Music I like - from my vinyl collection
PHILIP GLASS - SONGS FROM THE TRILOGY
(The minimalist beauty of contemporary opera)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Philip Morris Glass - born January 31, 1937 - Baltimore
Along with Steve Reich, Terry Riley, John Adams and Michael Nyman, he is one of the minimalist composers. However, he himself prefers the term music with repetitive structures to the term minimalism.
He is the last of the "classical" representatives of the American minimalist school. Since the 1970s, he has been using elements in his compositions, such as ostinato repetition of simultaneously sounding motifs of different lengths, creating a polyrhythmic structure or the additive principle – the gradual lengthening or shortening of phrases, changing the rhythmic and melodic content.
Early period compositions include Music in Fifths, Music in Similar Motion, Music With Changing Parts, Music In Twelve Parts, Northstar, the opera Einstein on the Beach, etc. His later works include chamber music, orchestral music, vocal music, opera, stage music and film music.

Music I like - from my vinyl collection -
R.E.M. - my passion since from the early 1990s
"Find The River"
(from the best-selling album by R.E.M. from 1992)
I map R.E.M.'s music throughout their career. Each of their periods was musically a little different, but always beneficial in some way.
I also appreciate their involvement in various projects. I only added basic information about R.E.M. Their music doesn't need much introduction.
Gradually, I collected almost all of their recordings and visits to their concerts were inspiring for me.
This song and video are among my favorites.
Hey now, little speedyhead The read on the speedmeter says You have to go to task in the city Where people drown and people serve Don't be shy, you're just dessert Is only just light years to go
Me, my thoughts are flower strewn With ocean storm, bayberry moon I have got to leave to find my way Watch the road and memorize This life that pass before my eyes And nothing is going my way
The ocean is the river's goal A need to leave the water knows We're closer now than light years to go
I have got to find the river Bergamot and vetiver Run through my head and fall away Leave the road and memorize This life that pass before my eyes And nothing is going my way
There's no one left to take the lead But I tell you and you can see We're closer now than light years to go Pick up here and chase the ride The river empties to the tide Fall into the ocean
The river to the ocean goes A fortune for the undertow None of this is going my way There is nothing left to throw Of ginger, lemon, indigo Coriander stem and rose of hay
Strength and courage overrides The privileged and weary eyes Of river poet search naïveté Pick up here and chase the ride The river empties to the tide All of this is coming your way

R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and vocalist Michael Stipe. R.E.M. is one of the first alternative rock bands that reached a wide spectrum of listeners. Their first single "Radio Free Europe" was released in 198 on the Hib-Tone label. This was followed in 1982 by the Chronic Town EP on I.R.S. Records and the album Murmur in 1983, which received a very positive response from music critics. In the following years, R.E.M. with subsequent albums he achieved success in the alternative scene. They broke into the mainstream in 1987 with the hit "The One I Love" and a year later signed to Warner Bros. Records.
In the early 1990s, R.E.M., often referred to as the pioneers of alternative rock at the time, released the highly successful albums Out of Time (1991) and Automatic for the People (1992), whose sound differed from the band's previous albums. With Monster (1994), R.E.M. returned to a more rock sound and after a six-year hiatus, they went on tour, which was marred by the band's members' health problems. In 1997, R.E.M. extended its contract with Warner Bros. for a then-record $80 million. The following year, drummer Bill Berry left the band for personal reasons, and the band has been a three-piece ever since.
R.E.M. continued to play and release albums in the first decade of the 21st century, but they were met with mixed reactions from critics and fans. The band is also actively involved in various political and social movements. In 2007, R.E.M. was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
History
Grouping: 1980–1981
Michael Stipe (left) and Peter Buck (right) in Belgium in 1985
In January 1980, Michael Stipe and Peter Buck met at the record store where Buck worked. They both found that they liked similar music, namely punk rock and protopunk represented by artists such as Patti Smith, Television, and The Velvet Underground. Stipe later said, "We found out that I was buying records that [Buck] was keeping for himself." Stipe and Buck later met University of Georgia students Mike Mills and Bill Berry, who had been in a band together since high school, at a party. The quartet agreed to write a few songs together. Stipe later noted that there was no grand plan or attempt to break through behind it. The unnamed band rehearsed for several months before performing at a friend's birthday party at an Episcopalian church on April 5, 1980. After considering names such as "Twisted Kites", "Cans of Piss", or "Negro Wives", the band eventually named themselves R.E.M. This name came about when Stipe accidentally stuck his finger in the dictionary for this abbreviation.
The members left the school to devote themselves fully to the band. Their manager was Jefferson Holt, a record store owner, who was so impressed with the band and their performance in his hometown of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, that he moved to Athens to be with them. The success of R.E.M. in Athens and the surrounding area was almost immediate. More and more people began to attend the concerts, which led to a negative attitude of many local musicians. Over the next year and a half, the band toured the southern United States. However, touring at the time was very modest, the band traveled in an old van driven by Holt, and the band members could only spend two dollars a day on food. During the summer of 1981, R.E.M. recorded their first single, "Radio Free Europe", at Mitch Easter's studio in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. "Radio Free Europe" was released by the local independent label Hib-Tone in a print run of 1,000 copies, which sold out almost immediately. Although it became a scarce commodity, critics lavished praise on it. The New York Times named it one of the top 10 singles of the year, and Village Choice named it the single of 1981.
