Vivien Leigh was hesitant on playing the aging divorcee in Ship of Fools, due largely to the fact that this character had been a Southerner, and she had already played three Southern women in the past. However the author of the novel from which the film had ascended, Katherine Anne Porter, was adamant that only Vivien or Katharine Hepburn could play the part she had written, so Vivien obliged, getting an abundant amount of control over the character. One of the things she had striven to change from the earlier drafts of the script had been how pessimistic Mrs. Treadwell was portrayed as, as Vivien thought she had been “too bitter” to be sympathized with.
