ok but isabela’s verse in we don’t talk about bruno was actually genius
everyone else is describing their obviously negative prophecies while isabela, supposedly happily, sings about how she was told her life would be awesome and perfect and all good things
and then we find out isabela actually hates the standard of perfection she’s held to..
Just want to talk about Agustín and Bruno because they probably had an epic bro relationship before Bruno left.
The biggest implication for this is the scene when Agustín finds Mirabel with the jade square. The way Agustín reacts implies that he’s also clearly familiar with Bruno’s bad reputation and knows how the rest of the family, especially Abuela, will react to the square. But there’s no evidence that he ever treated or viewed Bruno according to that bad reputation - instead, when Agustín shows up to help set the table in We Don’t Talk About Bruno, he’s the only one who doesn’t join in on the singing. He was probably one of the few people who recognized that Bruno didn’t cause bad things to happen; Bruno just happened to see a lot of bad things.
Bruno and Agustín also share a lot of similar traits. They’re both somewhat clumsy/uncoordinated, have bad things consistently happen to them (Agustín, physically; Bruno, reputation-wise), and are very caring and protective about those they love.
He felt close enough to Bruno to include himself in the triplet hug when Bruno returns. It’s possible that Bruno and Agustín spent a lot of time together, especially if Bruno hung around Julieta when he wasn’t hidden away in his vision cave and when Julieta was home.
Hey, I just realized, Camilo's part in We Don't Talk About Bruno is different from the others - Pepa and Felix tell a story about Bruno fucking up their wedding day, Dolores explains that she can hear him talking to himself and how the rest of the family struggled to understand his prophecies, then her, Isabela and the random villagers talk about prophecies Bruno gave them. Compared to that, Camilo sounds like he's wandered into the wrong song; he just gives a description and throws in some generic creepy details. It doesn't sound like he's telling Mirabel about their uncle, it's like he's just trying to tell a spooky story to scare his cousin.
Bruno vanished like a decade ago. Camilo and Mirabel are both fifteen.
Of course Camilo's part is different! He hasn't seent the man since he was five, he knows just as much as Mirabel does! He's not really talking about his uncle as a person, he's just making shit up based on what little he remembers, plus whatever assumptions he's made growing up with the knowledge that Bruno's a seer that a lot of people blame for their misfortunes.
And that also affects his description + transformations - when Camilo turns into Bruno, the eyes are always glowing green, because the glowing eyes probably stuck in his memory more than how they normally looked. And of course he thinks Bruno's seven feet tall despite him actually being about the same height as Mirabel. Camilo hasn't seen Bruno since he was five. All adults look ridiculously tall at that age.
Man, when Bruno left I can only imagine Casita trying it’s hardest to convince him to stay. Pulling him back with tiles, moving wooden posts to block him, even getting rid of the stairs in an attempt to make him change his mind.
And only because of Casita is he able to leave without leaving.
Alma saying "Bruno doesn't care about this family"
and then Bruno is finally back and the first thing he says to her after ten years is to defend his fifteen year old niece, to insist that she blame him and not her
and look at Alma's face as she realizes this, that her own son, her quiet baby is being so brave because he thinks Mirabel needs to be protected from her own grandmother, what kind of monster does he think of her, except she finally now understands why
and all she can do is hug him because she never wants to let go, he is her son and she will not lose him again, and you can see that promise in how she looks at him, how she calls him Brunito and takes his hand and pulls him onto the horse
Imagine when Dolores first got her gift. A child who can hear EVERYTHING. Poor thing would have been confused and scared out of her mind. Her room was big and beautiful and people were singing and dancing but Dolores would have been on the verge of tears and no one would have really understood because "it's your gift mi vida, it's a power not a hindrance"
And imagine Tio Bruno picking up little Dolores, and covering her ears with his slender big ones. He would slowly sneak her out of the room, presenting to her the empty casita. He would calm her down and wipe her tears.
"My head hurts Tio" she'd have cried
Bruno would have wiped her tears and slowly offered her to tie something over her ears.
"I know Dolores."
"Does your head hurt too?"
She had asked that question and though she could hear tens of people's screaming in her ears, the little girl had been interested in only one's answer.
Bruno would have hesitated. But slowly, he'd have nodded. "Sometimes, bearing power means bearing its pain. The gift wouldn't have chosen you if it didn't believe in you. And it's okay to feel hurt sometimes. Kinda reminds us we're human too."
And from that day, Dolores thinks back to her Tio's whispered words everytime she got a headache from hearing all of her world.
Bruno is so fucking dramatic. Like, the stairs in his room became taller over time, but his vision cave stayed the same. Right?
The ancient murals of himself on the walls. The long, dark hallway leading to a heavy circle door with an hour glass on it. Theater kid behavior. Do you think when Bruno was young he would purposefully seem as otherworldly as possible? For the bit? He would put on that voice he used with Mirabel when he said "It was your vision Mirabel, not mine.". Camilo really is his nephew, huh?
I rest my case. This dude is not just "🌸SkRuNklY UwU🌸". This dudes a comedian/performer/theater kid with anxiety. Good night tri-state area! I will, till my last dying BREATH, implore and STRONGLY SUGGEST that you write in character Bruno.
Lovely movie🥰 fell in love with the Madrigal family!
(+Also am I the only one who thought Bruno’s prophesy for Isabella sounded a little too ominous when listening ‘We don’t talk about Bruno’ for the first time? I thought it was foreshadowing some kind of super villain duo(pfff😂)
