Note
your backgrounds are insane! do you have any tips on what point-perspective you should use, placing horizon lines and all that? because you seriously are great with scenes that feel spacious and house their characters wonderfully. keep doing what you do man
First of all, thank you so much holy crap😳
My knowledge is limited but I do have a thought process I use.
In terms of what point perspective to use, In general I do not like deciding beforehand because there are technically infinite points of perspective along the horizon line and allowing myself to add them when I need to and see it fit along the way has been more helpful and less restrictive
In terms of where to place the horizon line, I have to remind myself that it just means eye level, and where the eye level is can heavily enhance or change how a scene turns out and feels.
For example in this drawing I wanted to make a scene that feels personal, but also magnificent, as if I glimpsed at something I shouldn't be able to see.
Tumblr media
So as a rule of thumb having the viewer look at the scene from a lower eye level looking upwards can make the scene feel like it's in a higher place or standing(sounds kinda weird I know but this is how my brain works) we can see where our eye level sits by looking at the blue line. Whilst having the subject close to us makes it feel personal still. Just giving it a higher standing doesn't give me that majestic feel yet. Since just an angle can be used for a myriad of emotions, I could steer this angle into one where it makes us feel like an ant and make the subject feel domineering. the pose, colors, and values allow me to steer the vibe of the drawing to what I want. This is why learning fundamentals help because each element really enhances the other. Although this example isn't really great since I'm not finished with it yet(as in the vibe hasn't yet reached the potential I can pull off) hope y'all can forgive me here
Tumblr media
There's also this scene where I wanted it to feel intimate and relatable, as in you can even see something like this in real life(aside from the weird ass colors, unless you're high in the moment that is)
Tumblr media
To do this I place the horizon line to wherever the eye level of the subject is. As you can see from this and the previous example, the perspective point is often way outside the canvas, and it's really not realistic to use a ruler here because it would stretch out the canvas a lot, and I only have so much memory. Here I placed the perspective point for side of the car on the far left, why? Because the side of the car is facing the left so the point is definitely to the left, same for the second point, it's on the right of us because from our view the front of the car is facing to the right.
Tumblr media
Then it's a matter of finding the center line of the object(think of it like finding line of gesture, you want to find where the core of the object is) once you find that core you draw a line towards the horizon line and voila you have a perspective point. It's a bit hard to grasp since my knowledge is limited and I can't demonstrate this effectively yet. Just remember that each object corresponds to a perspective point, as in if there was a cube, each face of the cube has its own perspective point that it's connected to.
Tumblr media
Horizon lines placed at the upper part of the drawing is basically a reverse of when you place it lower. The subject here can feel as if it's beneath us, or it can feel as if we're seeing through an omniscient lense. It depends on distance, and what exactly we are seeing obviously. Context matters a lot, so deciding on what vibe I want to give and what message I want to convey first and foremost saves a lot of grief.
This turned out much longer than I thought but here's a video that helped me out a ton, I'm a complete nerd so I eat these videos up. But the part of the video on how to draw perspective intuitively is generally sufficient to start off with.
There's a lot of things I didn't touch up on, because I'm still learning a lot. Also I implore you to research more of this by reading from more experienced people and doing studies of it. If you're wondering how to do studies though well... If someone asks I'll try to answer it but until then there's some guides on how to do studies online. Personally I remind myself constantly I should NOT retroactively try to make it look pretty, instead I figure out why this aspect of the drawing looks good and learn how to replicate it. Thanks for listening to my Ted talk☺
