I love how in so many fantasy series, especially those for girls, we’re told that selfishness is wrong and shit and it’s written as a character flaw, and usually given whole arcs of why with this moral that’s treated like taking a sledgehammer to the face.
And then there’s Discworld where PTerry goes “yeah but nah” and has Tiffany Aching explicitly turn selfishness into a weapon to defeat an Eldritch Fae Queen.
It seems small and trivial, but really think of whom the Tiffany Aching books are aimed at, and just let that sink in.
In a society where young girls are still being socialised to live according to certain “good” traits of femininity decided by patriarchal values, Pterry literally tells you that it’s okay to fucking be selfish, makes it’s a positive thing, makes it a power.
everytime I've seen a recovering addict on this site post something about wishing there were more fun social spaces that weren't geared around substance use (including myself) I've seen them get called immature asexual anti-sex homophobes who need to grow up and get a grip. which is definitely cool and normal and a reasonable way to react to people talking about different accessibility needs.
cant stop thinking abt ursula k. le guin’s essay abt the carrier bag theory….. she’s like, maybe the first human tool was not a weapon, but rather something that holds, a bag, a pouch, a vessel, something for gathering and storing and sharing. let’s shift the narrative of humanity from that of violence to that of safekeeping. and i’m like
Hey tumblr we need to have a talk about something I noticed.
Specifically going by tags attached to images I’ve blogged or reblogged, there seems to be a misconception that marginalia means “any quirky medieval art”.
It’s not.
Marginalia is anything in the margins of a text.
The ones that will get posted on tumblr will more often than not be quirky drawings, but they also include notes, annotations, scribbles, and whatever else. The quirky drawings just happen to get a lot of press on here because, well. They’re quirky drawings.
For instance, see this image here of a platanista (river dolphin) chomping down on an elephant’s trunk?
Had a dream where Johnny from “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” came out as a trans woman and the response was so unanimously positive it reversed nearly all of the transphobic bills in the South. She played live in Georgia to an audience of about a third of the US.
I enjoy Kira/Keiko as a ship, but I wish that most of the discussion about them didn’t center on the “O’Brien polycule”. I’m interested in how their dynamic changed from vaguely adversarial in “In the Hands of the Prophets” to friendly in later seasons. I want to know how they navigated the differences in their opinions on faith and religion. I want to know if/how Keiko’s thoughts on Bajoran religion changed over time. I want to know if Kira experienced any lingering resentment toward Keiko. I want to know how long it took them to become friends – if one or both of them made a great effort to mend the divide between them. I want to know if they have disagreements after that or if they carefully try to avoid speaking about topics where their opinions differ. There’s a lot that’s potentially interesting about their dynamic outside of how it relates to Miles.
"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.
It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).
Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.
One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.

Due to an ice store in January putting a tree on our roof, tearing off some gutters, damaging other gutters, the outdoor faucets exploding, and other damages, I had to open commissions three months early than planned. We had a $1000 insurance deductible that needed to be covered, and now it is thanks to your help!
I'm keeping commissions open until all slots are taken. They will be closed in June and all through the dry season. This is due to how incredibly hot my sewing room becomes. A window unit a/c isn't an option because of how extremely small the room is. Commissions will reopen probably at the end of September, then close in November.
Quilt commission prices start at $20 (pins and magnets) and come with the option of paying more than my listed price.
There are five slots available, and it's first come, first serve. I offer the option of paying 50% up front, with weekly and monthly installments thereafter. When the final payment is received, I'll ship you quilt. Contact me for the 50% option so I can either set up a custom listing OR an invoice and commission contract. The invoice is sent via PayPal, but you do not need a PayPal account to pay it.
@anastasiaoftheironwood - Lap quilt, 50%, finished quilt top
@embervoices - six coasters, 0%, commission received

Fun Fact
The “We are the 99%” Tumblr blog became the slogan for the Occupy Wall Street movement.
