I was just reading about kishōtenketsu because Shigeru Miyamoto's Wiki page mentions it. And then I saw someone on Twitter referencing this post. Good to know about classic storytelling patterns!
The significance of plot without conflict
In the West, plot is commonly thought to revolve around conflict: a confrontation between two or more elements, in which one ultimately dominates the other. The standard three- and five-act plot structures–which permeate Western media–have conflict written into their very foundations. A “problem” appears near the end of the first act; and, in the second act, the conflict generated by this problem takes center stage. Conflict is used to create reader involvement even by many post-modern writers, whose work otherwise defies traditional structure.
The necessity of conflict is preached as a kind of dogma by contemporary writers’ workshops and Internet “guides” to writing. A plot without conflict is considered dull; some even go so far as to call it impossible. This has influenced not only fiction, but writing in general–arguably even philosophy. Yet, is there any truth to this belief? Does plot necessarily hinge on conflict? No. Such claims are a product of the West’s insularity. For countless centuries, Chinese and Japanese writers have used a plot structure that does not have conflict “built in”, so to speak. Rather, it relies on exposition and contrast to generate interest. This structure is known as kishōtenketsu.

I can't wait to move back to California - Filipino in PDX
I’ve been living in PDX for about two years now and it is far from the liberal and progressive utopia that they preach.
-Last year a colleague of mine from work had to file a racial discrimination case against the company.  At the time we were the only POC in the admin office, but after the investigation when she left, they ended up hiring four more POC all at one.  I’m assuming it’s to cover up their BS and look more inclusive.
-A week ago my friend and I went to a country bar for dinner and with only one family in the dining area the waitress acted as if we weren’t there.  No greeting, no “I’ll be with you in a sec.” We left after 20 minutes of waiting.  However, in the past we always seemed to get noticed when we’re with white friends.  I wrote a review on yelp about my experience and outright said they were racist.  One white guy replied and said I oozed of racism and poor choices.  I think I just experienced being accused of reverse racism?
PDX and Oregon has wonderful people and I’ve had some great experiences.  But this is a place where I can’t imagine raising a family.  Living in California I never really experienced nor noticed racism, and if I did, it was because I was submersed in so much diversity that it never bothered me.  It wasn’t until I moved to PDX that I felt really uncomfortable being a minority.
As soon as I’m done with school my fiance, who happens to be from here, and myself can’t wait to move to California.  Where the sun makes people happier and white people don’t sit and stare at me like I’m a martian.

New Age / Hippy Microaggressions
So, I moved to the Portland area a few years ago and I’m Eastern Cherokee, Melungeon (tri-racial group), Puerto Rican, German Jewish, Swedish, and Irish. I’m a pretty typically mixed person on the East coast—multiple generations of interracial marriages created my mix of about 50% non-white and 50% white heritage. I was considered mixed on the East coast, but everyone here either swings from treating me as only white to only non-white. This is the only place where my ethnicity has been asked in interviews and I have even been asked if I speak Spanish when it was not necessary for the job. My brother was let go from a job this year after being bullied for not being white enough. He didn’t pursue any recourse because he didn’t think his case would go anywhere. I have fair skin and blue eyes and can honestly say I never experienced racism personally until I moved here. Not that other areas didn’t have racist people, too, but I was never a target.
While I don’t tolerate the overt racism here well, I have a real issue with the microaggressions from the New Age/Hippy/whatever you want to call your spiritual mixed bag community. These groups just completely make up BS about other cultures to justify any feeling or behavior that they have. I’ve heard BS about multiple cultures from East Asian, Indian, Native American, and some African countries. One of my biggest pet peeves is how even people who know I’m Eastern Cherokee and was born on the Navajo Reservation still try to tell me what “the Native Americans” believed. It’s always delivered in the past-tense like we’re some mythological group that ascended to the next level of enlightenment and left remnants for the less enlightened to find their way. We are still alive! We still have cultures! And we’re not endowed with mystical powers and the secrets to the Universe! We’re real people with modern issues trying to maintain our tribal identities while you try to lump us into one big group that exists on some other plane of existence. I’ve heard this garbage from therapists, estheticians, acupuncturists, coworkers, and countless other random people. This wouldn’t bother me that much if the information wasn’t delivered so sanctimoniously and dripping with condescension.
I knew Portland was going to be rainy, but I didn’t expect to be showered with bullshit.

“Sorry, I know I probably shouldn’t touch it...”
Last week I was off for the holidays, but my girl had to go to work on the day after Christmas. She’d forgotten to bring a lunch, and she works downtown where everything is overpriced for the most part. So I decided to spontaneously bring her something and chill with her on her break (so romantic right). Anyway, her building is right next to Peet’s Coffee so we went there.
The table we sat at was in the back right near the bathroom. It’s getting close to the time that she has to get back to work and the place is getting pretty crowded. A line starts to form for the bathroom near our table. So we’re carrying on with our convo and being cute or whatever, having a moment. And this white lady walks up to my girl and just puts her hand in my girl’s hair…she didn’t even say hello first. My girl’s hairstyle is like these really big curls. It’s super cute. The lady just grabs at it and says “Ugh, your hair is so beautiful.” I was legit in shock. Like people really do that? Like grown ass adults? I dealt with it mostly when I was younger and with people I know or at least acquaintances. But never have I seen a complete stranger do it without even saying hi first.
I’m sure my face showed my disgust and shock. And my girl was so nice about it. I expected her to pop off but she said thank you. What trips me out the most is that the lady (probably feeling the tension and our discomfort) says, “Oh I know I probably shouldn’t touch it. I’m sorry it’s so nice.” So if you know then why would you???? I was sooo confused. That made it even worse to me. Like she’s well aware of the implications, but still decided to do it? My girl responds saying, “Yeah people usually just don’t touch it,” in the nicest but also firmest way. We dipped soon after because the lady was still standing there waiting to use the restroom. It was so awkward and weird and I felt like we both didn’t process it until after we left.
Like wow. White folks really out here just groping black people’s hair without acknowledging the person first. The audacity.

Xcode users can free up space on your Mac
Howdy!
Update Oct-19-2015: Updated for Xcode 7.0.1 (original post was for Xcode 5).
First of all, this post is strictly for Xcode users. If you aren’t, there are plenty of pointers on google for cleaning up space on your Mac machine. Here are some directory paths where you can free up hard drive space by deleting subdirectories of it on your Mac.
~/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData
The Derived Data folder here contains all of your project’s intermediate build information, index and debug/release built targets. You will generally delete this data when you observe peculiar behaviour like improper indexing or slowness of Xcode. Deleting all folders(Not derived data folder itself) from derived data will just make all your projects to be recreated when you build again; rebuilding will be bit slower.
Tip: Open `Window > Projects`. Select the desired project and click the Delete button next to the Derived Data path.
~/Library/Developer/Xcode/Archives
All your targets are kept in archived form in Archives folder. Before you decide to delete contents of this folder, here is a warning - if you want to be able to debug deployed versions of your App, you shouldn’t delete the archives.
~/Library/Developer/Xcode/iOS DeviceSupport
iOS Device Support folder creates a subfolder with the device version as identifier when you attach the device. Most of the time it’s just old stuff. Keep the latest version and rest of them can be deleted (if you don’t have an app that runs on 5.1.1, there’s no reason to keep the 5.1.1 directory/directories). If you still have a device running a particular version, the directory will be recreated by Xcode when you attach the device. And, no, this has nothing to do with simulator.
Caution: You’ll want to be careful when removing files from inside `/Library` and `/Users/<yourusername>/Library` as deleting the wrong files can cause applications, and even the OS, to misbehave.
Tumblr media
     ~/Library/Developer/CoreSimulator
Core Simulator folder is familiar for many Xcode users. It’s simulator’s territory; thats where it stores app data. It’s obvious that you can toss the older version simulator folder/folders if you no longer support your apps for those versions. And, it’s safer to use ‘Reset content and Settings’ option from menu to delete all of your app data in a Simulator.
Tip: [[[NSFileManager defaultManager] URLsForDirectory:NSDocumentDirectory inDomains:NSUserDomainMask] lastObject]; will print the full path to document directory folder.
Note: As we know, simulator location was moved from ~/Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator since the Xcode 6. So, if you have not cleared out this directory, have a check.
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.dt.Xcode
Caches are always safe to delete since they will be recreated as necessary. This isn’t a directory, it’s a file of kind Xcode Project. Delete away!
~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
Additionally, Apple iOS device automatically syncs specific files and settings to your Mac every time they are connected to your Mac machine. To be on safer side, it’s wise to use Devices pane of iTunes preferences to delete older backups; you should be retaining your most recent back-ups off course.
Sigh! I hope you’ve brought a smile on your face after seeing the difference in free space on your Mac machine. I’d happy to know if you have some tip to add to the mix.
Clean ‘em up, yo!!

Publix censors graduation cake to remove the cum from "Summa Cum Laude"
Tumblr media
Cara Koscinksi ordered a graduation cake from the John’s Island Publix, requesting the phrase “Congrats Jacob! Summa Cum Laude Class of 2018”. Publix ruined the order by removing “cum”, because “cum” is “profane.”
