Famous Album Cover:
Janet Jackson - Control (1986):
This album changed the direction of pop music, setting the blueprint for pop artists today.
The cover for the album was designed by Tony Viramontes, a well known fashion illustrator and photographer based in Europe and Japan.
The World of Fashion Illustrator Tony Viramontes discusses how Jackson was "transformed from a former child star into an assured fashion forward figure with her trendsetting big hair and severe all black ensemble.
The album title being in small text under what appears to be a large quadrilateral shape comes together carefully to create something similar to an exclamation point.
The simple shapes and colours that contrasted Janet’s big hair and strong personality gave the album cover a new life whilst not letting Janet blend into the background.

Word Brainstorms:
Later on we decided to work manually with words rather than visuals and came up with over 30 words associated with the album and then to hone in on four main words we would like to work off of.
Tumblr media
I thought that this was an easy exercise as with this album what you see is what you get.
The group go out of their way to make it evident that a lot of the themes and words used in this album is for shock value and to get their point across.
I chose the words Police Brutality, Social Commentary, Identity and The Truth for my mind map.

Thumbnails:
Today we were asked to jot down some initial words that we felt resonated with our albums after listening to them.
After doing that we were told to put those words into simple quick thumbnails and icons.
I felt I had a lot of ideas that I was able to express visually easily enough due to the fact that prior to this I had expressed my reaction to the album to its full extent visually already so the ideas came to me quicker.
We were then told to pick the two we felt most described the album well without words.
I found this part hard as I was connected to nearly all of my thumbnails and felt that they all individually stood out and brought something to the table.
Tumblr media
I ended up choosing the flag with a bullet hole bleeding through it and the spray can spewing out a simple blue star.
I felt that this represented the resilience, war and extremism that is at the forefront of this album.

Initial Ideas:
After listening to the album the entire way through once, I decided, in order to fully immerse my artistic outlook into the album I dedicated a page in my sketchbook to each song.
Some songs had more results than others but what I like the most about this exercise is the freedom I gave myself to use simple shapes and colour as well as creating lines based on the beats accompanied by every song.

Album Cover Analysis:
The album cover itself features the six main original members of the group.
Starting from the top, going clockwise it’s as follows:
- Arabian Prince
- Eazy E
- Dr Dre
- Mc Ren
- DJ Yella
- Ice Cube
Other than the photo featuring the members the cover features the title of the album in a chalk-like font aswell as the name of the group in this strikingly red text at the top.
There are these plain black, rigid borders at the top and bottom, possibly resembling a pothole?
The member holding the gun (Eazy E), somewhat hints at the subject matter for the album and also reinstates the fact that the group isn’t here to tailor to the main audience or public approval.
Through discussing this cover with my fellow peers it is obvious that the cover shows the point of view of someone that the members of the group are about to kill, hence why Eazy E has a gun facing the viewer.
It is a clever tactic to emphasis the striking material that if featured in this album.

Graphic Design Week 1 -

Project Brief:
Today I started my chosen discipline, Graphic Design.
We were introduced to the brief for our five week long project.
We were each given a famous album cover and asked to redesign it based on our own perception of the album.
The album I was given is “Straight Outta Compton” by N.W.A. (1988).
Tumblr media
It is the debut studio album by the legendary American hip hop group, originally released in 1988. Considered one of the most influential albums of all time.
The album was wildly criticised for its discussions of topics such as police brutality, racism, drugs, crime and especially the crack epidemic that was very widespread at the time.
One of the most popular songs off the album titled “Fuck Tha Police” even went as far to receive a complaint letter from the F.B.I assistant director for public affairs for “Promoting violence against law enforcement”.
It is evident that this album is timeless and has had a wide impact on the public all up to today.

Graphic Design Posters:
For my final piece in this project, based on certain aspects of my prints I wanted to bring that back to graphic design and make a poster for each of the four elements of nature, taking into account the principles of graphic design and how layout should be carefully considered beforehand.
I also took inspiration from Leta Sobierajski’s work when creating these posters with her simple but strong design choices.
I decided to take include a few words relating to each element in the posters so it could act as a reminder of what each element is about.

Fire Print:
My fire print was based on Yves Klein’s “Fire paintings”.
I used the basic shapes of burn marks on surfaces for this print.
