As we enter into Jeremy’s Waitress run, I’d like to remind people…

- This is live theater. It is okay to applaud him when he comes out, but keep it at a minimal length, you don’t want to make it awkward because no one can hear when you’re applauding like that, so they can’t continue until you stop.

- Again, I repeat… THIS IS LIVE THEATER. Do not catcall, whistle, or scream whenever he says something funny, flirty, whatever. You’re ruining the experience for those around you who just came to see the show. WE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR HIM AND THE REST OF THE CAST SING, not hear you scream during Bad Idea/Bad Idea (Reprise).

- Bootlegs are ILLEGAL. Stop asking for them in public. There are so few Masters anymore because they don’t trust people like YOU to not post it everywhere. You’re ruining it for everyone else.

- Please be respectful of the rest of the cast. They are there doing the show, also. This is not just about Jeremy. The rest of the cast deserves love also, they are a talented bunch of amazing people. Especially at stage door. These are real people who just put on a show for you for three(ish) hours. Don’t be rude or dismissive just because they aren’t Jeremy. And don’t get me started on going to the stage door when you haven’t seen the show.

- And just in general… stop treating live theater like a fucking concert. It’s not. When you scream or catcall, you’re distracting. Not only to the actors themselves, but to the rest of the audience who is there trying to enjoy the show. We all paid to be there. Let us enjoy the show.

Long story short, I know you’re excited. I am, too! I can’t wait to see the show. But please don’t ruin it for me or anyone else who is going to see it by being an asshole. This isn’t a concert, it is live theater. Please be respectful. And enjoy yourself!

I’ve been dying to return to Broadway for quite some time, and American Son is everything I could ask for: challenging, timely, intimate, and a vast departure from anything else I’ve ever done. What I love most about this piece is that from the moment the lights come up, it forces us to listen. Even when we disagree, even when we know we must be right, it reminds us we still have to listen to each other, and for some reason that’s something I think we collectively decided to stop doing a long time ago.
