Regina George Character Analysis
Analysis: For my character analysis I decided to use the character from my monologue Regina George. This piece was taken from the early 2000s move Mean Girls. In the movie Regina is one of the lead roles considering she is the head of her high schools “mean girl clique”. She grew up extremely wealthy which might be where she got her sense of manipulative, control and superiority. She uses other people's insecurities and her sex appeal to control others and remain her queen bee status. The movie follows a girl named Cathy who moved to Illinois from South Africa and is brought in to the mean girls clique by Regina. The entire move is basically Regina humiliating Cathy and the rest of her friends remain in their minds “superior” but after being hit by a bus in the last scene of the movie she reevaluates her life and then joins the lacrosse team as a way to get out her internalized anger.
Score: *Start looking at the audience* Let me tell you something about Janis Ian.
We were best friends in middle school. I know right, it’s sooo embarrassing.
I don’t even… whatever. /
*Talking faster than normal speed* So then in eighth grade I started going out with my first boyfriend Kyle, who was totally gorgeous but then he moved to Indiana. And Janis was like, weirdly jealous of him. Like if I would blow her off to hang out with Kyle, she’d be like Why didn’t you call me back?! And I’d be like, Uh, why are you so obsessed with me? /
*Sigh* So then for my birthday party, which was an all girls pool party, I was like, *raise voice* Janyce I can’t invite you because I think you’re a lesbian. I mean, I couldn’t have a lesbian at my party! There were going to be girls there in their bathing suits! I mean right, she was a lesbian! /
*Lower voice, calmer tone*So then her mom called my mom and started yelling at her and it was so retarded and then she dropped out of school because no one would talk to her and she came back in the fall for high school and her hair was all cut off and she was totally weird and now I guess she’s on crack. /
*Turn to side change to nice tone* Oh my God! I love your skirt, where did you get it? /
*Face towards the front* It’s fucking hideous.
Character Arc: Before this scene Regina sees Caty, who just started hanging out with the mean girls talking to Janis Ian who is very low on the social totem pole at their school. To protect her image, in the beginning of the monologue she immediately tells Caty that Janis is weird and she should not be scene talking to her. She uses various stories from their past in an attempt to manipulate Caty into thinking that Janis is some crazy weird girl. After explaining it's now clear why Janis is an outsider. But then someone walks past Regina in a skirt that she compliments but immediately takes away when she turns around to show just how popular and mean she is.I wouldn’t say that Regina changed during this monologue but it definitely explains to the audience what type of person she is in just a few sentences.
Character objectives: During the first few lines when Regina is expressing how her friendship with Janice is embarrassing this is her attempt at brainwashing Caty to bully Janis like she does. She uses the story’s from middle school to solidify that Janis is the issue deflecting from her controlling tendencies. And in the end she fake compliments a girl's skirt in front of Katy to prove her superiority and mean girl status.

Section 4
For my observation of life scenes I decided to observe people during society recruitment. It was pretty easy because since this year for recruitment im apart of a sorority so the whole week I observed and judged people. There was one person I focused on specifically for this assignment but also form other people I picked up tons of other human behaviors. Most of the sophomores and juniors I talked to had way more relaxed posture and sat more openly as opposed to the freshman who usually crossed their arms or legs seeming closed off. The person that I decided to focus on is a freshman (who’s now my little) named Cambrie. She stood very tall and confident but I noticed on sisterhood day (a day where you talk about friendships within the sorority). She seemed more nervous, she played with her hair a lot and her voice seemed to lower. Immediately when noticing that and thinking of this assignment I realized that she probably didn’t have the best history with female friendship. This makes me think she might have been bullied in school or maybe had a very dramatic group of friends. Also I’m assuming since she went to a private school in Huntington Beach, she's most likely rich, which could cause people to be jealous of her. For the bigger picture, basically I imagine her being mistreated and having a bad high school experience because of her peers.

I liked how zach’s character had a soft spot for his mother
My Monolouge
So due to being sick, having the worst work schedule and my grandmother being sick I only got to do my monologue in class 2 times. But regardless I think my biggest problem was memorization and being comfortable in the character, alongside with being an awful actress but I think what I did do well was project my voice and look into the audience.
My Scene
For my Scene I worked with Jessy and I think that at first our scene was pretty awkward but It ended up being way more natural. I think what we struggled with most was the incorporation of our props and timing but it ended up being way more developed than the first time we did it.

Essay 1:
https://howlround.com/parents-color-and-need-anti-racist-theatre-practices
This essay is about the author, Nicole Brewers experience of racism in the primary education theatre systems. Theatre is a very expensive hobby for children to take up, which leaves some parents unable to pay for it. Brewers says that most theatres say they are “child friendly” but that excludes people who cannot afford it. She states that since poc, especially women, make significantly less than white men which already puts poc at a disadvantage because their parents make less money. The essay mostly explains the causes behind structural racism and how it can affect young kids in theatre.
Essay 2:
https://howlround.com/does-it-pay
This essay discusses something that is fairly interesting to me which is college internships. In our capitalist society in the United States doing an internship is very crucial when trying to get employed in your field later. The problem with this is that most internships are unpaid. The author of this essay, Bridin Clements, states that in the list of theatre internships in New York City there about 139 but only five of those are paid. This puts students who aren’t rich at a disadvantage because this leaves them without a paying job for a substantial amount of time. This essay mostly focuses on the economic discrimination entering the work force.
Essay 3:
https://howlround.com/notes-making-theatre-dark
Ezra Brain, the author of this essay, works for “This is not a Theatre Company” theatre company and in mid October the had a showing of their own play called Theatre in the Dark: Carpe Diem. This play was especially interesting because the viewers came into the space blindfolded and were asked to eat and taste a variety of food and smells. I’m also taking THEA 120 and we discussed different types of theatre including site specific and experimental theatre. This is a great example of both of those and this article discusses the history of these types of theatre and the audience responses.
Essay 4:
https://howlround.com/what-our-new-plays-really-look
This essay is a study conducted by the author Michael Botvinick about diversity in theatre. In the past, like everything else, in America theatre was mostly white behind the scenes and on stage. Still today, according to the article most playwrights are white, but most are women and between the ages of 26-40. On stage has become slightly more diverse but not as good as it could be. Over half of playwrights purposely write in black characters and half of most plays have black actors, but for other races the percentage is far lower. This essay mostly focuses on the diversity in theatre and how it is changing today.

Week 1
The Affairs at Meddlers Top— Richard Coleman
This play takes place in the early 20th century and  is about a man named Sir Hector Croquet who decides to hold a tennis match in his town called Meddlers Top. He invites many important people to this event but at the same time other people are planning on committing a crime such as theft and much worse. It seems like there would need to be about 4 different sets for this play like Dining room, bedroom area, and 2 outside areas. Overall though I didn’t get all of the jokes I still thought that it was funny.
Week 2
Bill— Janice Sampson
This play is super interesting because its like 5 different plays that all add up to one big. It follows five different people who are introduced separately but then a work out routine brings them together. Because there are 5 different characters living their individual lives in the first act, many sets would be necessary. I think this play would be difficult to pull off (probably not for SDSU) but I think that this play is hilarious as explicit as it is.
Week 3
A Brief Encounter with Murder— Peter John Cooper
This is a holiday story but at the same time a murder mystery. It begins when a mother goes missing with a fisherman and a fat catholic priest is dead in the house and people are trying to put together the pieces. This would be a very simple play to put on I think there seems to only be one setting which is a living room.I think that this play was intended to be a comedy but it was just too much for my liking.
Week 4
Chip Off the Block— Liz Dobson
This play follows a girl named Katie who has never met her father. She then gets a TV programming channel to help her find him, but it becomes way more complicated and affects people outside of her immediate family. This play acting wise I feel like would be hard to put on because the writing is so good and I just feel like It would be hard to act, but setting wise its only in a dining room/ kitchen section of a house. Overall, it was easy to read and the writing was amazing, I also loved the plot.
Week 5
The Amazing America Road Trip — Rob Roznwski
After the 1960 presidential election a family has lost all faith in the United States so they decide to take a road trip across the country. During this trip they meet many different types of people which helps restore their faith in the country. This play would be very hard to put on because the sets are all different places across the country but acting wise I think it's more than achievable. Since the play is based on the 1960s i9n my opinion it’s very dated but I still found a few jokes funny.
Week 6
Angel of Happiness— David Pemberton
The main character, Oliver, has an extreme panic attack and a man named Angelo helped him but now Oliver depends on him for mostly all of his life advice. Angelo ends up manipulating and him and even tries to break up his family. I honestly don’t remember much about the setting but I’m pretty sure it was outside. Overall I think that this play was fine but not super exciting.
Week 7
Any Colour but Red— David Pemberton
A couple named Jim and Jandi have an open house with intentions of selling their house there is a mix up with the listing so one pretty sketchy people with weird questions showed up to the house. But the next day when Jim and Jandi return to their home it's a crime scene. The only setting area seems to be a kitchen could be easily built and the writing is amazing with a very good plot. I really enjoy this play and I’m pretty sure its my favorite one I’ve read yet
Week 8
‘A Day in the Life’— Gary Diamond and Ray Lawrence
After the passing of their moms remarried husband a family gets together to check the will of their late step dad who they were not too fond of. When they see the will they are very surprised. The setting seems to only be in a family room within a house. This is a British play which makes the comedy a little bit harder for me to understand but I still thought it was super funny and relatable, It seemed like something thats very normal nowadays in my opinion.
Week 9
A Fairy tale adventure— Sophia Holder
In this play is a collision of many classic tales such as Hansel and Gretel, and Snow White. But in this version the Wicked Witch turns all of the existing fairy tales ending so that evil will always win. So the other characters have to work together to save the stories. This would for sure be a hard production since this is a fairytale. I’m not a huge fan or fairytales so I didn’t really enjoy it but I thought the mixing up with the characters was cool.
Week 10
Family Spirit— Pat Wollaston
When a man named Arthur dies he meets his guardian angel named simon who informs him to get past just being a ghost in his house, he has to be “assessed”. But of course with that comes complications. The only location for the play seems to be Arthurs old house which means basically just his bedroom or living room. Overall I thought that this play was interesting and kind of reminds me of a black mirror episode I really enjoy.
Week 11
Handstands for You— Adam Exton
This play starts off with a boy named Billy and a girl named Gremma who are best friends but she then moves away. Flash forward Billy is 12 and has a new best friend named Ronald who has leukemia. But then Gremma moves back and they all have to find a way to be friends with each other efficiently now that their older. This seems like it would be an easy play for a school like SDSU to put on considering there’s only about two different settings. Overall I think that this play was very good but for a younger audience.
Week 12
The Greatest Form of Flattery— Amy Sutton
In this play Brendon is a failing artist who is totally embarrassed to see someone he went to artist with. And this guy is about to get very rich and famous off of a stolen piece. So Brendon decides to steal the art piece which makes things very interesting. I liked this play a lot because it was only one act, so it felt like watching a movie or tv episode when I read it. Setting wise this would be a complicated production but with the right actors, this could actually be a really funny play, I really enjoyed reading it.
Week 13
The Odd Couple (female version)— Neil Simon
This play is an adaptation of the show The Odd Couple I’m pretty sure (which was an all male cast) But in this play its dysfunctional group of older girlfriends hanging out and playing a boardgame. But one of their friends friends threatens to kill herself which spices things up. This play only takes place in a living room so It would be an easy set but the play is really funny and I think a lot of the jokes would be hard to pull off especially now, hence this play is based in the 80s.
Week 14
Lucky Stiff— Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens
This play is a musical about a shoeman who leads a very boring life but unexpectedly his uncle who died wishes to travel throughout Europe, so Harry the shoeman is basically dragging is dead uncle throughout Europe. This would be a big production since its a musical and there would be many different settings and costumes but I still think It would be very achievable for a school like SDSU. Overall I thought It was hilarious.
