Jack Gray Video is...
My goal is to create an interview between a subject and an animated character I have created. Using a green screen, I will isolate an individual and place them in a controlled context.  By continuing my interest in the behavioral reaction patterns from people in different social situations, I will explore these reactions from my subject in this new approach.
Following my interest in social behaviors from the ‘Portrait’ assignment, I will attempt to examine these reactions from a subject who is being interviewed by an animated character I have designed.  The subject will gain a limited understanding of what to expect from this interview. They will understand that it is designed as a set-up dinner date situation.  With a prerecorded script of questions for my animated character to ask the subject, I will record these reactions, and examine them in relation to my previous findings from the portrait assignment. This project will examine how a person can interact and respond to my art.  By creating this new way to present my animations, I am exploring my artistic horizon and will learn a credible skill set that will help me in my artistic endeavors.  This project is a great opportunity to explore a direct human reaction to my posed events and questions under these controlled conditions.
As the advancement of video technology progresses, this possibility to merge virtual worlds is further expanding.  In such works like The Three Transitions by Peter Campus, he exhibits this explorative fascination in real time with the abilities created with this technology. Many artists and films have explored the connections between live action and animation in a work, which is fascinating as a play with reality.
The Roland Video mixer in the green studio will enable me to present this interaction live. I will position a monitor to show the subject, how the composited interaction looks between themselves and my creation as it is recording.  One camera will be set up to record the composited interaction.  Another camera will be placed on the subject alone to focus on their individual reactions.  This view will closely explore the behavioral reactions of the subject outside of the posed setting.  Because I am stressing the importance of the pre-planning, the post-production aspect will be limited.  As the animation is prerecorded, the conversation will obviously be one-sided. Because the interviewer is a prerecording, I am forfeiting my ability to further explore the specific questions posed to the subject.  However, I hope that a well-designed script will enable an interesting reaction.  The questions will need to be timed accordingly, and I will use a stopwatch to show the participant how much time they have to answer the questions.
My creative project is approached as an interview of a subject, but also stands as a portrait of myself.  The participant will be placed into a stage, where there reactions will follow according to what I have chosen to present to them.  As the interviewer in the portrait assignment, I found it difficult to communicate with my subject in the presence of a camera.  I found this demeanor of discomfort I promoted, was evident in my interviewee.  This is neither bad nor good, but it prompted me to explore different ways in which I could create an interview in which my presence is suggested but not apparent.
