Toriko 264 & 265

Some people seem to be upset because their expectations were betrayed, which I think is understandable.  I felt the same way after I first read the spoiler for 264—and then was promptly distracted by the fact that Toriko and Komatsu have been living together in Gourmet matrimony for the past year…but I digress.  Anyway, I took a week-long break from the series, so that the shock would wear off, and then came back to it quite refreshed.  And then 265 ended up being awesome, which helped a lot.  Now I’m just looking forward to what comes next, like usual.

Chapter 264

For me, the shock value of this chapter sort of overshadows everything else in it.  However, my fujoshi lizard brain quickly focused on all the amazing domestic!ToriKoma stuff.  I now have a whole year’s worth of head canon to create for these two.  Gotta get started.  And the Gourmet World does look like a fantastic place, to say the least.  Really looking forward to getting back there.

Chapter 265

I think what I like most about this chapter is the way it encapsulates the series as a whole.  This isn’t the first time we’ve seen these themes and it’s not the first time Toriko and Komatsu have saved people, but somehow it all comes together really well.  You feel for the kid, you abhor the actions of the guards but also understand that hunger makes people crazy—it’s hard for me to explain right now, but I just thought this chapter was really well done.  I felt really happy after reading it.

Toriko’s “Food Spice” move was awesome.  So basically he’s strong enough now to casually throw things to the four corners of the Human World?  YES.

Komatsu, Komatsu, KOMATSU.  Slick as hell.  I cannot wait to see all of his new skills (and get some explanation for old ones, like the Revitalizing Kitchen Knife).  Seriously, all Shimabu has to do is make Komatsu look cool and I’ll be like, “Greatest chapter ever!”  I am that shallow when it comes to him.

I’m assuming we’re heading into an arc devoted to completing Ichiryuu’s Full Course and setting the Human World right, but we’ll see.  Right now I’m just looking forward to seeing the other Heavenly Kings and other characters, and eventually getting some explanation of what exactly the hell is going on right now.
