It used to be warmer even during the nights.

Nights where she earned it. A little bit of warmth, the company of someone eager to ride off her success and glory, the buzz of alcohol in her veins and dulling her senses. Easing her thoughts, pulling her away from this... self-imposed cycle of self-destruction.

Everyone wanted fame. Everyone wanted their names in the lights and on the screens of television . A life of luxury and ease, where men and women loved you and wealth seemed to fall at your knees, fattened on lazy living and meals that could feed villages for days. What isn't there to love?

What isn't there to love about strangers stalking you? About walking into a place and being crowded when all you want is to be left alone. When was the last time she didn't have to hide her face?

When was the last time leadership wasn't trying to rope her into their control? When was the last time anyone grieved for the people she fought with? How could they celebrate her when the ones she loved were dying and discriminated against?

A gust of wind blows her hair back, looking down from the edge.

She didn't want this. This life she was pulled into, all because of her drive to do good by others.

She could just... let it all go.

...

No, she couldn't. Too many people relied on her. Maybe, when her business was done and she could rest easily knowing those she cared for were safe and better off... but for now, there were people who needed her.

Achilles. How fitting a name she'd been given.

What made Gravel gravitate towards her dual short blades? Does she have experience with other types of weaponry?

I headcanon as a part of her training that Gravel has some skill with a variety of weapons, but nothing she wouldn't be able to keep hidden on her person or transport discreetly. Swords have the advantage of range, but they're too obvious and even unreliable at times, and while bows are effective in assassination, Gravel's duties often have her close by her charge, needing her to be ready to intercept a threat at any given moment. Being able to see and kill a potential assassin won't do her any good if she can't defend her target- not a lot of weapons give her room to work in a large variety of situations.

A knife is very effective and versatile, useful for many situations where other weapons might fail. They're sturdy enough to withstand a lot of abuse, small enough to hide in many different places and light enough to quickly execute an opponent without dwelling on it. Gravel has also proven on several occasions how effective her twin daggers can be, only made more efficient due to the wire connecting the two blades, allowing her to even throw one of her weapons at a semi-short distance and retrieve them just as fast- and that only scratches the surface of how useful the wire is.

She's capable enough with other weapons to stand up for herself, but against a skilled opponent, it won't do her any good. The knives are simple and easy to use, and give her a wide range of techniques and skills that can overwhelm her enemies in combination with her sheer tenacity and ferocity.

But most importantly, knives allow her to appear unassuming. Subterfuge is the biggest part of Gravel's arsenal- looking as if she doesn't pose a threat allows her to slip under the radar and operate in plain view. Larger weapons draw too much attention, just as heavy armor would. It's essential that her weapons are plain looking and blend in with her normal attire.

Just like Gravel, her entire combat style revolves around appearing lesser than she really is. By the time her opponents realize the real danger she possesses, it's far too late.

After all, who suspects a slave Knight to be so ruthless.
