An incredibly rare sighting of Orca in the tropical waters of Kume Island, Okinawa. The last known sightings in the area was 9 years ago!
This encounter consisted of 7 whales that remained in the same relative area for 3 hours. Some of them breached and did some chin-slapping.

Hi!
Yes there is an ID Guide for the orca populations of Hokkaido, Japan here- it is almost 10 years old now, but as far as I know they have not been extensively studied. There is also a “Meet the Whales” post series we during the beginnings of this blog.

Video
シャチ・スーパーーポッド 2013.07.01
Footage of a Japanese Orca “super pod” encounter off the Rausu coast of Hokkaido, by Masayuki Miyamoto.
This appears to show 20-30 individuals (some residents?), the description says others were approaching in 3 or 4 nearby patches of water totaling a gathering of about 100 individuals.
Documentation of gatherings like this for the Japanese population is extremely rare.
