s words. 

At first, the innkeeper wasn’t too sure how to feel, mainly because she wasn’t sure why Chie was telling her all this. They were already friends, and she didn’t have to worry about anything becoming between them. Yet, Chie felt there was. A sort of invisible barrier keeping her from becoming even closer with Yukiko. She blushed at the very thought of being the source of Chie’s strength. She was already so strong on her own…. It was flattering to hear that Yukiko helped her with all that. Chie needed her, that was true. Yukiko…needed Chie so much more.

“It’s gotten pretty quiet around here… Even though we’re in the shopping district, all I hear is the warmth in your voice, Chie. It’s a nice day out and there’s a gentle floral scent in the air… You couldn’t have chosen a better place to say all this.”

Yukiko may have been oblivious to other advances during her time at Yasogami High, but she knew now. She could finally grasp what Chie was trying to convey. Feelings of care. Feelings of… of…

Even in her own mind, Yukiko blushed at the very thought.

She reached out slowly towards Chie, taking her hands in her own. Chie always responded so positively to touch, and it served as a reassurance that she was listening. Understanding what she was saying.

“’I probably don’t feel the same way’… I really hope you don’t think that… On the contrary, you’ve really hit the nail on the head. I care about you, Chie. So much. Having you by my side since the day we met is one of the happiest moments of my life. We’re always there for each other. I promise… I’ll always be here with you. Forget the prince… You’re my King.”

It was actually really warm out, and that surprised Chie. The scent of flowers permeated her nose for a moment, but it dissipated along with everything else around her as Yukiko took Chie’s hands into her own. The mere sensation of Yukiko’s touch was enough to cause Chie to feel as though her heart skipped a bit, and the air was sucked right out of her lungs. As her cheeks became redder than Yukiko’s sweater, Chie felt as if she was going to die.

Of disappointment or happiness she wasn’t sure, however, until Yukiko opened her mouth once more to reply. And then the world felt like it stopped. Did... did Yukiko just... seriously...

「I’m... the King to your Queen, huh? So then...」The thought of what she was about ready to say made Chie feel even more embarrassed. Still, she’d come this far, so... may as well take the last little plunge, right?「Oh, Yukiko. You have no idea how happy I really am to hear you say that kind of thing to me, of all people. You deserve so much better than me, and yet... here we are, heh...」  

Chie would have rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly, but instead she simply stood even more embarrassed in Yukiko’s grip. Still trying to process what was going through her head, Chie simply brought her friend in closer for a tight hug, as if to protect her in a loving embrace. Love... a funny concept, and one that Chie didn’t think about much because she didn’t feel like she was worth it. At least, until now... until Yukiko came back to her once again and made her feel like a superhero.

But really, Yukiko was the real hero out of them.

「I... I still can’t really believe you feel the same way I do, Yukiko. Really... the reason I didn’t tell you all this earlier because I was scared of that being the case. But now... now I feel like I’m on top of the world. Like I really am worth it after all. And, best of all I can safely say that...」A deep breath. She had to calm down, but somehow she wasn’t sure that was possible anymore... not with what she wanted to say.

「That I... I love you.」

What an odd feeling. Having Chie claim to have memories that were supposedly shared with Yukiko made her feel uneasy. Just what exactly did this city do to her memories to have them be so different from her friend’s? Hopefully she’d find her answer during her unpleasant stay here. Yet those memories were the least of her concerns at present. 

She watched Chie intently, as words from the heart spilled out of her mouth. Usually when she talked, she didn’t really try to mask any of her statements with symbols and other poetic strategies. She was one to be direct and blunt. Hearing her talk in such a way made Yukiko realize that this wasn’t just your average conversation. Chie had been thinking about what to say during this particular moment of her life for a long time. 

Had she truly been searching for him? After her rescue, she hadn’t mentioned it much to anyone from their group. The only thing continuously brought up, much to her disdain, was by Teddie with the whole ‘scoring’ thing. She knew deep down that Chie was serious in what she was saying, but the girl in red couldn’t help but laugh a little. Not to poke fun, but because of how happy she was.

“Do you remember when you encountered my other self with Yu-kun and Yosuke-kun? She said that you were my prince. When I was denying what she was saying… I was denying the fact that I hated being chained down by the responsibility that was being forced on me. The part about you being my prince… I never denied that. It’s the truth. It always has been.”

Why would she keep looking for her prince, when she had been with her since the very beginning?

“I haven’t been searching for my prince because she’s been by my side for as long as I can remember. And that’s you, Chie.”

Yukiko still wasn’t too sure what was the exact point of Chie’s statement from the heart, but she hoped that her response would help put her best friend at ease.

Chie felt like she was going to burst. She was... really saying this to her? Yukiko, who was quite possibly the best friend that Chie ever had, was really saying that she was her prince all along. But... did Yukiko really know what Chie meant by that? Or would she have to explain it even more? The very thought of having to explain herself to Yukiko made Chie feel embarrassed and small.

Even still, she took the plunge now, and she had to see it through until the end. No more waiting. No more second thoughts. She had to do this now.

「Yukiko... I’m not sure if you get what I mean. I mean... I’ve never been much good around guys, and I’ve never really seen any guys as more than friends. And, well, when I’m around you, I feel a lot stronger, more confident. Like I really can do anything. Like I’m superhuman. And everything that I want to do in life, I want to do with you right there beside me.」

Chie really didn’t know what to say to get her point across better, but she couldn’t just out and out kiss her, could she? No, that wouldn’t be fair to Yukiko in case she didn’t feel the same way. But... she really wanted to. Right now. Just... cup Yukiko’s cheeks in her hands and gently kiss her, to show her how she felt rather than just tell her.

But it wasn’t fair to Yukiko if she did that. After all, there was no way she could feel the same way that Chie did. 

「And... I know you probably won’t feel the same way, but I don’t want to be just your friend anymore. All my training would be useless if you weren’t there with me, to give me something to want to protect with my own life. I want to... I want to be with you forever. I want to protect you, and care for you, and be there by your side for the rest of my life. I may be your prince, but to me, you’re forever the queen, Yukiko.」

There. Hopefully that would do. If not... if Yukiko still didn’t understand, then Chie wasn’t sure if she ever could tell her how she felt.
