25 years ago today on February 17th 1993 serial killer Paul Bernardo was arrested for murder

Bernardo’s series of murders came to an end a quarter of a century ago today when he was arrested for the murders of Tammy Homolka (15), Leslie Mahaffy (14) and Kristen French (15). Alongside Karla Homolka, Paul Bernardo murdered these girls and sexually assaulted many more. Initially, Karla was not arrested when Bernardo was. In the brief time before she too was caught, Karla was consumed by severe anxiety which she attempted to treat with significant amounts of painkillers and alcohol.

14-year-old Leslie Mahaffy was one of the tragic victims of notorious serial killer couple Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. Leslie had attended the funeral and wake for her school friend Chris Evans who died in a car accident on the evening of June 14, 1991. Following the wake, Leslie and some friends decided to gather and drink to Chris’ memory. Leslie then made her way home but discovered she had been locked out as it was past her curfew and very late, around 2am. She then walked to a pay phone and called a friend asking if she could stay over but, for some reason, her friend refused. Leslie decided to walk back home and wake up her mother. On the way, Paul Bernardo found Leslie as he was out looking for license plates to steal. Bernardo approached Leslie and offered her a cigarette, then suddenly turned on her, wrapping his sweatshirt around her head and forcing her into his car. He sped home and woke up his wife, Karla Homolka who was in bed, telling her he had a surprise for her. 

Homolka was initially upset and did not want to participate in Bernardo’s sexual assaulting of Leslie, instead deciding to do housework and taking their dog for a walk the following day while Bernardo was with Leslie in a bedroom in the house. However, later on the next day, Homolka would end up participating in assaulting and torturing the teenage girl and the couple eventually murdered Leslie together that night. Bernardo first attempted to strangle Leslie with electrical cord but, when this didn’t work, Homolka gave Leslie sedatives she had stolen from a vet clinic she was working at, rendering her unconscious. Bernardo claims that when he left the house to get gas for his car, Leslie was still alive, but when he returned she was dead - presumably due to Homolka killing her. Eventually, Bernardo would dismember Leslie’s body with a saw he borrowed from his grandfather, encase the parts in concrete and dump them in Lake Gibson, near St Catharine’s, Ontario. The concrete slabs were discovered a few days later by fisherman on the lake.

Paul Bernardo published a 631-paged fictional thriller e-book titled A Mad World Order which features violent characters including Mexican drug cartel members and Russian Militants as well as many references to the Illuminati. It was published on Amazon, but was removed due to the outrage for permitting him to sell his book there. Before it was taken down, however, it was considered a ‘’#1 best seller’’ on the site’s war fiction section. It is not known how Paul wrote the book or how he got it on there.

Canadian Serial Killer Paul Bernardo’s 12th Grade Yearbook Photo

Bernardo’s yearbook quote lists his favourite pastime as “meeting females”. One such female Bernardo met was Karla Homolka. Together Bernardo and Homolka murdered Karla’s 15 year old sister Tammy as well as schoolgirls Leslie Mahaffy (14) and Kristen French (15).

At age 53 Bernardo remains imprisoned in the Maximum Security Millhaven Institution in Ontario, Canada.

Karla Homolka meanwhile was released unconditionally on July 4th, 2005. Homolka has remarried, changed her name, had three children and regularly volunteers at a children’s elementary school in Montreal.

Often referred to as the “Ken and Barbie Killers” because of their striking good looks, Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka were married serial killers from Canada who matched in brutality and depravity. The first victim of the duo was Homolka’s 15-year-old sister, Tammy. On 23 December, 1990, after a Christmas party at the Homolka family home, Tammy, Paul, and Karla sat up drinking. It was then that Karla spiked Tammy’s drink with halcyon and covered her mouth with a rag soaked in halothane which was stolen from the veterinary clinic where Karla worked. The idea was that the couple would rape Tammy after Paul decided he wanted to have sex with a virgin. The couple raped Tammy, who later choked on her vomit and died. The death was ruled as accidental. Over the next two years, the couple kidnapped, and videotaped the rape, torture, and murder of two more teenagers - 15-year-old Kristen French and 14-year-old Leslie Mahaffy. Mahaffey was strangled to death with an electrical cord by Bernardo while clutching a teddy bear Homolka had given her in an attempt to comfort her. The couple were eventually apprehended and Bernardo was sentenced to life imprisonment, while Homolka received leniency in return for full cooperation. This “deal with the devil” as it became known was arranged before videotapes of Homolka were released, showing she was just as compliant as Bernardo in the crimes. She was released in 2005 after serving just twelve years.

Karla Homolka Volunteering At Schools

According to a report by the Montreal edition of Breakfast Television, murderer Karla Homolka volunteered at her children’s elementary school in Notre-Dame-de-Grace last March.

Homolka also supervised a school trip of kindergarten children from Montreal’s Greaves Adventist Academy in March and once brought her dog to the school for students to pet.

The private school are well aware of Homolka’s criminal past.

Arsinoe IV of Egypt, Younger Sister of Queen Cleopatra - 41 BC

Arsinoe IV waged an ultimately unsuccessful war against the Roman Empire leading to her capture. As prisoner she was transported to Rome in 46 BC where she was paraded through the city before an effigy of the Lighthouse of Alexandria (where the Egyptian Empire had once defeated the Romans in battle).

Arsinoe was shown mercy and allowed to live out her days in the Temple of Artemis. This was the case for approximately five years before Cleopatra ordered her younger sister’s murder in 41 BC. Arsinoe was executed on the steps of the temple by Cleopatra’s lover Mark Antony, a scandalous act violating the sacred principle of temple sanctuary.

Italian Poet Isabella di Morra - 1546

Isabella led her entire life oppressed by her brothers, her works not being allowed to be released during her lifetime and only becoming appreciated after her death. Her brothers forbade her from visiting literary salons or courts leaving her almost entirely isolated. Her works are considered a precursor to the era of Romantic poetry.

Isabella’s brothers learned of an affair she was supposedly having by intercepting her letters with Diego Sandoval De Castro. Isabella’s brothers murdered both her, Diego and the tutor who couriered the letters between them. Her brother’s found her with these letters in her possession and stabbed her to death as a result. It is believed Isabella was buried in an unmarked grave in the local church.

Tammy Homolka - 1990

Fifteen year old Tammy was murdered by her serial killer sister Karla Homolka and her fiance Paul Bernardo on Christmas Eve 1990. Karla was a 10th grade student at the Winston Churchill Secondary School and an enthusiastic participant in her school’s soccer team before she was murdered. Tammy had become a subject of obsession for Bernardo who had Karla pretend to be her little sister when she and Bernardo had sex.

Karla and Bernardo plied Tammy with alcohol laced with sedatives to knock her unconscious. Once she was unconscious, Bernardo raped the girl who was two weeks shy of her 16th birthday. Tammy then became sick and died. Karla and Bernardo hid evidence of their attack before calling an ambulance. Her death was initially believed to be an accident until Bernardo and Karla were apprehended for the murders of schoolgirls Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French, causing Tammy’s death to be further investigated.

Aqsa Parvez - 2007

Aqsa was a 16 year old High School student in Ontario, Canada when she was murdered by her brother and father. Friends who knew Aqsa stated that she had expressed her desire previously to run away from her family. Aqsa angered her family by talking on the phone at night, running away and wanting to visit the mall with her friends.

She was strangled to death by her brother Waqas Parvez in her bedroom (the only one in the house which did not have a door) at approximately 7:30 AM on December 10th, 2007. Her murder was ruled to be an honour killing. Outside of the trial of her murderers her other brother Muhammad Shan stated “We are with them” in reference to Aqsa’s brother and father.
