Treadmill Walking Workout - Effective or Not?
How effective can walking be as an exercise? One example I have is my grandmother, who at 70 years old found her ability to move around was starting to get limited. So she starting walking everday. And when traffic, loose dogs, and teenagers looking for trouble made her uncomfortable, she decided to walk at the school nearby. And for 29 years she walked, everyday, and is still one of the healthiest people I’ve ever known. The only real health problem she had in her old age was cataracts.
No, she wasn’t buff, didn’t have six-pack abs, nor could bench press 200lbs. But what she also didn’t have was diabetes, too much fat on her body, or high cholesterol. She also never lost her balance, broke a hip, or needed to go into assisted living. I look back and am amazed how healthy and a full a life she lived into her twilight years.
So when someone younger than 70 years old asks, do I think walking is an effective exercise, I without hesitation always say yes.
Unlike my grandma, most of us aren’t lucky enough to have a school with a running track nearby. One of the best alternatives for convenience, safety, and controllable exercise routines is a home treadmill. They come in all price ranges and even the lower priced ones have quality machines at affordable prices. It’s not hard to find the best treadmill for walking.
One routine I like, is the 20-minute treadmill workout shown below. It isn’t for the very beginner as it utilizes an incline treadmill as a basis of the workout. But if you’re in decent shape or have been walking for a couple of months regularly, I’d say give it a shot.
