🎧 Without You — Oh Wonder

the smell of sweet syrups and ground coffee beans hung finely in the air. you inhaled deeply - you loved this cafe so much. the dark rosewood floors, the warm, open-bulb lighting; there was such a perfectly cosy atmosphere in this place that no other coffee shop in town could replicate, no matter how hard they seemed to try. you’d take it over a starbucks any day.

you’d managed to snag your favourite spot, an old, but extremely comfy, large grey sofa in the corner of the cafe. as you surveyed the rest of the shop, you noted how it was impressively busy for an ordinary tuesday morning in this small town, and you were glad to see business was doing so well. you felt a twinge of guilt.

no thanks to you. you hadn’t dropped by in quite some time now. not since the breakup. you and sunghoon used to come here for coffee at least once a week back when you were dating… anyway, it felt good to be back, at least.

‘y/n?’ a voice pulled you out of your thoughts.

you turned, eyes widening as you were greeted by sunghoon, standing at the end of the sofa. he looked good - great, even. in just a plain white t-shirt and blue jeans, he still managed, somehow, to look effortlessly put-together, as if he’d just strolled straight off a runway and through the doors of a coffee shop.

‘y/n,’ he repeated your name awkwardly, scratching the back of his neck. ‘hey, it’s been a while... how are you?’

you did your best to push past your shock at seeing him again so unexpectedly, and forced a smile.

‘hoon! i’m doing good! how have you been?’ you gestured for him to sit, and he took the seat opposite you.

‘i’m not bad yeah, been working a lot.’ he set his iced latte down on the table in front of him. ‘no drink?’ he added with a slight eyebrow raise, nodding to the empty coaster in front of you.

‘i’m just waiting on it,’ you replied, tilting your head towards the collection point by the coffee machine at the end of the bar. your smile came a little more naturally now - sunghoon had always been so observant when the two of you were together.

‘you look great,’ he said, honestly. feeling his gaze on you, your cheeks flushed slightly. ‘uh, thanks. you too,’ you admitted after a moment. because he really did. you had to make an effort not to stare; the way his dark hair was styled parted, framing his face quite perfectly.

‘so you’re still working down the office then?’ you cleared your throat, changing the subject. you felt a stab of sympathy, knowing how much of a bore he’d always found his desk job.

‘actually, no,’ he smiled, stirring the ice around in his glass with his straw, causing it to clink softly. ‘i’m actually… modelling now,’ he glanced up and shot you a sheepish grin.

‘be serious,’ you replied, gawking in disbelief. ‘what?! how?’

‘i got cast just, y’know, on the street. some guy invited me to the agency, said i had the face for it,’ you thought he almost looked a little shy as he was telling you this. ‘i thought it was a bust at first, i almost didn’t go along, but… that was a few months ago now. i’ve had some bookings since then.’

you caught yourself with your mouth still hanging open in shock, and shut it quickly. you tried to gain a little composure. ‘who could’ve guessed: hoon the model,’ you teased, and he flashed a grin back at you before poking his tongue between his teeth cheekily.

‘oh, that’s it right there, that’s the face he must’ve been talking about!’ you laughed as sunghoon leaned into your teasing, continuing to make silly faces at you from across the coffee table.

when you’d finally managed to stop laughing, sunghoon smiled to himself, secretly pleased at how relaxed you still seemed around him even after all this time. he took a sip of his drink as he watched you glancing around the space that the two of you had spent so much time in together. he’d be lying if he said that he didn’t miss it. didn’t miss you.

‘and you?’ he prompted. ‘anything new and exciting going on in your life? any contenders to top my news?’

you looked down, suddenly feeling embarrassed. ‘uhm, not really. nothing much has really changed for me, except-’

‘here you go baby,’

a tall, angular young man with slicked back hair leaned down between the two of you, placing two mugs down on the table before sitting beside you on the sofa.

he slung an arm around your shoulder and kissed your cheek.

‘who’s your friend?’ he asked, with what sunghoon thought was an irritatingly charming smile.

‘um, jay, this is hoo- um, sunghoon, he’s an old friend, sunghoon, this is jay, my… boyfriend,’ you bit your lip hard, watching sunghoon’s expression carefully as you relayed this information to him.

for just a split second, you thought you saw hurt flash across his eyes. but then it was gone. he shook jay’s hand when it was offered, before promptly excusing himself. as he got up to leave, you caught his eye, and for just a moment he gave you a small, sad smile. and then he was gone, leaving you staring holes into his back as he exited the coffee shop.

‘swear i’ve seen him somewhere before,’ jay muttered, stirring a spoon around idly in his mug.

‘mm, he’s just got one of those faces,’ you murmured quietly.

a/n okay okay so hear me out: i have half a mind to make this into like a longer series, maybe a two/threeshot with slightly more action…? so if you’d be interested in that then let me know,,! ;)

‘aren’t i the one who’s supposed to be feeling nervous about this?’ said jay with a wry smile, keeping his eyes fixed on the road ahead. you glanced over at him, taking in his calm expression and marvelling at his ability to remain so composed given the circumstances. you, on the other hand, couldn’t help yourself from fidgeting restlessly in the passenger seat. jay placed a hand on your knee gently to still it.

‘love, it’s going to be fine, i promise,’ he shot you a reassuring smile, which you attempted to return weakly. ‘mums always love me anyway,’ he added with a wink, hoping to get you to laugh, but right now you were too preoccupied to play along.

‘yeah, it’s just…’ you chewed at your thumbnail, staring out the window. ‘i don’t know. i’ve never brought a boyfriend back home before. like, ever. and the whole family is going to be there.’ you sighed, slumping against the headrest.

jay smiled. ‘try not to worry. i promise it’s going to be fine. i for one am looking forward to meeting your folks.’ he reached for your hand and gave it a small squeeze.

once you arrived at your parents’ place, you weren’t even sure what you had been worrying about the whole time. as expected, jay had been a gentleman from the moment he stepped through the door, shaking your father’s hand, and greeting your mother politely before passing her the bottle of wine he’d brought up with him. he had charmed every last one of your aunts, who looked on impressed as he helped to lay the table and plate up lunch. your teenage cousins had giggled and whispered to each other behind their hands, eyes darting over at him all throughout the meal.

after he’d finished helping clear up all the dishes, he finally came to join you in the family room. it took all of thirty seconds for him to spot the cabinet of baby pictures and trinkets that sat on the mantelpiece, and he approached eagerly to watch you grow up through photographs.

‘this one was when we visited the states - lord, going on twelve years ago now,’ your dad passed a small wooden picture frame over to jay. ‘wasn’t (s)he cute, eh?’

jay nodded, smiling. ‘very,’

later in the evening, you’d watched from the sofa as he sat on the rug with your little cousin, who was enthusiastically presenting jay with all of her new toys. he received each one with interest, his face animated, eyes widening and giving little gasps as she explained them all to him in great detail. the way he smiled sweetly down at her made your heart ache just a little. when she had finally shown jay every last little stuffed animal, she turned to him, all of a sudden looking very serious.

‘are you and y/n in love??’ she demanded abruptly.

jay gave a little laugh, tousling her hair affectionately. then he looked up at you, softly. ‘yeah. we are,’ he replied.

it felt oddly comforting to be back in your childhood bedroom again with jay by your side, the glow-in-the-dark stars on your ceiling providing a small fluorescent glow in the otherwise complete darkness. you rested your head again his chest and sighed deeply. the long day of travelling and socialising had taken it out of you both completely; you were exhausted.

‘your family are nice,’ jay mumbled after a while.

‘yeah,’ you said quietly. ‘they think you’re nice,’ you added. ‘i think you’re nice,’ you told him on top of that, wrapping your arms around his waist snugly and hugging him to you.

‘is that so?’ you could hear the smile in his voice.

‘yeah,’ you nuzzled into his chest. ‘the nicest.’

.❦.

the following morning, the two of you stood by the front door saying your goodbyes to your parents. as jay hugged your mother farewell, your dad gave you a kiss on the cheek, before nodding over at jay. ‘he’s a keeper, this one,’ he winked.

jay held your hand all the way from the door to the car, where he opened up the passenger side for you, but before you could get in, he pulled you close to him suddenly, catching you so off guard that you blushed furiously.

‘i love you,’ he said quietly, his nose brushing your own. you moved to say it back, but his lips were pressed to yours before you’d even got the chance.

as you surveyed the sea of notes and past papers that were spread out in front of you over your unmade bed, your heart sank in your chest.

still so far to go.

rubbing your temples in a bid to ease your rising headache, there came a knock at your dorm door.

‘come in,’ your voice trembled a little involuntarily.

you watched as jake let himself in, closing the door gently behind him before turning to face you.

god he was a sight for sore eyes.

he looked like a dream just stood there in front of you in his sweatshirt and jeans, hair a dark ruffled mess, his eyes… full of concern.

you watched as he took in your appearance; you had dark circles under your eyes, your face was grey. you’d done your best to hide your weak frame in one of his oversized hoodies, but by the look on his face you could tell it hadn’t worked.

‘baby, i’m worried about you,’ he said softly. ‘your flatmates say you’ve hardly left your room all week,’ he pushed some papers aside and sat down next to you on the bed. as you looked up at him to meet his gaze, you could just feel how tired your eyes must look to him right now. you thought you might cry when you saw his face so full of worry as he watched you, soft brown eyes not leaving your face for even a moment.

‘you’re not eating again, aren’t you?’

the question fell over you like a wave; you hadn’t prepared yourself for him to be so straightforward with you. all of a sudden you couldn’t hold it in any longer, and hot tears came rushing down your cheeks. alarmed, jake pulled you into him and wrapped his arms round you tightly. as you buried you face into his chest, breathing in his comforting scent, wracking sobs took over your entire body.

‘shhh, oh baby,’ jake’s voice a near whisper as he kissed the top of your head. ‘please tell me what’s wrong?’

‘i’m sorry,’ you sobbed quietly, your entire body still shaking. ‘i’m really sorry i- i’ve been so stressed. i’m just so stressed all the time what with finals coming up and when i’m stressed i get this knot in my stomach, it makes me feel sick, and i- i just can’t.’

jake stroked your hair gently as he held you to him. ‘it’s okay baby, you’re gonna be just fine,’ he paused, thinking. ‘but you gotta eat.’

‘i know,’ your voice came small, barely audible. slightly calmer now, you pulled away a little and met his eyes. ‘i know, jake.’

he reached out a hand to stroke your cheek lightly. ‘okay here’s what’s going to happen,’ he said decisively. ‘i’m gonna go make us some pasta, and we’re gonna watch a movie, okay angel? all of this can wait til tomorrow. you need a break,’ he leaned in, bringing his lips to yours in the gentlest kiss. relief flooded over you as you kissed him back softly, feeling the tension within you melting away.

‘thank you,’ you whispered.

he nodded with a small smile, and started gathering all the papers up from the bed, placing them in a neat pile on your desk. ‘i’m going to be here to take care of you, but you gotta start taking care of yourself, too.’ he leaned down and placed a firm kiss on the top of your head. you smiled gratefully.

‘i really love you jake,’ you whispered.

‘i love you so much, angel,’ he replied.

Heeseung

You had recently become the newest member of Enhypen, a dream come true that came with its fair share of excitement and nerves. Today marked your first public appearance since the announcement, and it was a significant one – the group's departure to Europe for international schedules.

As you all gathered at Incheon Airport, you couldn't help but feel a flutter of anxiety in your chest. The other members seemed experienced and at ease, but you were still adjusting to the newfound attention and responsibilities that came with being part of the group.

Heeseung, perceptive as ever, noticed your apprehension. He approached you with a warm smile and a reassuring pat on the back. "Hey, Y/N, don't worry. We've got your back. We're in this together."

His words were like a lifeline, grounding you and easing some of your anxiety. You nodded gratefully and found comfort in his presence as you walked toward the airport entrance, where fans had gathered to see you all off.

As you approached the fans, you noticed the mixed reactions in the crowd. Some were cheering and excitedly waving banners with your name, welcoming you with open arms into the Enhypen family. However, there were also a few skeptical or unsure faces, as your addition to the group had been a recent and surprising announcement.

The mixed reception made your heart race, and you felt a wave of self-doubt wash over you. But Heeseung held your hand discreetly and gave it a reassuring squeeze, as if to say, "You've got this."

As you stepped out of the waiting room. The departure gates were surrounded by a myriad of shops and restaurants, and the promise of exploration filled the air.

After your delightful meal, you decided to explore the Lotte Duty Free shops, which were like a traveler's paradise. The shelves were filled with an array of luxury goods, from perfumes to chocolates to designer accessories.

You both tried on sunglasses and sampled exotic chocolates, laughing as you posed in front of the store's mirrors. The airport's unique charm was not lost on you, and you were genuinely enjoying every moment of it.

In your wanderings, fellow travelers and fans recognized you and Jake, taking discreet photos and videos to capture your travel-loving spirits. The images quickly found their way onto social media, accompanied by comments like:

As luck would have it, you were both seated together in the first-class section of the plane, where the seats were more like cozy beds, and the atmosphere was luxurious. Instead of dreading the long hours ahead, you and Sunghoon saw it as an opportunity to have some fun.

The two of you reclined in your spacious seats, adjusting the personal screens and exploring the range of in-flight entertainment. You exchanged playful banter and shared a few laughs as you browsed through the movie selection, discussing which films to watch during the flight.

Meanwhile the rest of the members were trying to make themselves comfortable. They couldn't help but glance over to you and Sunghoon.

"Heh, look at those two," Jay remarked with a hint of envy in his voice. "They're acting like they're on vacation!"

Heeseung chuckled, nodding in agreement. "They sure look comfortable."

It was a busy morning at the airport, and Enhypen had an international flight to catch for their next destination. The members had gathered outside the airport, ready and punctual, except for you, Y/N, and Sunoo.

Heeseung couldn't help but glance at his watch repeatedly, his anxiety mounting. "Where are they? The flight's about to leave!"

Jay tried to stay calm, but he couldn't hide his frustration. "We told them to meet us here on time. This is not like them."

Just when it seemed like you and Sunoo had made the ultimate fashion sacrifice by missing the flight, the van stops at the airport entrance suddenly drawing the attention of everyone present.

There you both were, striding out confidently, as if you had just stepped off a fashion runway. Sunoo wore a chic ensemble that oozed sophistication, while you rocked an edgy yet trendy look that was impossible to ignore. It was clear that you had put thought and effort into every detail of your outfits.

The fans and the members were left in awe at your fashionable entrance. Camera phones were pulled out and photos were snapped left and right. Comments and compliments filled the air:

"Y/N and Sunoo turning the airport into their personal runway!"

"Wow, their fashion game is on point."

"They look like they just stepped out of a magazine!"

With the attention of everyone firmly on you and Sunoo, you joined the rest of the members, apologizing for your tardiness. While the flight might have been delayed by a few minutes, the unforgettable fashion show that you and Sunoo had put on made it a moment that fans and the group would remember for a long time.

Jungwon

The airport layover was a familiar part of your hectic schedule, but this time, it came with an unexpected twist. As the members of Enhypen scattered to explore the terminal during your break, you, Y/N, and Jungwon, who usually took on the role of keeping the group together, found yourselves struggling to keep everyone in close proximity.

It started with Heeseung's fascination with the duty-free shops, where he lost track of time browsing luxury items. Then Sunghoon was captivated by a local artwork exhibit, and Jake disappeared into a bookstore. The members were off on their own adventures, and you and Jungwon were left feeling like you were herding cats.

You exchanged exasperated glances, both of you trying to keep your composure. "This is usually our job," Jungwon chuckled, shaking his head.

You laughed in agreement. "I know, right? We're the ones who are supposed to keep everyone together!"

Despite the frustration, you both couldn't help but find the situation amusing. It was a rare moment when the members were allowed to explore freely during a layover, and they were clearly enjoying their newfound freedom.

After a while, you and Jungwon decided to let go of the responsibility. "Let's just trust the managers to handle this for now," Jungwon suggested.

You nodded, feeling relieved to be free of the task. "Agreed. Let's make the most of our time."

Eventually, the managers rounded up the members, who returned to the designated meeting point with smiles and stories from their individual adventures. It might have been a bit chaotic, but the layover had allowed everyone to unwind and experience a taste of freedom before the next leg of the journey.

Ni-Ki

The waiting area at the airport was filled with the members and they were chatting and laughing, eager for their upcoming flight. However, amidst the excitement, you, Y/N, couldn't help but notice Ni-Ki's constant struggle to keep his head from falling as he battled against sleep.

Ni-Ki's eyes drooped, and his head would start to nod, only for him to jolt awake, embarrassed by the sudden loss of control. The other members couldn't contain their laughter, and some even started filming his struggle.

"Ni-Ki, you're a walking bobblehead!" Jay teased, holding back his laughter.

Sunghoon chimed in, "Someone get this guy a neck pillow!"

As the teasing continued, you couldn't help but feel a sense of empathy for Ni-Ki. Knowing how tiring the schedules could be, you decided to step in and help him get some rest before the flight.

"Hey, Ni-Ki," you called softly, trying not to startle him.

Ni-Ki turned to you, his eyes heavy with exhaustion. "Yeah?"

"Why don't you lean on me and get some rest?" you suggested.

Ni-Ki hesitated but eventually placed his head on your lap, and you gently arranged a jacket to provide some support for his head. He seemed grateful for the comfort and closed his eyes, already beginning to drift off.

As Ni-Ki started to relax, you noticed the other members giving you curious glances. Sunghoon couldn't resist teasing, "Y/N, I didn't know you were a professional sleep therapist."

You chuckled, not missing a beat. "Well, someone has to take care of our sleepy maknae."

Ni-Ki, now half-awake and half-asleep, decided to join in the teasing. "Yeah, you guys aren't lucky. Y/N only treats me this way because I'm her favorite."

The members burst into laughter, playfully protesting Ni-Ki's claim. It was all in good fun, and the atmosphere was light-hearted.
