Twelve A4 sheets of 100gsm cartridge (sketch) paper, covered in colour and shapes. I didn’t want the day to escape without me painting something... I decided to use only a handful of colours, mix, and paint with only one brush. Limitations and cheap paper. I love doing stuff like this when I’m a bit to tired to commit to a more planned project. I will save these for other purposes, possibly collage. . . Skies studies. Always fun to figure out different styles and weather in watercolour. That bottom right one looks so chilly and wintery. 🥶 👉One style doesn’t fit all landscape paintings, so practicing many types of skies is so important for matching the mood of the foreground. 👉Also be sure to look at the work of the masters (Turner and Constable for example); Instagram artists go through style trends, so I recommend checking out skies throughout art history too for a wealth of inspiration outside of the grid. . . I’ve spent the last four days - morning to late evening - learning new video editing software (out of necessity, but that’s a short story for another time) while editing the 63GB footage I already have done for the skies class (that number will probably triple for GBs as I finish filming). My brain is swollen from all this new info and I’m enjoying it. (I do love learning new things.) BUT! I haven’t made art in days, so tonight I’m drawing some marks on this big work on paper that’s still on my easel from earlier last week. Some juicy swatches from my slim little travel watercolour set. Working late (feels later with the time change), listening to some old trip-hop music [gosh, I 💛 Apple Music], and working on the first layer of a sky watercolour. I got a supplies order in today and I’m stoked to resume work on my huge @skillshare class production. It’s been a weird work month (various projects and jobs, as well as complete - stressful & expensive - rebuilds of my two main work computers), but I learned that if I’m a little less hard on myself I can keep swimming in these weird 2020 waters. I have to remind myself that if I thrash around, I waste energy but if I relax and go with the flow a bit, I can keep moving forward. I doubt I’m the only one feeling/realising this. I have never been good with change, but I am learning to adapt. We all are. 👉Right now I’m just enjoying the music, the paint, and perhaps a cheeky adult beverage. 😉 Keep swimming, y’all. Good evening from the studio. It’s been a busy month and I feel like I haven’t been able to post a lot of art because of other art business things, such as writing and producing my latest class, and rebuilding computers. So, I’ve had a few personal, materials/supplies, and technological setbacks this month, but I am persevering and trying to keep positive. We can only do so much and humankind is coping and trying to work in such a fractured society. We all gotta cut each other some slack, and that includes ourselves. Subtle differences in all four studies, but so much learned by painting them at the same time. I can easily see what I would change and combine from all of these for a larger painting. 👉Every painting we create is an interpretation and as artists we can pick and choose the way we present the scene and in what style. (There is more detail in the photo reference, but hard to see at this angle.) 👉Also, working small is harder than working large; the urge to cram in detail is strong and hard to control. Popping down the first layers on a watercolour sky study x four. You all know what a big fan of repetition I am for learning your subject and these four studies of one photo are no different. 👉By doing this quad of studies, I can see what works and what doesn’t, and take that knowledge to a final, larger painting. New art supplies! 😍 I love water soluble crayons, and so when I saw that a set of Lyra were on offer, I pounced. I’m giving them a test drive tonight in my recently purchased Cachet mixed media sketchbook. I think I’m in love.
