such a brilliant little detail. the voice actors are doing a tremendous job with this podcast!

As we enter a short hiatus waiting for the next Dracula Daily update, I thought I’d compile the beginning of every Re: Dracula entry released so far in order to display Jonathan’s degrading mental health over the course of the past two weeks (not including Mina and Lucy’s letters)

He’s really going through it 😔

this is why those early chapters are some of my absolute favourites in the book for showing the true horrors found within this story.

Jonathan is trapped, sleep deprived, seeing all these red flags that he knows are BAD but doesn't fully understand yet.

and Dracula is a master manipulator, the perfect mix of charming and threatening. he has set Jonathan up to trust him despite his fears and despite the questions he has around what the Count really is.

our boy doesn't quite realise that he's fallen into a classic example of an abusive, toxic relationship. and it's SO unnerving to us, the audience, watching it all play out in real time. we're just as helpless as he is to change the course of what's happening, and can only share in those feelings of impending doom.

So if Drac did this whole "leave the forbidden door unlocked but openable after a great effort" on purpose then it's so smart because now

1. Jonathan disobeyed and was rescued

2. Jonathan confesses that he can only look to Dracula for safety

3. Jonathan says that the Count, whose presence has made him hate these rooms, is now the least dreadful thing in the Castle to him

4. He likens his own room of nightmares to Dracula, and both are likened to a sanctuary

So this way Dracula has a desperate solicitor ready to run to his arms for safety. Playing up Jonathan's initial fascination for him.

Jonathan is sleepless, trapped, days numbered, haunted by nightmares, and the undead, utterly controlled by his host... yet Dracula terrifies him the least. Because he saved him. From wolves, from other vampires.

And if he's ever endangered again, Jonathan can only seek him as sanctuary.

I think the reason why I'm loving our Dracula book club (thanks to Dracula daily and re:Dracula) is that people are sharing EVERYTHING. Art, writing, food, pictures, theatre plays, just everything, because we're all collectively loving this story unfold.

And the best part: nobody feels constrained or stifled because of copyright, ownership. ITS PUBLIC DOMAIN. No permissions need to be asked, if we do, its out of courtesy. But it really shows how it's all a labour of love. I love it so much.

Its what art should be about <3
