just wanted to post a photo of my beautiful hardback edition of twilight because i'm about to read it. it's one of my favourite covers. i like the bright warm background image contrasted with the cool colours of crowfeather. also that fluffy tabby down the bottom is so cute!

warriors: the new prophecy #4: starlight
date started: 05/02/2023 | date finished: 26/02/2023
i love how mothwing is basically still an apprentice because she hadn’t finished her training before mudfur died, but also she’s riverclan’s only medicine cat. she’s stuck in-between being an apprentice and an experienced medicine cat. the other medicine cats can’t really argue with her decisions, like to swim across the lake to go to the gathering island. she seems so lively and fun and kinda childish but no one can question her. i like it a lot.
they have hinted at the idea that tallstar would appoint onewhisker to succeed him when he dies by having him tend to tallstar all the time and mudclaw be argumentative with thunderclan which is contradictory to the behaviour of the rest of windclan. i do like that tallstar values friendship over uhh “strong leadership”, although i am not sure if strong leadership is exactly what mudclaw has but whatever. i’m glad that tallstar appointed onewhisker, and i also like that onewhisker is close to tallstar.
i just bought tallstar’s revenge today (17/02/2023) and i know that onewhisker will be in that book so i’ll have to read that soon!
firestar is once again being told by a good friend of his, while dying, who he should appoint as deputy. and why are they always so wrong about the choices? tallstar and whitestorm are both smart kitties.
i didn’t like that tallstar commented on brambleclaw being a good potential deputy. i just think brackenfur makes more sense. graystripe already offloaded his responsibilities as deputy onto brackenfur earlier in this series (which is kinda sad because he also neglected his responsibilities as brackenfur’s mentor in the first arc). just because brambleclaw is the main character in this arc doesn’t mean he needs to be deputy! not that i remembered this, but i saw a post yesterday discussing how brambleclaw was appointed as firestar’s deputy right after he hesitated to stop hawkfrost from murdering firestar. like how does that make sense. firestar is like “well you almost let me be killed, but you didn’t. and for that, i will reward you by giving you responsibility for our clan!”. we will have to see how much that frustrates me in the next two books.
ugh and further along brambleclaw is literally saying to himself that he deserves to be deputy! i don’t think that’s ever been how it works. like you don’t become deputy after filling out your good boy points. i mean, he hasn’t even had an apprentice yet, which is one of the rules about becoming deputy. why is he so entitled! and i think that we are supposed to interpret firestar as being unreasonable. i mean, maybe he should appoint a new deputy. but it certainly shouldn’t be brambleclaw. ridiculous!!
and the next chapter, brambleclaw loses his temper at mousefur and brackenfur diffuses the situation and brambleclaw even says to himself that brackenfur deserves to be deputy over him, and other warriors too! but he blames it on his heritage rather than the fact that he’s inexperienced and entitled. firestar obviously trusts him if he gave him his warrior name, let him lead the way to their new territory, has him next to him and onewhisker while their mutual friend speaks his last words. grrr gimme back leafpaw and squirrelflight povs please!!
firestar asked brambleclaw to do an “apprentice task”, which was collecting moss for bedding. i don’t really like that tasks that help the clan have some sort of respectability tier list to them. like caring for the elders shouldn’t be a shameful task given to naughty apprentices. but brambleclaw is very upset that he’s given such a task, because he’s suuuuuch a respectable warrioooor. meanwhile we swap to leafpaw’s perspective and she mentally praises him for taking on that responsibility because she thinks he’s doing it to be helpful. if brambleclaw really cared about helping the clan, he wouldnt care that he has to do tasks he doesn’t like. i don’t think brackenfur would be such a sourpuss about it, i think he would take on any responsibility. maybe that makes him boring with no personality, but i don’t mind a background character having no controversial thoughts. hating on brambleclaw can be fun!
i know brambleclaw has been hated on a lot from the fandom, but mostly after omen of the stars, and because he is a terrible partner to squirrelflight. i honestly think he was nice enough in the first three books of the new prophecy! i didn’t care too much for the development of his relationship with squirrelflight, but it was okay! i mean to be honest, so far, none of the romances i have read about have been interesting at all. maybe it’s because they’re cats? but i doubt it, i think that a lot of the characters just are underdeveloped. so the characters i care about are ones that i have nostalgia for and also ones that are discussed on tumblr and people have headcannons that make me think of the characters in a different way.
anyway i hate spottedleaf blah blah blah. i can’t wait for her to tell leafpool to be with crowfeather because starclan needs “the three” to be born and then shame leafpool for doing the very thing she told her to do!! i hate how much leafpool idolises spottedleaf, like i hate her for the whole firestar creeping thing, but u know, honestly that’s not as bad as how awful she’s going to be to leafpool. i wish yellowfang could have been her starclan “mentor” or “guide”. but then again, they did make yellowfang say the most foolish thing ever while she was in starclan (the thing about ashfur’s only fault being that he loved too much) so maybe it’s better that she isn’t in leafpool’s dreams too much. but yellowfang broke the same rule that leafpool did, so maybe (if someone who actually cares would write it) she would have been sympathetic to leafpool rather than shame her. spottedleaf just has no actual connection to leafpool apart from the fact that she creeps on firestar, which makes it so weird that she comes to leafpool in her dreams. if it was yellowfang, it would be because she saw firestar as a second son, and she cares about cinderpelt’s apprentice because she also took on a motherly role with cinderpelt. i just!!! wish that was the case.
if i was a writer, maybe i would do a rewrite of the new prophecy and just kick stupid spottedleaf out of the story. it would probably seem that i have a bias for certain characters though. i would want bluestar and yellowfang to have more uhh “screen time”. although that would probably make it less exciting when they do finally appear. maybe just yellowfang then. although i would also like to hear from cats like whitestorm, lionheart, redtail, stonefur. if i recall, lionheart and redtail have only appeared for firestar’s leader ceremony. and stonefur, i don’t know if he ever has interactions in starclan with his mother and mosskit. i’d like to think that when mistystar finally died they had a family reunion with crookedstar, silverstream, feathertail.
back to leafpool, and the actual contents of the book. i’m happy she finally got her full name! it’s kinda weird when siblings don’t get their names at the same time. plus leafpool has been a great medicine cat even before the big journey to the lake territory. and i love how mothwing was so proud of her. actually i just quite like the medicine cat relationships. they’re all cool and i like seeing it from their perspectives, having interactions with cats from different clans without hostility is nice.
i am wondering how hawkfrost managed to get cats from shadowclan to help him, is it because he is tigerstar’s son and there is still cats in shadowclan that would follow tigerstar were he alive? but why do they care about helping mudclaw? like hawkfrost has some motivation if mudclaw told him he would make him deputy if onewhisker is overthrown. it all seems so silly, and kinda rushed too. like if we compare it to tigerstar trying to overthrow thunderclan and taking control of shadowclan and riverclan, that happened over the course of several books. perhaps hawkfrost and mudclaw overthrowing windclan could have been interesting if it wasn’t squeezed into a couple chapters.
our only hints that this could happen are that squirrelflight, leafpool, and mistyfoot are distrustful of hawkfrost. but only because he is too “ambitious”. and then the rest was mistyfoot straight up telling thunderclan what was happening. i think it could have been interesting for thunderclan and windclan to not be sort of in an alliance for once. i like that they are friendly with each other, but maybe it would have been cool to see the friendship between firestar and onewhisker tested a bit?
i was watching sunnyfall’s trip through time video about this particular book (as i have been doing after each warriors book i’ve been reading) and she brought up that this books main plot points revolve around windclan and the leader/deputy drama. i agree that we should have had some chapters written from his point of view. why does brambleclaw need to be there for tallstar’s death? we could have been seeing it from crowfeather’s point of view. there’s so many interactions with windclan that it really would have benefitted from seeing it in their perspective.
the scene with leafpool and crowfeather at the end of the book was … strange. like those two shadowclan cats, why were they running to thunderclan anyway? and they’re just mysterious unnamed cats, because the writers don’t feel like fleshing out the rest of the clans with real characters. oh and of course they brutally die by snapping their necks, which is supposed to make me feel like, oh my gosh that could have been leafpool if crowfeather didn’t help her! and the confessions of “love” like, all of the intentional romance in these books is so bad. you guys are infatuated with each other you are not in love come on now. it’s very silly.
and i guess squirrelflight and brambleclaw are officially broken up for now because he continues to trust hawkfrost. like even if mudclaw is lying about hawkfrost’s motivations to help him, how does that change the fact that he helped a cat from another clan try to overthrow their leader? what is going on inside brambleclaw’s mind here? squirrelflight is so right for giving up on him at this point. he’s being wilfully ignorant. i mean that’s not what the erins intended him to be, he apparently just trusts his brother after all this? and despite denouncing the actions of his father every chance he has had previously, he didn’t seem to have a problem chatting to him in a dream? i know he doesn’t seem awfully evil when he’s chatting away with his sons, but he also didn’t seem awfully evil, or at all to all of thunderclan when he had literally killed redtail, attempted to kill bluestar, etc. i still remember when fireheart was filling in for bluestar at a gathering and tigerstar was there as shadowclan’s leader, and fireheart decided not to warn the other clans about his actions because “maybe he has changed!”. it’s kinda annoying for characters to be uncharacteristically stupid for the sake of the plot. it takes you out of it and makes you question the authors rather than wonder the motives of the characters.
mudclaw dying to a falling tree made me wonder, how many cats have died to trees throughout the series? off the top of my head i thought of mudclaw, firestar, and longtail. luckily the wiki is extensive enough to have a complete list, which includes micah (i didn’t know of micah because i haven’t read moth flight’s vision yet), mudclaw, firestar, rainwhisker, and longtail. and briarlight was paralysed.

one of my shelves! the super editions are all second hand but who ever owned them previously took good care of their dust jackets so i'm thankful for that! i have all the novella collections save for "a warrior's choice". and i think i have all the graphic novels too! but i haven't read most of the books on this shelf.
i read bluestar's prophecy, crookedstar's promise years ago when i was a young teen. and i re-read firestar's quest last year.

witch hat atelier #2
date started: 21/02/2023 | date started: 22/01/2023
once again, the art absolutely blew me away! like the illustrations remind me of the ink illustrations in children’s novels with the shading done with ink. it obviously has style influence from manga and western comics, but i wonder if kamome shirahama also is trying to evoke a feeling of nostalgia for old ink illustrations in books like “the worst witch”? i would be surprised if it wasn’t her intention, given the setting and story of the book. it definitely, so far at least, doesn’t lean into any anime tropes at all. the characters feel more western, like the characters you expect in this setting.
i love it! that’s not to say i don’t like characters that are written to fit into a more manga/anime type story. but everything about this feels so different from most manga. the art style, characters, story.
i was thinking about how this could possibly be adapted into an anime. i seriously don’t think it could be done by the average anime studio. i would be keen to see it done. but i would only really trust studio ghibli to do it. or it would be cool to see studio ponoc do it. maybe stories about witches could be their “thing”. although i’m not sure what the difference between producing an animated movie vs show is. but i don’t think the digital look of most japanese animation studios would suit this. studio ghibli apparently works digitally, but i think they still have a great look to it, because their colour palettes still look traditional. the think that looks the most digital is the super thin lines, and the shiny hair and eyes. it’s a bit too smooth looking i think and just isn’t to my taste.
i was totally thrown off at the end, with coco being arrested for using forbidden magic. i am actually looking forward to the next volume! actually today, i bought volume 6 and 7 at dymocks! so i have 5 volumes to read in my collection.

warriors: the new prophecy #3: dawn
date started: 21/01/2023 | date finished: 03/02/2023
how are all these cats so rude like, brambleclaw having a go at hawkfrost for not being clan born meanwhile they share a horrible father. any sort of superiority they think they have, they always use it to talk badly of other cats for their circumstances. which like, being born a kittypet, or rogue is not all too bad. firestar and cloudtail turned out fine, russetfur was a rogue, i think there were some bloodclan members and rogues that joined shadowclan.
how can he have respect for firestar, who was born outside of the clans, but also insult other cats for the very same fact.
and almost every cat does it, throughout the entire series.
spottedleaf is here again!!! no more, why can’t it be another medicine cat coming to them in their dreams. yellowfang exists, or bluestar, whitestorm, lionheart, redtail. there’s many thunderclan starclan cats to choose from to send messages to the living, but it’s always spottedleaf because she’s just so nice!
like she is in love with leafpaw and squirrelpaw’s father and interferes with his love life and upsets sandstorm (who barely talks in this book despite her kits taking up the entire pov of the books). something about it being her talking to them is so icky. i think she literally mentions to leafpaw about how they could have been her kits if she wasn’t a medicine cat? it’s so creepy, leave them alone. it should be yellowfang, who literally saw firestar as her son and it would be fitting that she cares for firestar’s kits. oh well!!
and instead of the psychic powers that link squirrelpaw and leafpaw being the way that squirrelpaw finds out where leafpaw is, it’s of course, a dream featuring my least favourite, spottedleaf. get out of here!!!!
graystripe gets captured and brambleclaw orders everyone to run away. immediately after thunderclan’s deputy is catnapped, leafpaw notices how different brambleclaw is “an experienced, confident warrior, calmly issuing commands in spite of the huge danger they were all in”
i guess if i hadn’t read it already i wouldn’t notice how obvious it is that they are hinting at brambleclaw being graystripe’s replacement
is this how squirrelpaw and brambleclaw start to fall out? by her discovering hawkfrost is his half brother and thinking he has evil ambitions like tigerstar? because i know brambleclaw becomes closer with hawkfrost eventually and squirrelpaw must not trust him and encourages brambleclaw to distance himself from hawkfrost? i think that’s how the brambleclaw, squirrelflight, ashfur drama must start. because i don’t remember it, but i’m calling it now from reading the beginning of chapter 11. i hope i can come back and write that i was right about it!
sunnyfall noted that because the writer this time was kate cary rather than cherith baldry, there’s different character dynamics. like mothwing and leafpool not being as close (sad), mothwing and hawkfrost getting along better because hawkfrost is less aggressive, stormfur doesn’t have a crush on squirrelpaw (thank goodness), and leafpaw and squirrelpaw don’t have a psychic connection to each other.
i was sitting here wondering, now what the hell does “a dying warrior will guide the way” mean, a living clan cat will start to die and then show them the way, a starclan cat will come to talk to them? no a shooting star. that makes much more sense but i would have also never guessed it. it’s quite a minor point in the book so i don’t blame myself for not remembering it.
i had forgotten that crowpaw asks tallstar that his warrior name be in memory of feathertail, i like it. he’s lucky that his prefix works with the suffix “feather”. it’s a nice name. although i’m sure the authors did plan his name from the beginning.
i’m sad that stormfur feels like he’s lost everything in the clans that ties him to them. he has lost his mother, sister, father, and even his mentor. i guess his closest relationship left would be mistyfoot. it feels a little weird that everyone related to graystripe has been taken away from the clans. of course i know graystripe comes back later. i don’t even like graystripe that much because he’s hot headed and annoying, but his kits and their relationship to bluestar’s kits and her story are something i really like about the first arc. plus stonefur’s death was horrible and i feel bad that mistyfoot’s family is all gone. like blackclaw is her mate and is mentioned in the allegiances but like, she had kits last arc and none of her kits are mentioned as warriors or apprentices in this book. according to the wiki, reedwhisker is mentioned in moonrise, but won’t appear again until twilight. poor mistyfoot, the rest of her kits don’t live into adulthood and reedwhisker is not even mentioned in books that he’s supposed to be alive in. maybe he’s mentioned in the actual chapters of the books, but there’s too many cats from other clans in this book to remember who’s there and who isn’t.
like throughout the entirety of the journey from the forest to the lake, i obviously know that mousefur is a character, she’s alive, she even has an apprentice. but she isn’t mentioned at all. illustrations to accompany the chapters would be cool, that way, even without being mentioned, you could look at the illustrations and go “ooh that’s mousefur, and her apprentice spiderpaw!” even cloudtail and brightheart aren’t mentioned after they are rescued from the humans.

warriors: the new prophecy #2: moonrise
date started: 03/01/2023 | date finished: 21/01/2023
assuming feathertail has a crush on crowpaw bc she was impressed by his hunting skills
purdy saying “great starclan” despite having no affiliation to the clans
cloudtail being annoying at a clan meeting
wtf does cherith baldry mean when she writes “dog fox”? the fox is part dog? it’s behaviour is particularly dog-like? i kinda hate the parts of the books that feature other species bc the behaviour of them is quite unnatural. not that they get cats correct either haha.
i do like that midnight can communicate with the foxes (and the cats) and it makes other species seem less like mindless animals.
i had totally not remembered most of leafpaw’s interactions with mothwing. they’re a lot closer than i thought. and as usual, leafpaw is always thinking about how beautiful mothwing is and it’s very sweet.
they meet each other outside of medicine cat duties and gatherings a lot, and mothwing seems to not care about the warrior code as long as she can help leafpaw. i love how much she trusts leafpaw, telling her everything. well apart from the whole not believing in starclan thing.
also hawkfrost is so mean to her, he calls her names and is just rude. and she’s still so nice to him. poor girl.
cinderpelt has a lot of sympathy for leafpaw and doesn’t get mad at her for sneaking away with mothwing. she even says that to be a good medicine cat, she must know what rules to break, or something along those lines. she also brought up yellowfang and how good of a medicine cat she was. unlike last book where spottedleaf (who was alive for all of 1/2 of a book) was said to be such a great medicine cat. what even made her so great? i really just don’t like how saint like she’s made out to be while also not really doing anything apart from creeping on firepaw/heart in his dreams. i’m glad yellowfang got praise in this book, she deserves it and it also makes way more sense because of course cinderpelt thinks of yellowfang so fondly, she was her mentor and almost a second mother as well. plus cinderpelt seems to have grown to be a lot like yellowfang with how she communicates, especially to firestar.
parallel between hawkfrost wanting mistyfoot’s position as deputy and tigerclaw wanting to overthrow bluestar
it honestly feels like they were actually trying to set leafpaw and mothwing up as a couple
stormfur is a hypocrite
i do wonder what would have happened if stormfur had sacrificed himself rather than feathertail
i really like leafpaw’s pov
stormfur pov feels the same as brambleclaw pov
graystripe is bad deputy and is easily angered leading him to attack cats from other clans while firestar is trying to be diplomatic and talk to the other clans in peace
warrior apprentice relationships feel a little creepy

warriors: the new prophecy #1: midnight
date started: 08/12/2022 | date finished: 03/01/2023
i like that crowpaw is such an annoying little shit, he’s like an edgy teenager, trying to attack brambleclaw when they’re trespassing on thunderclan territory and being smacked by onewhisker because he’s being a bad boy. and then when he arrives on the new moon to meet the other cats who received the prophecy, he says “what’s going on?” in a high pitch and aggressive voice.
and tawnypelt calls him an undersized specimen lmfao
i was totally not expecting firestar’s behaviour after cinderpelt described the omen she saw of fire and a tiger. he goes into helicopter parent, “i’ll shoot you if you touch my daughter” mode and is kinda abusing his leader position to be unfair to brambleclaw and squirrelpaw. ahh the beginnings of these two cats being brought together is actually really well done though.
i also like that you could tell the erins had already planned for brambleclaw to become deputy/leader because he talks about “being a good leader” in reference to leading the cats to the sun-drown place.
also i’m looking forward to reading about squirrelpaw and leafpaw’s psychic connection once they head out on their journey because it’s something i totally forgot was even a thing. it reminds me of yellowfang’s “power” of feeling the pain of her clanmates.
i almost thought leafpaw wouldn’t give her sister and brambleclaw travelling herbs, because i was expecting squirrelpaw to tell her and ask for help but then i realised that leafpaw will just “know” and track them down to give them the herbs. it was a sweet moment, and brambleclaw noticing the softness that squirrelpaw talks to her sister with was very cute. and then he tells leafpaw that he will take care of her sister, and squirrelpaw, taking offense because she thinks she can take care of herself, challenges his words with like, “no, i’ll take care of you!” hahaha
i’m excited to read the interactions between leafpaw and mothwing! so far, it’s very sweet between them and i will pay closer attention to their interactions on my re-read of the series. the way leafpaw gushes in her head about how beautiful mothwing is, and is so supportive of mothwing and tries to ease her worries about meeting starclan and the expectations of her clan, being a rogue born cat. it’s good that i don’t have super high expectations for warriors books because then i can be pleasantly surprised when there are moments that i really enjoy.
leafpaw is just extremely caring, making the party of medicine cats stop for a rest when she notices cinderpelt limping heavily on their way to the moonstone, making it so cinderpelt doesn’t have to feel bad for her injury. we stan

warriors: graphic novel: tigerstar and sasha
date started: 06/08/2022 | date finished: 15/08/2022
i always knew who mothwing and hawkfrost’s mother was but she wasn’t in the books as far as i know so i didn’t know how she came to meet tigerstar or the timeline or anything about her personality.
i thought she was interesting, she seems like a strong character, well sometimes. she keeps changing her mind about tigerstar. on one hand she thinks he’s horrible and then she doesn’t want her kits to know their father was a bad person and the truth about that. she wants them to look up to their father even though he’s tigerstar. we all know how that turns out with hawkfrost.
i like that sasha doesn’t denounce her twolegs or her status as a kittypet. she keeps her collar and continues to love her twolegs and wants to help the sailor feel better. i wish that these characters actually had an impact on how clan cats see kittypets.
the art style was actually pretty good! you could tell when the illustrator drew twolegs that they were more used to drawing humans, but i thought they stylised the cats pretty well. the designs of the cats didn’t match the descriptions in the books most of the time so that was a little disappointing because it could have been the most aesthetically put together graphic novel (in my opinion)

warriors: graphic novel: the rise of scourge
date started: 01/08/2022 | date finished: 01/08/2022
a very short read, i think it took me about 20 minutes. the end of the book has like 20 pages of promotion for the other books so it was even shorter than i expected.
i quite liked the art style though and i can even see how it would have inspired a lot of artists back in the day because of its anime inspired art style.
from all the content i’ve seen relating to scourge i pretty much knew what would happen but the amvs make it seem much more interesting than it actually is. it was okay, i could have done without reading it but i’m glad to finally have read it and have it in my collection!

warriors: super edition: firestar's quest
date started: 23/07/2022 | date finished: 31/07/2022
i like that the book starts off as pretty much a direct sequel to the darkest hour despite it being published two years after the actual sequel, “midnight”.
it has follow-ups to the battle versus bloodclan and references that sandstorm had helped mistyfoot train stormpaw and featherpaw (now stormfur and feathertail in this book) and they are said to have become good friends after that and sandstorm goes to talk with mistyfoot at the gathering. i just thought that was sweet :)
also some dustpelt sass was unexpected but appreciated. especially because he’s being sassy to firestar who is his leader, i don’t think most cats talk like that to their leaders. firestar got a random vision of skyclan leaving a gathering and he stops walking towards fourtrees and dustpelt just says (well actually he grumbles) “for starclan’s sake, do you have to stop dead like that? any cat would think you’d forgotten the way.”
hehe i just thought it was funnie xD
also i totally forgot that this is the book where longtail loses his vision. i thought he was a warrior for way longer than that. in my memory he still had his vision at least until the power of three. i guess i just forgot. poor boy :(
i was a little disappointed that bluestar was against trying to help skyclan and used the “four trees = four clans” argument again. only the last time she said it, she meant that a clan shouldn’t be driven out of the forest. i do understand a little because there isn’t room for a fifth clan and the clans all end up leaving the forest to go to the lake anyway. and i do think a clan leader leaving their clan for such a long time and potentially not making it back is a bad idea. like in the new prophecy when young warriors/apprentices are sent on a journey it’s a bit more believable.
i do like that skyclan being driven out by the twoleg developments goes right with the story of the series it precedes. even though this book was written after the new prophecy, it does make the story feel more connected somehow. i just like it!
when firestar asks sandstorm to come with him it made me realise that despite being his partner, they have barely talked to each other this book. sandstorm always seems to be the one checking in on him and he’s cheating on his wife with a dead cat kinda. plus the fact that she knows she’s his second choice is really sad. and he just randomly says hey come with me after she confronts him about that and everything is okay now? ugh, and firestar never has to change and be a better cat husband and can still go talk to his egirl on discord woohoo.
skywatcher giving firestar the prophecy about the three was unexpected.
spottedleaf’s presence in this book (and every book) is annoying and mostly doesn’t warrant itself existing. like when she comes to tell them that burdock root can treat rat bites and it causes conflict between firestar and sandstorm. she tells sandstorm that their relationship could never be and that firestar loves her. but after sandstorm can’t hear her, she tells firestar that she wishes things could have been different. like what a big fuck you to that moment and to sandstorm. firestar and spottedleaf need to stop. i’m looking forward to the new povs in the next books and won’t have to deal with firestar anymore haha. also the cats had totally figured out that they needed to take down the leader of the rats but spottedleaf found it necessary to give a dumb prophecy “not many, but one” like thanks but we knew.
i love leafdapple as a name, it’s just so pretty and totally puts an image of her in your head. it’s almost sad that she loses that name when she becomes skyclan’s leader, but i of course support her being leader.
i liked the epilogue just surprising me with firestar going to see sandstorm in the nursery with their two babies. it was a sweet scene.
i’m just looking forward to skyclan’s destiny and when i finally read the new series and skyclan joins the other clans at the lake.

warriors: the prophecies begin #6: the darkest hour
date started: 06/07/2022 | date finished: 19/07/2022
i enjoyed reading firestar receiving his nine lives, well apart from spottedleaf giving him a live of “love” … that’s enough of that. but seeing bluestar, yellowfang, and lionheart all in starclan to talk to firestar was really nice.
darkstripe tried to poison sorrelkit and i dunno, he’s such an embarassing evil sidekick. he fails to poison literal babies, got beat up by stormfur while he was half starved, and got basically scolded by tigerstar for being so pathetic. then he tries to attack firestar in the final battle like a little bitch because tigerstar is dead and he apparently has no thoughts of his own. how charming.
firestar took too damn long to change brightheart’s name from lostface. like you’re not disrespecting starclan when bluestar specifically named her that to spite starclan. also this naming ceremony never happens again (as far as i know) thank goodness because the premise of the ceremony is somewhat ableist because the current elders were almost all renamed to describe a missing body part. i’m glad that the authors decided to change that. although i think later series elders don’t tend to have cool battle scars the way that the original elders did which gave them stories to tell the kits and all that. apart from maybe longtail when he got his eyes scratched out.
firestar finally acts like a decent mentor to bramblepaw and treats him well rather than suspicion, i think firestar not trusting tigerstar’s kits shouldn’t have been as big as it was and should have rather just been an internal struggle from brambleclaw in the new prophecy.
i totally forgot that barley was born in bloodclan, and his and ravenpaw’s relationship is really sweet and it’s cute how ravepaw supports hi and encourages him to tell firestar about scourge and bloodclan.
i found the final part of the book where firestar kills scourge to be a little underwhelming. or perhaps just the build up to this final battle is underwhelming because other than firestar travelling to riverclan to convince leopardstar and blackfoot to join them against bloodclan, the cats “preparing” to battle is ehh.
whitestorm’s death was sad and i wish that we got a description of whitestorm facing off with bone. so we can see how he faught till his last breath to defend the forest and his clan and all that but unfortunately firestar just sees his body almost unrecognisable because his pelt is completely covered in his own blood. and him saying that firestar knows that graystripe is meant to be deputy .. is he really though? he’s nice enough but if whitestorm didn’t die i would never replace him with graystripe.
i think giving longtail deputy would be more interesting. i know they would never do that because you’re supposed to have grown to love firestar and graystripe’s bond throughout the books, but knowing what i do about longtail further in the series and that graystripe basically goes away again in two seconds, he’s not my favourite choice. plus i would like to see firestar and longtail become friends in the end. they’re civil but friends would be nice :)

warriors: the prophecies #5: a dangerous path
date started: 04/07/2022 | date finished: 06/07/2022
fireheart is kinda stupid for not saying anything about tigerclaw at the gathering. like, sure he killed multiple cats from his own clan because of his ambitions and seems to have a personal vendetta against bluestar and fireheart… but maybe now that he’s leader or shadowclan he will put those behaviours behind him!
fireheart seems to not care about the dogs on thunderclan territory. he says like “oh well their twolegs will come and take them home soon” and then obviously that doesn’t happen. and the rest of the book he acts like there’s some unknown evil in the forest with him when it’s so obviously the dogs. plus the prologue of the book literally is from the perspective of the dogs. the dogs being able to talk but only like cavemen is frustrating. i wish they either didn’t talk at all or talked normally.
when fireheart finally tells bluestar about the dogs she decides to blame windclan. i didn’t really like this conflict but i do like that bluestar trusts ravenpaw and says that he’s welcome in thunderclan. i think she said that in the previous book but yeah. i also like that they didn’t make her oblivious and she can tell that the meeting was organised by fireheart. she still has good characterisation until her desth.
bluestar is probably the best part of this book, but it really is hard to read because of how much i miss the old bluestar, but i also like that such an iconic leader has an iconic downfall and death. i think most leaders just die nobly in battle or like crookedstar, they die because they’re old.
whitestorm’s relationship with bluestar this book is really nice to see. the way he comforts her and looks after her is so cute. it’s a shame they didn’t mention that he’s her nephew and that she also took care of him when he was a kit. i guess they didn’t think of that yet.
cloudtail is finally not annoying when he is caring for brightpaw .. or “lostface” as bluestar cruelly names her. but it really changed his character from a pain in fireheart’s ass to awww he’s so sweet to her!

warriors: the prophecies begin #4: rising storm
date started: 02/07/2022 | date started: 03/07/2022
soooo cloudpaw is being an annoying brat still, and fireheart’s solution to this is to yell at him and it never works and yet it’s the only way he disciplines him. i know fireheart is like insecure about being a bad mentor because of cinderpelt and the fact that like himself, cloudpaw was born a kittypet, but like .. he doesn’t do a better job by being an asshole to cloudpaw. he admires cats like bluestar, whitestorm, and lionheart. but he doesn’t try to act like them. even sandstorm thinks he’s too harsh to cloudpaw. but fireheart yells at her too.
then cloudpaw gets abducted by twolegs and sandstorm tries to comfort him because she’s a good friend but instead fireheart yells at her some more and says she never cared about him and that she doesn’t get it because she was born into the clan and fireheart’s only kin in the clan is cloudpaw. i mean .. sandstorm has no relatives apart from after she has kits of her own but that’s just a product of family trees not being made before writing the books than any sort of plot. but also sandstorm never said anything that implies she doesn’t care about cloudpaw, just that he may be happier living with twolegs than in the clan. poor sandstorm, i don’t think she ever is treated as well as she deserves by fireheart/star.
the forest fire happens way earlier than i remember, probably because in my mind yellowfang is so iconic and yet she’s only alive in 4 books. when fireheart returned to the thunderclan camp and finds yellowfang in her den i was so hopeful for a second that maybe maybe i remembered her death wrong and she would survive. her speach to fireheart about him being a son to her was very sweet, although i wish fireheart was better so i would feel he actually deserved that speech from her. maybe he’s not that bad but his whole treatment of sandstorm and “thing” with spottedleaf gives me the yucks. i love cinderpelt but i wish yellowfang could have stayed with her for a little longer, they’re such an iconic pair. ;n;
upon finding yellowfang i’m pretty sure bluestar denounces starclan and their prophecies about fire after a fire burnt their entire territory. which i dunno i didn’t have a problem with. after finding yellowfang x bluestar fan art i’ve paid more attention to their interactions and not that i think this is any sort of hint at romance it just makes me happy that bluestar has always trusted yellowfang and valued her as their medicine cat and losing her was a great loss to bluestar and her clan. of course it’s also because of the loss of their territory and making the clan weaker but she says it right after seeing yellowfang so i’ll read it my way :)
bluestar is starting to be unstable throughout this book but one interaction from her that was actually really sweet was after ravenpaw helps fireheart and sandstorm bring cloudpaw home. she feels bad for not believing what ravenpaw had said about tigerclaw and asks if he should be invited back to thunderclan. also she says that he is always welcome in thunderclan or something like that.
during this book where fireheart had become deputy and was struggling to be deputy so whitestorm basically did everything for him was a little frustrating to see. i know for the sake of fireheart becoming the next clan leader and saving the forest he kinda had to be appointed deputy unless they made whitestorm deputy, he dies, then fireheart, but that would be too similar to the first book where two of bluestar’s deputies died. but given that whitestorm takes care of the clan as well as taking care of bluestar it’s a bit sad to see that she didn’t choose her nephew as deputy. i know it wasn’t written that he was related to her yet but still.
Tumblr media
i really want a physical copy of the book with the fireheart and cloudpaw art. at the moment i only have the one with fireheart and sandstorm. hopefully i can find one floating on ebay somewhere!

warriors: the prophecies begin #3: forest of secrets
date started: 24/06/2022 | date finished: 01/07/2022
i think so far this has been the best warriors book i’ve re-read! it had interesting conflicts and many details i had never remembered! i loved the hints at bluestar being mistyfoot and stonefur’s mother and fireheart finally piecing it together, and i liked the prophecy he received that paralleled silverstream and bluestar.
graystripe was still somewhat frustrating for the first half of the book, he’s back to being friends with fireheart but his treatment of brackenpaw is horrible. i feel so bad for the poor little guy and i’m glad he got made into a warrior so he doesn’t have to feel disappointment every day that graystripe is nowhere to be found.
but i did enjoy graystripe and fireheart’s relationship a lot, they’re really close in this one and their support and friendship for each other feels really genuine and when they parted ways at the end i was a little sad.
what’s more sad though is TRAGIC MUMMIES BLUESTAR AND YELLOWFANG ;n; i love these two just so much. i didn’t know when to expect tigerclaw’s absolute betrayal, but as soon as it hit and it’s immediate effects on bluestar are actually really sad and make me dread reading the next book. i love all of bluestar’s character but i like to see her as the calm and strong leader of thunderclan. seeing her under so much stress is hard.
i also totally forgot about the fact she chooses fireheart as her deputy right after tigerstar’s betrayal. i thought that she chose whitestorm. it’s a little sad that she didn’t but i can understand after losing all her trusted deputies and close friends she maybe wants to protect her sister’s son by not making him deputy?? maybe? or maybe she feels as though fireheart is the only cat she can trust?
