Yo Flans! I'm seeing Paul McCartney next month and am working on getting more familiar with his post-Beatles stuff in preparation, and you definitely seem like someone who'd have good thoughts on where to start. Also interested in your thoughts on the other Beatles work beyond the Beatles.
JF: He is a force of nature. I'm hardly a completist, but I do enjoy him, and he has made some excellent albums. The most famous is Band on the Run, which is kind of like Thriller in that you might already be tired of the strongest tracks since so many were radio staples forever. The Ram album is great, and the McCartney (his first solo album, mostly tracked at his house by himself) is a bumpier ride but has some cool moments.
I haven't fully kept up with the 21st century Paul output, but I think Chaos and Creation is the stand out. A friend of mine, who is huge Paul fan also talks about mid-solo career albums McCartney II and Back to the Egg, but neither of those are familiar to me.
Paul McCartney in recent years has started just releasing EVERYTHING he ever created in the process of creating albums, and while the shortcomings of most of the demos and unreleased songs are kind of obvious, there are some exceptions.
Flowers in the Dirt included some full on collaborations with Elvis Costello, and both of them walked away with a clutch of songs that led to excellent results-but it is really the demos (released in one of these "deluxe set" song dumps), recorded strictly as a duo with both singing and strumming eyeball to eyeball that created the most cool results for me.
This demos is as exciting as anything for me. Check out how impossibly high Paul sings some of the harmony parts.

This version of “Mr. Tambourine Man” (part of the “Spy” improv) features some epic-level Flans silliness. 12/16/06, in Brooklyn.

One of my favorite online cartoonists, Kate Beaton (of Hark! A Vagrant), had a cartoon of hers published in The New Yorker last week! I’m very thrilled for her, and thought I’d share it here too since it’s a pretty fantastic example of her work.
