Kongji and Patji(콩쥐팥쥐)
Tumblr media
Logline : A little girls’ magical story to endure oppression from her step-mother and step-sister.
Opinion & Analysis-
The story reinforces the belief that justice came from those in authoritative positions, particularly those associated with royal authority. The punisher of evil in the narrative, the governor, derives his power and judgment from their social status. This narrative choice aligns with a recurring theme in Korean stories, where individuals with high social status, such as secret royal inspectors or officials executing royal orders, are the ones who execute the punishment. This repetitive story structure subtly solidifies the audience's belief that individuals of higher social class are inherently just.
Also, the story incorporates agricultural symbols that resonate with the predominantly agrarian society of early Korea. The various tests and challenges faced by Kongji, along with the use of symbols like cow, toad, and birds, reflect the daily life and hardships of farmers. Diligence and patience, virtues emphasized in this story, align with the values of the farming community. The narrative suggests that enduring physical hardships is a virtue, expecting the biggest audiences were farmers at that time.
