These three are definitely protagonists in some shenanigans. (This was the testing corner where I tested brushes/patterns/lighting. While it’s typical to do this on a separate piece of canvas than the final piece, I’m also the kind of person who gets confused when I have more that three tabs open, so. i kept it where I could find it.)

annotated thumbnails to rough sketch

I love thumbnail sketches. One of my favorites. I got a bunch from the TodoDeku-big-bang-2023 (tddk-bb-2023)(from the Boku No Hero Academia fandom, in case you’re viewing this post on accident) and I’ll describe them each a little. mostly for me. they’re like mini origin stories or something and I love that stuff.

#1: from 01.02.2023 (day, month, year)

These were for emmigma​ ‘s story and were the first thumbnails I did for the year. Before this, I did some character profiles- which are just drawing of the characters 100% from reference and not with any added or adjusted flair. Just how they look in canon (; I will not be posting these).

What I was trying to do here was to grab some of the elements of the story that I liked and put them physically into space. The elements I tried to keep were: Todo & Deku being physically close and in the centre, or at least as the most important part of the piece, that things are kept soft, and room for lighting. Lighting isn’t usually the most important thing for me, and that was fun to play with. Then for ‘softness’ I was looking for something that felt calm or at least peaceful, I really did not want to draw any tense scenes for this, what came across for me from the story was how at ease the characters are around one another, and I wanted to try and highlight that.

Later, I did two more thumbnails for this story, but I really liked these initial ones I did, and the two on the left are what I went with.

#2: from 01.03.2023

These were for spidey’s story and are Super rough. For these, the story is rather tense, the anxiety of Deku (our protagonist) is high, and he is looking for a way out of a bad situation, so for these I tried to: have space divided up so that Deku is framed as being trapped, to leave Deku with more natural/organic motions while Todo gets more rigid/unnatural stances, and to have the two opposed to one another instead of together. This was to highlight the narrative, Todo’s otherness/otherworldlyness, and, of course, the central conflict: will this kid (Todo) hurt Deku?

Later, the next day, I came back and refined what I wanted to do for the finals:

#3: from 02.03.2023

A lot is happening here and not all the notes are from when I drew these. There are in fact More Notes on the physical paper; I fully support writing across drawings, that’s good stuff there. By far, this is one of the fastest turnaround times from ‘I think this is a good idea’ to ‘yeah, let’s keep this one’; I really did not sit on these, which is very odd for me.

For both of these, I utilized the rule of third and the golden ratio. This is Mega evident in the final versions, especially Fire Escape, where Deku and Todo are literally on the horizontal&vertical guidelines opposing one another, and Todo’s fire and the hands reaching for Deku make an arc to circle around one another.

What’s missing from the final version of Fire Escape is how much the hands reaching for Deku resemble claws; I knew I would lose that detail in the final while I was working on it and I accepted it as a loss.

#4: from 04.03.2023

Last one, this is for Streetlights, but of the digital sketch overtop of the physical (on paper) sketch, which is typically my basis for all digital drawings. And this is a weird one, because this wasn’t used for the final version and got scrapped- I made a new file about two months before the due date and started over again. Which is wild and I would not necessarily recommend. Why would I do that to me? Because I saw exactly one (1) digital drawing tutorial and said ‘oh wow’ and took my art and went Yeet. Anyways, this I have some thoughts on and I might break it down more, or not, I am unsure as of right now.

Hands does not get another rough composition shot, because I kid you not, I thought the final version would be erasable and it WASN’T. The rough sketch became the final product in a massive string of ‘lol, whoops’.

but, that is it for this year, next up is some zooms and then we’re done!
