Antique Box Signs / Labels
I decided to look at old Box Labels aswell as antique shopfront store-fronts as my piece sits in an old crate
This could be a crate the killer has used to stash the items he later leaves behind with his victims or as old evidence that’s been gathered by the police as the, These were helpful for gathering ideas to design a label for the crate I’m using, I want the crate to be old and weathered but not as old as the actual pieces as they seem more like pieces from an archeological dig site.

Final Mask & Netsuke Outcomes
This is near the finishing stage of my project I’d painted my miniature clay trials as Netsuke that my hypothetical killer would leave behind with his victims
All had been painted with under layers and then there base layer aswell with being detailed with scratches, blood splatters aswell as moss similarly to the main mask piece this is to show that they’re apart of a set, I personally feel like blue Netsuke has the best paintwork aswell as overall design, I feel like I could’ve made the horns & teeth darker showing more age however I’m happy with the outcomes
The next stage will be to Photograph my pieces properly in scenes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided to quickly take some photos of how the scenery might look with the Crate aswell as the Props I’d made this isn’t the final set of photos just a quick mock-up of the idea.

Life and Death in Hackney 1999-2001 / Tom Hunter
Life & Death in Hackney is a series of photographs that show the melancholic beauty out of the post-industrial decay where the wild buddleia swell as overgrowth and fauna took root and bloomed around the crumbling post-industrial rubble and buildings.
Each photo shows the somewhat abandoned areas that became the epicentre of the new rave scene within the early 90’s which is important to his work as it tells the story of a girl who succumb and became victim to an old canal of the post industrial area. During this time the old print factories, warehouses and workshops became the playground of a disenchanted generation swell as a host for natural fauna and wildlife mixing them with beautiful contrast.
this is good research for my project as id wanted to incorporate ironic photography showing something ‘old fashioned / ancient’ placed in a modern setting this would work well with the other ironic theme of my project that include killers duality in which behind something beautiful is something sinister.
this was useful his photography is themed around death and the story of it.

Horror Movie Masks / 21 scariest horror masks
Link -
https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/top-21-scariest-horror-movie-masks/
Horror movie List - ( Creep, Saw, The Abominable Dr. Philbes, You’re Next, Stage Fright, Smiley, Valentine, Behind The Mask, Satan’s Little Helper, Demons, Phantom of Paradise, Slashers, The Purge, Halloween, Laid to Rest, Black Sunday, Donnie Darko, Friday 13th, Scream, The Texas Chainsaw massacre ).
All these movies use or have masks as props or costume pieces they all have unique tropes most with similar design choices showing humanoid faces that have been heavily distorted and warped into creepy exaggerated expressions.
I found this useful research for mask styles and the way some masks are designed to look realistic almost if they've been made with flesh and how others are similar to masks you'd buy on halloween almost giving a real life horror aspect that anyone could become a killer behind a mask

Finalising my physical piece
Im in the final stages of finishing my Japanese Oni Inspired piece, for these last few stages I have to finish the paint cleaning up any areas that aren't to the best of my ability as well as dry brushing and overall adding paint texture to the mask prop, after id completed this I decided to further detail the piece and give it some age as if it was an unearthed artefact / ancient tribal mask which id looked at within my research.
after the painting stage swell as the dry brushing stage id decided to add more age and texture to my piece by incorporating make moss using a variety of types mixed together I decided upon dark red, yellow as well as a muted green id mixed these together throughout the piece putting them on various areas to shoe it'd been in the late stages of being full taken over from moss and greenery soon to be preserved, I decided on these colours to show that the moss might've. been living off of the mask taking up its colour as if it was eating the paint due to it being somewhat natural in composition much like actual masks that'd been painted using natural pigments. for the finishing touches I scraped away at the paint and chipped some sections that would further age the piece and give it more detail and texture I also finished off the eye and any paint id missed, while im not an excellent painter I feel like the rough textured overall somewhat unguided / messy paint allowed for a more authentic piece that shows whoever made it didn't have tools from modern day.

Finished Undercoat / Second Base coat
Id finished the Undercoat that would be part of my detailing and that would overall age my piece I then added my fist layer of red that would be my main colour id tried this previously on my other miniature trials / Oni research.
I started to detail my piece chipping away at the main coat of red swell as adding / texturing it with small layers of yellow giving it age and wear and tear id finally “mossed” it by adding fake moss using various colours two being similar to the red and yellow I was using almost to show the moss is living and eating away at the paint.

Seven
Crime scenes / Police analysis
I decided to look into the Movie “Seven” that is about two detectives that are looking into a series of Grizzly murders, they are hunting down a serial killer that targets individuals who he thinks represent the seven deadly sins these being Pride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wraith & Sloth.
I decided to look into this movie as it incorporates and dives into serial killers habits and doing things based on a sense of moral/divine justice, while this did cover a lot of topics briefly within my project I didn't find it extremely helpful for visuals minus the crime scenes themselves which were puzzles / clues to the next muder.

Criminal Minds
Getting into the Thought process of killers
Concept: The Concept of Criminal Minds is a show that follows a group of criminal profilers who work for the FBI as members of its Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), using behavioral analysis and profiling to investigate crimes and find perpetrators.
One of the biggest themes of “Criminal Minds” is that the show focuses on victims and criminals and not the crimes.

How are masks for Movies Made ?
What are the Differences between the process of making a Mask in Filming compared to Cultural and Traditional Masks ?
How does this affect things such as style / Detail and the overall use of the Mask and wether it can be “reused” ?
What are common Mask Materials across both different industries or areas ?
Masks and Facial Proportions.
Start to look into and consider how a mask fits a face ( eyes nose bridge chin etc), proportion to the face
Where do the eyes go / how does this work if the mask has a distorted or comically stylistic disproportionate face ?
How does it attach to some head / face ? look at things such as straps vs a full headpiece or hoods.
How does think to prop making etc ?

Ash the Evil Dead
Necronomicon - Prop
Overall I feel like it was a good idea to look into props due to the nature of my project being more prop based than a model.
Necronomicon - book of the dead is a fictional grimoire (Grimoire = “book of spells” / “knowledge of the dead”) this is one of the main props within Ash The Evil Dead in which Ash the main protagonist summons demons and monsters through reading a chapter of the book.
while I found the prop visuals useful on the book I didn't find that the overall story nor the meanings behind it were very useful in my research.

Momento Mori
Concept: Memento mori is an artistic or symbolic reminder of the inevitability of death. The concept has its roots in the philosophers of classical antiquity, and appeared in funeral art and architecture of the medieval period. A basic memento mori painting would be a portrait with a skull but other symbols commonly found are hour glasses or clocks, extinguished or guttering candles, fruit, and flowers.
I feel like this somewhat ties into my project nicely as similarly to how images, items & depictions are made to remind people of death my killer leaves behind miniature Netsuke like Oni (Japanese demon) heads / figures that would not only serve as a calling card but as a reminder of what would happen to his victims, this is also shown through the way the killer photographs the victims stalking them before hand aswell as the process / act & then the recently departed for the police to find.

I’d created several miniature mask designs that I’d modelled from Super Skulpy and before I’d paint my large piece I decided it would be a good idea to test paint the smaller versions, testing which colours worked well and represented the look I was trying to achieve.
While initially doing this I’d painted two of my models I feel like painting is one my weaker points as I struggled to get the colours, shades and overall clean look i wanted to achieve while this was partly due to there small size I did find this good practice for picking the colours of my final piece, I’d decided on doing a Redish brown weathered skin colour base that I’d texture with black cracks giving it age aswell as using black or weathered yellowish oranges for things such as horns, teeth etc
I still wish to use these in some capacity to create outcomes for my final piece as they are similar to netsukes/Momento Mori being small sculptures in a series, they also link to the idea of killers having behavioural patterns and having a “calling card”
