Final summary

This semester I learned various types of expressive arts: Cultural Materialism, Poststructuralism and Postmodernism. Cultural materialism is based on the influence of science and technology, economy, population and other developments on shaping social structure and superstructure through strict scientific.

And at this stage, I have a better grasp of interpreting some works through these forms. Through interactions with group members, we also learned about the starting point of other people's views on design. For example, in the first week, I needed to find my own perspective on things, and learned the fun and art of enjoying life.

Or through the second week of study, I know how to analyse the reasons and concepts of contemporary famous brand logo design and how to implement them. Through the museum trip in the third week, I learned about the development history and national culture of Singapore. What I like most is the theme design and co-branded design of various festivals on the Singapore transport card. Display the trend elements and design styles of the past era through exhibitions, and emotions of people in the past by appreciating these.

week 11: Postmodernism

Modernism is a design style that transcends tradition, focuses on functionality and simplicity, and links design with function. It is called a modernist designer.

We chose to use rulers to express modernism and think about how to present it in a new perspective. And use it to reinvent its traditional meaning. Then we found the poster in picture 2 on Pinterest. I think this poster embodies the simplicity and innovation of modernism. Only a few line segments of different colours are used to show the spatial structure of the work and are interspersed together.

Our slogan is RULERS FOR GOOD MEASURE. Our tagline highlights the benefits of the item and describe terms. In addition, we chose the three keywords, which are typography, plurality and distortion. My teammates edited the photo in Ai and drew line segments of different colours to combine them, and added a layer effect. Nathan chose three different colours: red, purple, and yellow. These more eye-catching colours highlight the layering and make it clear at a glance.

The third picture is an AI work I completed last semester. I think it is also a work of modernist work because I used simple cubes to express a spatial world named after me. And I printed my name around the cube. In order to be more consistent with this week's theme, I will choose a cubic object for design, like a Rubik's cube. The slogan can be like ROTATING AND EXERCISING THE BRAIN. I will choose the two keywords, which are rotation and three-dimensional. In the future I may try to combine tradition with modernity. For example, Andy Warhol's work named The Marilyn Diptych.

Week 9: Cultural Materialism

In our group, Infrastructures are divided into three categories: transportation, shopping and education. After that, we found examples of electric vehicles and bus stop display in Singapore. Their presence enables passengers to more efficiently and quickly understand where they are located. and the establishment of multiple charging stations for new energy electric vehicles can effectively solve the problem that electric vehicles are more likely to run out of power than gasoline vehicles and cannot find charging piles.

But, there also needs to be opportunities for improvement. For example, the charging cord can easily trip people up. However, as technology and economy determine the continuous improvement of the superstructure, the problems founds will also be solved.

Basic shopping facilities such as vending machines, security cameras and ATMs are located on the roadside. These facilities can help people meet their basic needs, such as getting money from ATMs to fill their stomachs and buy daily necessities, while surveillance cameras can maintain law and order.

Education-related infrastructure such as multimedia teaching equipment used in classrooms. It can help teachers conveniently present the class content to students and conduct teaching, so that all student can intuitively understand the class content. In addition, there are also health-related infrastructure, such as AED first aid kits installed in many schools. It can help students to rescue themselves and treat emergency physical conditions.

In addition, the emergence of various electronic products has greatly improved people's work and study efficiency, but it has also led to some people's over-reliance on them. Their appearance will make some people ignore the meaning and beauty of life. As a designer, we also need to pay more attention to the experience and beauty in real life.

Week 10: Poststructuralism

Structuralism is not explained through its own meaning but is associated with it through a word that has the same effect or the same meaning as it. It is a concept that is independent of the object itself. It is not a concept that never changes, but it changes constantly according to the cultural, political, social and economic status of the world. In this lesson, I found four items to try and think about.

The first one is a matcha flavored chocolate bar sold in Japanese supermarkets. Because the outer shell and wrapping paper of this chocolate bar have the same meaning. Besides, it can also be used as a storage box to store change or candy. Second one is a mini capsule machine taken during the photography class. because it looks like a water dispenser, we associate it with the gashapon machine. It can also be like a bank ATM because it has the same nature as the gashapon machine, both of which take out items from the machine.

The clock that was taken in a Singapore MRT station. Because this clock is made of electronics, I associate it with technology. fourth one is my card bag. I associated the function of a card holder with that of a tote bag so I put the two together. that, my team member and I rethink the words in his photos and selected words with the same meaning as the pictures. And adopt a unified colour tone.

My favourite design is Yohji Yamamoto. I know him because my sister songsongjie graduated from the same school as him, and she is also my idol. His designs contain modern oriental aesthetics. Created a range of brands in his own style. His work has a sense of atmosphere, and some simple lines. There is also an Oriental artistic charming and simple. Gabardine and tweed are the materials that Yohji commonly use. Black is one of the important elements in his design works. Adding a title design to some simple, pieces to make them more appealing to the eye.

This poster uses jumping slow motion to let people understand the simplicity and smoothness of his clothes. One of my favorite magazine covers is that one. The photo does a good job of displaying the woman’s grace and attractiveness. In my suggestion, calm and beauty are the functions of the work.(149 words)

The fifth picture is Singapore's tourism peripheral products. It uses the symbol of Singapore, which comes from the myth of Singapore: lion head and fish tail. The pocket square and luggage tag is made of polyester and plastic. Week 1: introduction;Phenomenology

The first picture was taken when our class went out to take pictures last semester. It was at noon when the sun was shining brightly, and I felt It was very cool under the tree at first, but when I took a closer look, the shadow of the tree cast on the ground looked very natural. Then the tree swayed gently with the wind, and the shadows of the leaves also swayed. I felt that this moment should be recorded.I also have a desire to preserve this moment forever. Week 2: Aesthetics

During the week's event our group decided to split up. The first one I found was a drugstore in Bugis. What attracted me to its meaning was that it used pill shapes to express what it sold in a simple and clear way. Its logo communication the decoration style of its store. I think its trademark recognition is relatively high so that I can notice it at a glance.

The second one is when I found SHISEIDO's cosmetics counter at OG Mall. Its red colour attracted my attention at first. And its logo and name are easier to interpret when put together. And its trademark symbolises softness, elegance and beauty. The flowers inside meaning give birth to new life and creating new value. This is also the embodiment of the brand's values.

Apart from these, my favourite is Gong cha's trademark. It used an ancient Chinese writing method. And very simple and neat design. And its brand interpretation is that we can drink the same good tea as the princes and nobles in ancient China. And represents their company's high quality, high requirements and self-expectations for itself. And the overall logo looks like a cup of Gongcha. In addition, what I also like is Nikon's trademark, because this is a big company that mainly focuses on cameras and lenses. My personal understanding of the trademark is that the white strips represent the lenses, and the overall yellow background represents the action of light passing through the lenses. Overall, our team found a simple and neat design trademark.

Week 5: Growth Mindset

The first major moment in this group is that we are choosing stores to create. At first, I chose a relatively simple trademark, but my team members thought it could not create anything, so we chose the orange juice trademark to create it. I prefer wild creation methods so that I write quickly, but I have also been trying to think about things related to oranges. In comparison, I am more satisfied with the No.14 because I imagine the whole trademark as candy to describe orange juice as sweet and delicious. And I think of the satisfaction when I ate my sister's orange-flavoured candy from Japan when I was a child. I also want customers to feel the same way like me. After that, I prefer the No.15 because I want to use the boy's big mouth to show the good taste of orange juice. And there is No.7 with the same meaning. I use OK gestures to express the deliciousness of orange juice. No.12 I want to express a lot of juice after cutting oranges, and use the trademark name "z" to express the sound of cutting orange. Week 2: collaborative skills

First of all, the concept of this model was proposed by my team members. And he also put forward the view of "one person one side". I use newspapers and circular stickers to create this work. Because my sister called songsongjie has always liked to write some calligraphy with a brush, I wrote a Chinese poem in the newspaper under her influence. And I chose two colours of stickers, one is similar to the color of the newspaper, and the other is more eye-catching to highlight the visual effect. In my opinion, this is successful. Week 3: Emotional intelligence

In the Craft workshop class, my hands-on ability was improved in the Critical thinking class. I learned how to express my inspiration in more interesting ways. Expressing my own ideas through art can attract the interest of others. Besides, In the CTS class, I found a way to relax my body and mind and let go of stress. This was very helpful when I was nervous near the end of the semester. And through the group discussion and cooperation process in this class, I learned how to play my role in the studio class. In the group work, I completed the assigned tasks well and helped other group members who encountered difficulties. and put forward the areas where you can improve the group work and make improvements. In the photography class, I used the high emotional intelligence I learned in the critical class to communicate with classmates. When I didn’t understand the photography skills, I would humbly ask for other’s advices, and I also helped them solve problems that they didn’t understand but I understand the problem.
