Food: Lunch- Food from Rende West/ Dinner- Food from Epicuria at Covel
Daily Plan:
8am: Wake up and go to lecture
11pm: Get lunch at Rende West

Reflection: Today was such an amazing day. I got a decent amount of school work done, I got to meet up with some friends, and I went to my first ever concert. Post Malone is my favorite artist as I grew up listening to his music all throughout middle and high school. Today, I realized not only does he make good music but he is also a phenomenal performer. Some of his songs that were played today were so much better than the recording, and his recorded music is already so good. I was genuinely mindblown and perhaps shed a tear or two listening.
Overall I rate the day 9/10.

A prehealth career that is not my own:
Another prehealth career outside of my desired career– neurosurgery– is optometry. Optometry is specifically a medical professional that handles disorders of the eye. This can range from your most basic vision correction with glasses and contacts to deformities of the eyeball. Optometrists are different from your typical family doctors in the degrees and certifications that they get. Optometrists become doctors of optometry (O.D.) by going to optometry school, and general medical physicians attend medical school and become doctors of medicine (M.D.). Optometrists are not allowed to operate or perform surgery– those are ophthalmologists. Ophthalmologists specifically go through medical school to get an M.D. certification, and they are specialists in eye surgery. As someone with corrective lenses, I regularly see an optometrist to check the progression of my vision. From my appointments, I have been told that although different parts of the year are definitely busier than others, the career itself has a very stable and manageable work-life balance. According to salary.com, the median salary for an optometrist in Los Angeles is about $152,654. I feel that if I were to choose a specialty that was not in the M.D. field, optometry might do it for me.

Reflection: Today had a really rough start. I woke up with a scratched eye from my night contacts so I was in pain for most of the day. I also took my midterm first thing when I woke up and it was the hardest midterm I have ever taken in my life. There is not much I can do about it now, but I really don’t know how to feel. The day ended well because I got to see my friends and spend the rest of the night with them.

Week 6 Weekly Post
What are you most proud of and why?
The one thing I am most proud of for myself is my ability to meet and connect with people. This is not a skill I decided to actively develop; rather, it is a skill I picked up from just enjoying talking with people. I believe I have a very big social battery and based off of tests such as the MBTI, I would definitely consider myself an extrovert. I used to be very self-centered and would never allow others to speak. I was very stubborn and pushing. Over the course of high school and especially college, I learned the importance of listening and how it contributes to building connections with people. I learned that just simply being a good listener opens so much trust from one person and another, and listening also allows you to understand who a person is through their own lens. So many times I have pushed for people to connect with me through my own experiences, but I have learned that having a two-sided conversation makes just that much more of a difference. Although there are definitely many things that I have left to improve about my social skills, I am just simply proud of how much improvement I have made since I was in high school. I am also proud of how shameless I am to go up to a stranger who I find intriguing just because I want to get to know them. Of course, my ability to connect with people is predominantly translated into making new friends and creating study groups, but I also realize how useful these skills are to my career and forming connections with people who could influence my career. Many people emphasize the importance and effectiveness of networking for jobs and work experience, and I wholeheartedly agree. I wish to be able to make any conversation I have with people as comfortable and natural as possible.
Prehealth career outside your own.
Another prehealth career aside from Neurosurgery in Anesthesiology. For Anesthesiology, it is the same process as most M.D. careers. One must complete their undergraduate years, move on to medical school, and finish in residency and fellowship. The residency for Anesthesiology is typically about four years adding up to about 12 years of total school and training. Anesthesiology specifically works with the monitoring of vital life functions, managing pain, and maintaining overall bodily function and homeostasis. Commonly, Anesthesiologists work in the operating room as administrators of pain medications and sedatives. Aside from the drugs, they also have to ensure that the patient is breathing properly and their bodily activity is still normal. In my personal experience, Anesthesiologists overall assist surgeons in other miscellaneous tasks such as raising and lowering the operating table, changing music, and changing out equipment. Anesthesiologists are notorious for their work-life balance as well as salary. The work that they do is less labor intensive than many other medical professionals such as nurses and surgeons; however, in the event that CPR is needed, they are the ones that must jump in and help. Many surgeries that go according to plan without complications allow the Anesthesiologist to administer drugs and monitor. There is not as much risk if procedures go accordingly.
Below is a video of my appreciation to my brothers and sisters and how they make my life so much better!
