My learning agreement aimed to look at editorial, book binding and supporting visuals (e.g. maps), which I have researched, experimented and developed throughout this project. This process has not been linear as mapped out on my blog and process book working between layout developments and conducting a variety of in depth research, both primary and secondary. From my first draft to my final editorial, I have achieved a body of work that both narrate my grandfathers stories and experiences during the Second World War whilst providing history and context for my audience to better understand the stories told.
In my research, I look at Vitor Carvalho's The Holocaust as an example that uses typographic devices to demonstrate feelings of heaviness, voidness and discomfort. My response, uses typography to show the 'flashes of memory' using size, font and colour. To improve, I require a stronger structure. This project has taught me a lot about rules in typography and editorial, but sometimes I try too hard when less is more.
This project has been challenging, from overcoming obstacles such as the initial transcribing and translating to getting to grips with editorial. After hand-in, I would like to experiment with glueing my pages and making a clamshell box. This was not made due to the thickness of my book which would look awkward/empty. I also want to revisit the option of including the original audio with the handwritten animation to bring his words to life for the audience.
My current layout for my process book is simple and beautifully executed. I was advised to strengthen my wayfinding by including general content at the beginning of the book to outline each content section.
FMP Feedback
The book has been well executed with its layout, page furniture, type handling and images. To better celebrate the Italian text, it was advised to layout the Italian separately rather than overlap it across the English text. It was also advised to include a paragraph at the start of the book explaining that the stories are tapes and why they have been ordered accordingly to help the reader.
