The sequence in which Ponyo offers food to the baby, as seen in the movie Ponyo, was included to show that Ponyo could be selfless and live in the human world. Hayao Miyazaki developed the scene late in production, when he was stuck on how to end the film.

Running was kind of like swimming, and it was just as fun, too!

Because of that, Ponyo ran almost everywhere. It was way more fun than walking, and it wasn’t as loud or rough or...weird as riding in a car. Unfortunately, running didn’t give a lot of time to look in front of you, which led to running into things and people a lot. The small girl was still learning about that, so it was a little bit of a shock when she ran into someone.

“Oof!” 

She fell back, landing on the ground, and shook her head. She stared blankly, dazed for a moment, before she put on a wide smile. “Sorry!”

It was rude to stare, Ponyo knew that by now.

But, she couldn’t get herself to tear her eyes away from...well, she wasn’t quite sure what the other was doing, which is why she was staring in the first place. 

Slowly, she walked over, a look of awe still on her face. She peaked around the person, looking up at their face before pulling on their clothing to get their attention. 

“What’re you doing?”

She shook her head, her hair swinging around wildly as she did so. 

“No, I had a cup before I left home.” Ponyo pulled the thermos back and opened up the top peaking in as if to check to make sure that it was still there. “It’s milk tea and honey. It’s really yummy!”

She twisted the top back on, and held it back out to him with a smile. “’Sides, I can get more later!” She shook it slightly, bouncing on her feet. “Here, here, here!”

     Matt tended to prefer winter, because it gave him the opportunity to pile on clothes to (ideally) cover how thin he was. However, even when just going outside was enough to drag chills up his arm and over his ribs, the young man didn’t ever wear more than his fur-lined vest and heavy boots. Yeah, he was cold, but he told himself that a cigarette would be enough to satisfy him for now. Cold it may be, but anything was better than hanging out at home again.

     He was just about to light up, in fact, when a young girl approached him completely out of the blue. Behind tinted goggles, the young man’s eyes widened slightly in surprise. Usually kids (and more specifically, their parents) gave him a wide berth, either because of the stench of cigarettes or his sketchy demeanour, but this one seemed entirely unafraid.  

     … A thermos? His unlit cigarette dangled loosely between two knuckles for a long while before he responsed with “—- Shouldn’t you keep that for yourself?”
