Umbra fit test 2

palette: PV55 PR101 AG* PBk11 PY129 PY43 PW6. I was trying to build a watercolor/gouache palette to match the landscape concept art on the Furality site for Umbra/2024, so I sketched Jexica in an outfit vaguely inspired by Amelia from SLARPG for testing the color mixes. *AG - Winsor&Newton Aqua Green hasn’t been assigned a pigment code (yet?).

left: marker; right: Sui gouache set. I’m still putting together who and what I’m going to wear to Furality Umbra (June 2024). Starting from the concept jumpsuit on the kakapo on the style sheet. I’ve been wearing baggy overalls a lot this past year irl, and I figured that constructing them with buckles on the back would be more comfortable/accessible for tailed people.

fallen - unfinished gouache/watercolor plein air studies

I have been making my paint palettes portable, telling myself I Should go outside to paint studies from life while I have access to a yard. but the process of plein air painting, even in the yard of the house where I live, was enough to put me into a flare.

it was a bad time, actually, carrying everything out there (and trying to do it with my dog attached). and the standing, maneuvering, trying to see details while balancing my work and the palette, realizing I was already in pain and pushing through…

I didn’t make a good composition for the view I did have (mid-distant), and standing/leaning to view and paint moss without sitting in the mud (so wet) for the composition I liked (closeup) were bad decisions.

I was making bad decisions the whole time, very pain brain of me. I hadn’t brought any titanium white outside, and for some reason I thought my pastelized indanthrone blue would be FINE? as a substitute?!?! after I did that, I considered the painting failed and packed it up.

I said I would plein air paint, and I did. so I met my goal, and that was a success.

If I wanted to try again, I did learn some things that I could improve on. (defining/blocking composition way sooner, watching more James Gurney).

but like… maybe plein air isn’t for me anymore? and that’s okay.

I guess I don’t hear many artists talk about when their disabilities are disabling.

I often bounce back and forth between traditional 2D art and avi building to figure out how I want things to look.

I wanted to test some looks before I take the body into substance. aphantasia as an artist is wild, lol. but I did alter a few things gouachely/altered them with an opaque layer as I worked.

I can’t stop trying to distill my self-image in desperate attempts to regurgitate tropes in order to be seen and understood. i’m not sure it’s an attainable goal, but my brain refuses to settle on ONE concept. mx kit chimera indeed.

the glowing mushrooms as a chronic illness metaphor (idk y’all it for sure feels like i’m barely being held together by mycelium and i just got my fingers crossed that leaving it be to do its thing is the right thing to do??) A++, enjoying wearing the ear mushies in vrc bc physbones are so fun

Nimona star earring also keeps showing up, for gender shifty reference reasons. low poly flavor text for my avis.

finally bought the candygore tail asset that i’ve been eyeing for like two years

I love the term kitbashing but I recently learned it implies I have not been financially supporting asset and avi creators! ;.; Buying an asset and putting money into the hands of another artist is the only thing that makes me Feel anymore, so I wouldn’t call it altruism but I do pay folks for their work!

she’s showing you her new braiding spell! (it’s not going well)

been doing too much digitally and needed to stim—gouache has a sliiiiight grit or grip (or at least the m graham PW6 I pastelize my watercolors with feels grittier than, say, PR122 which is a bit slippery?

idk, it seems like a silly amount of difference but I NEEDED the PW6 feeling on the paintbrush OR ELSE so it’s officially a stim now I guess.

I do feel better tho!

semi-localized epilogue ch 1 - marker

My experience of going through the vrchat world Epilogue Chapter 1 by DrMorro changed me. I’ve felt things in game worlds to be sure, but vr is an incredible medium for surrealism.

I think about this part of epilogue chapter 1 a lot, I don’t know why. Is it the beautiful skybox of pink twilight? the way the checkerboard road bounces that purple light back? the field of rosehips? was it finally seeing the comet in full, after rooms of glimpses through windows?

There is a real bridge I revisit in dreams, crossing a river. the power plant there that ran when I was a child is now defunct.

The wires for the fiction and the real get crossed sometimes, and now each of these scenes is tethered to the other in memory.

Perhaps when I am better at modeling I can create a kudzu-covered homage to art that left me different.

Their Elegant Tippets: watercolor concept sketches + WIP vrchat avatar outfit

I bought the X_711 Androgynous base by Rhoda a few months ago for gender reasons but haven’t made an avi with it yet.

Not technically my first scratch outfit but definitely the most complex so far. SO MANY BONES (tippets, pocket ties)

I’m planning a couple other colorways, like S1 TNG inspired with hot pink and cyan iridescent gauze and whatnot bc a part of me has always dreamed of being a chaotic neutral space twink slootin around the stars and there’s a lot of ship maps in vrc.

FoxiPaws’ Aspen dragon dropped while I was working on this, and I’m tempted to fit this outfit to him when I’m done with it.

okay I may have cried seeing this avi in motion (testing in mmd worlds).

talking in the mirror was the first time I saw the visemes in action and flowing with one another ;_; and it worked ;_;

I'm not very experienced in pixel art, but this gave me a reason to learn Aseprite a bit. I really really really like its symmetry tool

Voxid's tutorials have been so incredibly helpful! For some reason, the way the information is delivered really clicks for me, and I've gained a lot of skills over the course of this project.

haritora feets - Roxy | watercolor sketch, pigments PBk11, PY184, PB29, PV19

I used VRChat to actually socialize! I followed @cavern-of-remembrance here on tumblr when I was first learning about VRC. Roxy’s VR self-portraits inspired me to take up photography in VRC, where I met other photographers! And there’s SO many similarly inspiring artists of all mediums I’ve been introduced to through her reblogs!

Talking about the tech of VR seems to be “the weather” of VRC conversations. Roxy uses a headset and additional hardware (HaritoraX) for full body tracking, so when we met I was like “oooo leggies!” A good icebreaker topic, I think?

When I was describing the hangout to a partner the next day, the words that came out to describe the additional hardware were “she’s got haritora feets”.

I think the vivid hue of her hair strikes me as very close to PB29/ultramarine blue, which made me want to paint it! So that was the base of the palette. The gradient stripe on the pants was so fun to paint!!

2023 2D3D - year art summary template by NagiSpider

I've spent so much of this year working on avatars for VRC that I thought if an avi was the project I was most proud of that month, it should be featured here :> I get a lot out of making a time collage, I wish I'd tried it sooner! This helps me see commonalities in my work, since I still have no idea what my "style" is after all this time. I am fascinated that the way I use color is like a 180 from the palettes I preferred 20 years ago. I don't really understand aesthetic as language very well, though, so I have really enjoyed discovering new artists this year and trying to understand how they are communicating. I wonder if I have been speaking in brighter colors in echolalia sentiment? I'm older than sparkledogs and candygore and clowncore but, having seen what young people have said through eye bleed colors pings my core in truly resonant ways. --wholesome bright colors, too, though. SLARPG has been so good, I don't want it to end. And unfortunately I had to learn emotional intelligence from cartoons just like y'all, but Steven Universe didn't exist until my 30s ;_; it definitely rewired some stuff in me tho

this is actually a progress photo I shot on a whim, but I overworked this piece and prefer the WIP version ;-;

also the decembers are hitting hard and attempting to actually go to an event (even VRC) keeps resulting in a panicked sobbing meltdown, soooo i’m not sure that i’m gonna make it to the gala.

but also I sank so much time into Blender and Unity this last month and haven’t posted anything here, and I feel like I should.
